They use the computer for alot of scanning and selling on ebay (ebay powerseller's). If I were to purchase this computer I would definitely be putting at least an additional 256 stick of ram. The only thing that bothers me about the computer is that it is a Celeron of which the ones I dealt with in the past for my own uses were junk (back in the under 1.0ghz days). Will this computer show a significant increase in power for them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If (you or) your parents can live without the Dell 1800FP LCD, I would wait for another $400-$500 deal on the Dimension 4550.

Also remember the 2350 has no AGP. While they may not be gamers, it limits their future expansion options.

If price is very important to them, then buy this, otherwise hold out for a 4550.

They say its slow? geez. what OS are you running? For what they are doing, that is plenty fast enough. Get more ram, that may help. or a faster hdd. This celery will be a little faster, not enough to notice much. if you want a quick boost, reinstall the OS.

you notice how prices of LCDs are dropping so fast? Wait another few months, and you can get this 18" for $300 or less easily.

AFAIK, CompUSA is the only one currently selling the 9100 PCI's. That's where I got mine. They just started shipping these cards less than 2 weeks ago, so they probably haven't hit all the retailers yet that are planning on selling them. Btw, the CompUSA website still doesn't list this card, so you have to call the individual stores to find out if they have them in stock. I think Visiontek said they would also be shipping this card to Fry's. You might check there as well.

They are running windows 98, I would think it would be fast enough to but, when I go home I can notice significant slowdowns.
When I was home yesterday, I told him that he should just let me just format it and reinstall the OS and it would run a lot faster but, he is scared to let me do that while he has things on ebay (he is knows very little about computers) He thinks it might some how delete his ebay auctions, I tried to convince him of otherwise but, no go. I try to get him to understand but, my dad is 55 years old and knows very little about computers and is having a hard time learning. Sometimes I have to drive 2.5 hours both ways just to do some simple things on the computer for him because he can't understand what I'm talking about when I try to explain them on the phone. I don't really mind so much because their my parents and I love them but, sometimes it can be exhausting.

A nice as I can say it Windows 98 stinks. XP is much more stable. But if they currently use a scanner or camera make sure they are compatibible with XP first before buying this machine....especially the scanner.

I'm going to have to probably wait until summertime anyway to get them something new because they will freak out even over the minute differences between XP and 98. I love xp (after it was finally updated a bunch).

Hi -

Quick question - seriously considering this deal. I've been looking into the 18" Dell for a while, and this deal seems excellent. Is it just me, or is this too hard to pass up? I noticed people said this monitor is digital. First of all, does this mean that I cannot use this with my current VGA output that I use for my CRT? I have an old GeForce2 Pro. Also, does the computer actually have a digital output?? I wouldn't imagine dell would sell these together if it didn't.

Thanks,
Ben

I believe the 2350 is based on the 845G chipset. IIRC, the integrated video only has one VGA-out.

So you are saying this monitor will not work with regular VGA? If so, why would dell sell this PC as a package.. and the monitor with the computer if they didn't work together?

the monitor has both ports. you can also get a converter from DVI to VGA.

Anybody ever tried upgrading the mobo in one of these? Do they use some sort of mini-ATX?

Why not just sell the whole system on eBay?

Or I was considering slapping another NIC into mine and making it a router/BSD box to play around with.

I wouldn't count on that. I've heard that a lot of the drop in LCDs has to do with the massive drop off in business demand, who are normally the major consumers for LCDs at work and for laptops. If the economy picks up again and they start buying again-which they'll have to do eventually-prices could jump up again.

Does anyone know if I can switch the processor in this for a P4 later on or am I stuck with the celeron? Right now I think that would make or break the deal for me. Not a big fan of celerons, but if I can stick a better processor on or if I find a good sale at Newegg, this would be worth it.
