Sorry but not a deal unless you already have a receipt from OM. Trying to pass off copies of others is just wrong.

Even if you do have the original receipt (Like I do) - the deal doesn't always work.

I went into staples hoping to get the above deal but after a discussion among the workers + the manager, they concluded that they are only able to do a "price guarantee". On top of that, the price after rebate was to be matched with that of OM... which means I would have ot pay 104.99 out the door and wait for the $25 rebate.. I passed.

That's why its a big YMMV.. i just opened the one i got from Staples today and it turned out to be an 851s

I will have an extra if anyone in CA wants it. I'm going to try to do the Staples pricematch tomorrow and so will have one extra. OMAX also has changed their tune recently - they subbed in the Fuji +Rs for $9.99 out the door! I complemented them hugely (deservedly so) and told them the made a camper happy. The guy behind me did the exact same deal. I told him don't even think about it - just break out your credit card and go nuts....

I have compiled a listing of serial numbers/drive types posted here and on FatWallet. From what data has been posted, there does appear to be a pattern with the exception of the serial numbers for the black-bezel Lite-On. The 851S drives all have "51" or "52" as the fifth/sixth digits. The 811S have "45", "46" or "48" as the fifth/sixth digits. The 811S black-bezel have all been reported as starting with 43035100xxxx (the 851S with "51" are 431351xxxxxx or 481351xxxxxx). If you have a Lite-On DVD drive listed below with an incomplete serial number (ie. less than the first 7-8 digits), post the serial number and I'll update the list below.

Also include whether your drive has "8x DVDRW Dual Format IDE Kit" or "DVD Internal 8X Dual Rtl" listed above the serial number on the retail box, as this also appears to be a way of distinguishing which drive is which....

Worked for me:

Bought PD (liteon 851s) at Office Max for 79.95.

Took receipt to Staples...bought another PD (lite-on 811s) PM'd to 80 with 25 rebate......total price $65. (sweeeeeeeeeeeeet!!)

Now the big question...which one do I put in my system..... 851s or 811s. I already did a succefull backup with an Imation DVD-R using the 851s.

I'll put the other in my brother's system.

Any suggestion?

My local staples (MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA) had one in stock but it was a btc drive so I skipped. Instead, I went to my local frys (FREMONT, CA) and I saw that they had this drive. After much haggling with the manager I ended up getting this drive for 100 out the door - 20 MIR = 80. Eh, not bad

i got mine from staples, the guy REALLY didnt want to do it, cause apparently thats way below their cost. I mentioned that the policy didnt allow them to pick and chose (in a nice way) and the guy gave in, i felt bad for the guy but hey, if i can get this drive for $55 ..... he tried to hide the rebate form so i just asked for it. he didnt give me the 110% just matched it, but i felt bad, and figured i wouldnt screw them out of $8. so in the end I finally got my Lite-on. guess its time to return the magic spin, and the BTC huh?
this drive is running nicely in my firewire/usb2.0 enclosure for the notebook. and its sooooo tiny smallest CD/DVD drive ive ever had (unlike that mammoth of a 2x CD-RW i got in 98)
