I browsed the internet and found this site had interests in the same product my relatives found at dell.
It turns out they won't honor both rebates. Thats too bad because friends and family of mine purchased the item.
Heres the chat, I'll upload the 200+ rebate pic on the dell site.

I tried to be polite and get the full round picture on the policy on the website.

This information should not be sent to anything outside of AnandTech, Don't Print out and send to any company's i.e. (Dell, WD). Thanks.

Welcome to Dell Chat. Please wait for an available agent. You will be notified when your chat is accepted by an agent.
{Me 12:09:43 PM} Yes, the agent "Sean" in the Promotion/Rebate Question area accidently closed the Chat menu, I was speaking with him about a rebate listed on the dell.com site. May I have his Reference # or could you direct me to him.
The session has been accepted.

{DELL 12:09:52 PM} Thank you for contacting Dell Consumer Customer Care Chat. Please allow me a moment to review your question
{Me 12:10:38 PM} No problem. Thanks.
{DELL 12:11:32 PM} Okay , i apologize to say that i cannot do that. How ever i would be glad to take your question.
{Me 12:12:23 PM} One moment please...
{Me 12:14:14 PM} Well the thing is, I had just finished asking him the question and that took a total time of about 20 minutes.
{DELL 12:15:30 PM} Yes i understand and apologize for that but there is no way i can transfer you chat.
{Me12:15:33 PM} It would really save alot of time. I can repeat, no problem here, just that it would be wasting your time on going over an issue discussed.
{Me 12:17:40 PM} Ok, Dell Part # : A0080840 | Manufacturer Part #: WD2000JBRTL Says on your website : 222.26 [You Save $24.69] + Up to $200.00 in main in rebates : is this true? So we can submit a 100$ WD rebate and your 100$ Dell Rebate?
{DELL 12:19:02 PM} Okay i understand your question, but i apologize to say that we were just informed that there is a misprint at the site. so basically there is only 1 rebate for $100
{Me 12:21:03 PM} Sorry the same connection issue is comming up.
{Me 12:21:25 PM} Is it normal for the "We are facing temporary connectivity problems" to come up?
{DELL 12:22:23 PM} Yes, i guess but i am receiving your messages.
{Me12:23:03 PM} Great, I just didn't want to lose connection.
{DELL 12:23:55 PM} I hope i answered you question.
{Me 12:24:05 PM} One second, sorry.
{Me 12:24:28 PM} Well thats odd, the www.dell.com website with the offer has now been changed.
{DELL 12:24:59 PM} Yes , i told you that it was a misprint.
{DELL 12:26:13 PM} Is there anything else i can assist you with?
{Me 12:26:38 PM} Well ------, I've actualy have a couple of family that have already ordered the product with the rebate in mind. I actualy have a screenshot of the Repate that says "+Up to $200.00 in mail in rebates".
{DELL 12:28:08 PM} Yes that's true,we have received a couple of queries regarding this issue.
{Me 12:29:29 PM} Will the rebate be valid for those who have ordered it and have proof that at the time of purchase, they were offered this deal on the dell.com website?
{DELL 12:30:24 PM} I am not very sure about that, you will have to contact the Western Digital for that purposes.
{Me 12:33:54 PM} ------, It was listed on the www.dell.com website; my family bought the product offered because of the Dell promotion. Wouldnt that be false advertising? The rebate was also hosted on the site for a couple of weeks.
{Me 12:35:00 PM} My family is a loyal buyer of dell, including a XPS system; we have recommended Dell products and pc's to extended family as well.
{DELL 12:35:40 PM} I understand that but i cannot assist you directly on this issue . You need to contact the Western Digital for that purpose.
{Me 12:38:43 PM} -----, Could you save me the time and trouble of going in circles (Something Dell never does) and give me a answer after talking with possibly your sales representitives, and possibly your Western Digital partner.
{DELL 12:39:53 PM} I am sorry i am not authorized to do so, b ut i am sure there must be a solution to this as there have been many customers with this proble.
{DELL 12:40:02 PM} *Problem
{Me 12:41:42 PM} What is the most likely outcome of this situation, because of the Dell website having 200+ rebate for several weeks; sorry -------, It just seems a little unfair to my relatives. They believed in your rebates.
{DELL 12:45:07 PM} One thing you can do is Contact the manufacturer and ask them to cancel the order.
{Me 12:45:49 PM} As for the other possiblility?
{DELL 12:48:33 PM} You may contact Sales.
{Me 12:49:39 PM} What kind of information/advice could I receive from Sales, and could you possibly inform them of the current situation. Thanks -----.
{Me 12:50:32 PM} Could you possibly point me to the site were they sell the Dell Part # : A0080840 | Manufacturer Part #: WD2000JBRTL so that I may at least purchase the item for myself? Is the 100$ rebate still valid? Or is that a misprint.
{DELL 12:51:26 PM} I am not sure of the site but you may call Sales at 1-800-915-3355 extension 43784.
{Me 12:53:16 PM} I'm having trouble finding the site, Dell Part # : A0080840 | Manufacturer Part #: WD2000JBRTL is there anyway I can purchase the product from Dell.com for the price you say it's for. Earlier you said that it only qualified for a 100$ rebate, correct?
{Me 12:59:10 PM} Thanks for your time ------.
{DELL 1:00:20 PM} Thank you for visiting Dell Consumer Customer Care online chat and allowing me the opportunity to assist you. Please feel free to visit us again at www.dellcustomercare.com.
