The consensus is that the 1800 and 2000 run games way better than the 1900 does.

dadfatha: "Which runs games better" depends on which resolution.

The 1900fp certainly can't compete with the 2000fp in full 1600 x 1200 glory mode.

I can't speak to ghosting on the 1900, but can on the 2000: It's just not there.

Got this from DealMAC:

Dell flat-panels plummet, 20in LCD now $759 shipped 9:43 am
Dell slashed its price on the Dell UltraSharp 2000FP 20-inch LCD monitor to $999. That's a $400 cut. Dell Small Business takes an additional 20% off for a net price of $799.20. Apply coupon code "###########" for an additional 5% off, making the total $759.24, the best we've ever seen for any 20-inch LCD display. However, sales tax is added where applicable. The same promotions (20% off plus 5% off) yields new price lows on these displays too: the Dell E151FP 15-inch LCD for $250.04; Dell UltraSharp 1504FP 15-inch LCD for $303.24; Dell UltraSharp 1702FP 17-inch LCD for $493.24; Dell UltraSharp 1800FP 18-inch LCD for $516.04; and Dell UltraSharp 1900FP 19-inch LCD for $607.24. All ship free. Offers end today.

This is a great deal, but I need some advice. I currently run a Matrox G400 Dualhead setup with two not very high quality 19" CRT monitors running at 1024X768. If I go higher in resolution my eyes (46year old eyes) suffer. I notice that the 17 and 19 inch Dell LCD's run at 1280X1024. And the 20 incher runs at 1600X1200.

1. Is it true that if I don't run them at native resolution the quality will suck? Can one run the 1600X1200 at 800X600 and get very clear text?

2. Isn't 1600X1200 too high to get decent size text and icons? I run two monitors so that I have lot's of real estate that I can see clearly. That's more important than how much I can cram onto the screen.

3. Can I run one LCD and one CRT monitor? (I don't have the $$ to spring for 2 of these big LCD's). And can one be analog and one DVI?

4. What cards offer dualhead and DVI/analog?

5. If I prefer the lower resolutions would I be better off with the 18 or 19 inch monitors? Which one is the best?

6. Would I be better off just waiting and looking for a great deal on two 17inch lcd's and using them dualhead? I figure that I could probably snag two for about $800. For instance, the Dell E171FP is about $400 each. Is this a good LCD? Will I miss having DVI?

Thanks for the input. This is a great deal, but I also want to be happy with my purchase.

PS I don't play game, just do internet, wordprocessing, and some video viewing.

I say go check out an Apple Cinema Display and see how well your eyes adjust to that screen. It is sort of the same. LCD screens are easier on the eyes. I find that it is easier for my eyes to stare at my 15" 1440x1024 LCD laptop screen than my 21" desktop monitor at 1280x960, or at 1600x1200.

1)Suck is relative. I wouldn't run my desktop at anything lower than its native resolution but for gaming, I don't mind it so much.

2)You can adjust how your fonts are displayed. I simply run it with Cleartype. Looks good to me.

3)Yes

4)Geforce 4 Ti cards offers one DVI and one VGA port on them. Gainward makes a dual DVI Geforce 4 Ti video card which you can convert to analog. Good if you can only afford a single CRT and single DVI at the moment but are considering going dual DVI in the future.

5)I would suggest going with the 19" monitor if you plan on going with lower resolutions.

6)At 1280x1024, you can really tell a difference between analog and digital. I say make sure to get a Digital Flat Panel monitor that has DVI on it to get the best clarity.

Well I bit on this last night. Couldn't help myself. I'm using an IBM 21" Trinitron CRT now but we use Dell LCDs at work and I've been lusting over them for quite some time . However, I am dead-set on using 1600x1200 resolution. I'm used to it and use it at work so I wasn't going to drop $$ on a panel if it didn't do that resolution. I've had my eye on the 2000FP for a while now but in past moments of weakness I'd always tell myself that as soon as I could get it for under $1000 I would. That day was yesterday

I figure I can get about $250-$300 for this 21" CRT on ebay so my net cost is only $500 <gulp!> Hope I get a good Christmas bonus this year!

l2c

P.S. Ross--reminds me of Christmas 2000 with the MSN rewards... that year I picked up a Sony Wega from 800.com, an Inspiron 8000 from Dell, and a ReplayTV 3030 from Mercata. Those were the days!

Don't forget that you CAN run in 800x600 in games and shouldn't take a performance hit. I believe that's the way it works since it would just effectively utilize half the pixels. I don't think I would be able to run much more than that on my Geforce4 MX anyways so this isn't really a problem yet

Rossman,
For someone who is undecided, you seem to be posting here alot

I hope they have enough of these units to meet demand. Hopefully it will arrive by Christmas time.

MercenaryForHire - Most Dell deals expire at 11:00 PM CST so this will probably expire tonight at 11:00 PM CST.

luv2chill - *wipes a tear away* Ah yes the good 'ole days, I loved the MSN Passport 20% off, VA.com, Reel.com, BigStar.com, Buy.com coupons, CDNow.com, Accompany.com/MobShop.com, the infamous $100 Computers4Sure.com "Bunny", DVD's mispriced at $0 @ Amazon.com, the list goes on and on and on so do my cc statements.

I need to check out a 20" LCD running at 1600x1200, would BB B&M have one on display?

Really, unlike the other Dell branded monitors, they're not made by Samsung?...

Count me as one of the people that has been checking this thread. CHOICES CHOICES! 1600SW or 2000FP! I'm so broke! What I'm wondering is if I can still sell the monitor without losing any $$$ if I decide I don't like it.

And they might make you lose relationships as well. I have never personally understood why the word lose is so often misspelled but everyone does it so no harm done.

I am going to bite and sink my teeth into this deal (2000FP). I am freaked out by such a large investment on this monitor but Monty and others have been such staunch advocates for it that I really cannot say no to such an amazing deal. Needless to say, Monty, I have a very picky eye for monitors and do a lot of graphic design on my current Viewsonic P815-3 (a sweet 21" CRT).

Hopefully, I will be able to color correct this beast with a Spyder and I won't be in pain regarding the lack of true black that LCD monitors always seem to share.

Can anyone provide a direct link to the 2000FP's limited warranty?

Here's a link to the 1900FP's 3 yr warranty but I can't find it for the 2000FP.

If the 2000FP doesn't have a 3 year warranty, there's no way I'm going to buy it.

If nothing else you can always return it & not lose any $$$.

If I end up deciding to ditch it I'll try to sell it locally, if that fails I'll return it.

The 2000FP does have a 3 year warranty... One of the reasons why I'm considering it... Sell my 1600SW (no warranty) for a 2000FP w/3yr.