{Me 1:00:26 PM} Wait.
{Me 1:00:46 PM} I was hoping you could provide me with the information I asked.
{DELL 1:02:30 PM} Ok.
{DELL 1:03:04 PM} Pricing information is beyond my area of expertise and anyway Sales has access to additional tools to locate parts and configuration details.
{Me 1:08:00 PM} I can see how this issue is going to lead me in circles from Sales -> Western Digital -> Dell (Becase of the + Up to $200.00 in mail-in rebates). I would just like a straight answer on the following, please.
{Me 1:08:46 PM} 1. Will my relatives be chared a restocking fee if they return the product they have received?
{DELL 1:09:10 PM} If you return within 30 in the original box, there will be no restocking fee.
{Me 1:09:47 PM} 2. How can a "Mistype" be on the leading PC manufactorer's website (Selling Point) be on for several weeks.
{DELL 1:11:01 PM} I apologize for that. We have now taken care of it.
{Me 1:12:46 PM} 3. In your personal opinion, do you believe that it's fair that the Corp. you work for can change policies on items rebates once you have purchased them. Do you believe this is false advertising? I enjoy Dell products and this just seems as a bit of a put down for my extended family and friends.
{DELL 1:14:09 PM} Well, web site errors can happen sometimes. We understand the inconvenience. It is, of course, never our intention to do so.
{DELL 1:16:26 PM} Is there anything else I can do for you?
{Me 1:16:34 PM} I really don't know what to tell my friends and family.
{DELL 1:16:45 PM} I am sorry.
{Me 1:19:20 PM} "Dell had an error and you have to return everything you received?" It's just hard on us and our friends. Dont be sorry -----, your not responsible for what happened, I appreciate your quick responses.
{Me 1:21:51 PM} I bet Dell has received lots of comments about this from the LA/Santa Barbara area, our friends sure did hop right into buying the product because of the rebate.
{Me 1:22:04 PM} It's kind of funny now that I think about it.
{DELL 1:24:40 PM} Yes that's right, i am sure there must be a solution to this.
{Me 1:27:31 PM} I hope so, well.
{Me 1:28:07 PM} Could you tell me if the Dell Part #: A0158102 | Dell Manufacturer #: WD2500JBRTL 100$ mail in rebate is valid? I'd really like to order a HDD within the next few days.
{DELL 1:35:10 PM} Please contact the manufacturer ,regarding this issue.
{Me 1:37:19 PM} I'm sorry, but are any of the rebates on the Dell.com Corporate Website Available? This all seems very - very, misleading to a consumer who believes he/she will receive a good deal. Will I need to ask the manufacturer for every rebate? This seems a little unprofessional.
{DELL 1:41:47 PM} Dell offers only full system rebates, rebates offered through a Dell software and accessories department is honored by the Original Equipment Manufacturer. In thi
s case being Western Digital.
{DELL 1:42:26 PM} This is the reason why I have suggested you to contact Western. They will be able to assist you with this query.
{DELL 1:44:12 PM} I can give you the contact numbers in case you would like to contact them
{Me 1:44:22 PM} Could you please.
{DELL 1:45:36 PM} The numbers are:
(800) 275-4932
(888) 932-7274
{DELL 1:45:47 PM} Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
{Me 1:46:08 PM} As a suggestion, your website should carry that explanation you gave me about rebates. The consumer would then be more aware and skeptical of certain prices.
{DELL 1:48:16 PM} Thank you for the suggestion. All feedback whether positive or negative helps us in realizing the true needs of our esteemed customer. I will forward your suggestion to our webmaster.
{DELL 1:48:19 PM} Thank you for visiting Dell Consumer Customer Care online chat and allowing me the opportunity to assist you. Please feel free to visit us again at www.dellcustomercare.com.
{Me 1:48:29 PM} One second
{DELL 1:48:36 PM} sure
{Me 1:48:50 PM} Those numbers are for the sales department of Western Digital?
{Me1:49:59 PM} And, the rebates on the PC's by dells and there peripherals are valid, correct?
{DELL 1:50:02 PM} Those are the only numbers available to us, if you can give me a moment, I will try and check whether this is the sales number
{Me 1:50:11 PM} Thanks.
{DELL 1:53:05 PM} I am unable to verify whether this is the number for sales, but I have another number for them which is for the corporate head office of Western Digital
{DELL 1:53:21 PM} The number is 949-672-7000
{DELL 1:53:41 PM} You will be able to find out the location of the sales team as well as the numbers from here.
{Me 1:55:42 PM} Can I get your reference number please.
{DELL 1:56:35 PM} My badge ID is ----- and the session ID for this interaction with you is ---------
{DELL 1:56:57 PM} Is there anything else I can do for you today?
{Me 1:57:41 PM} Can a copy of the chat be mailed to me, please.
{DELL 1:57:46 PM} Sure
{DELL 1:58:12 PM} As soon as you click on the end chat option, it will ask you whether you want a copy of the transcript to be emailed to you
{DELL 1:58:35 PM} Please click on yes, and it will be emailed to the ID you had provided while filling out the chat request form

So basically Dell is disclaiming responsibillity...the question is whether they are liable for purchases placed during the time that the rebates were being offered on the site.

I believe they are, Dell sells a majority of there PC's on the internet. They should not have errors like that on the website for a week +.

It seems they are very confused, as DELL would not verify any of the other rebates; this is very misleading to a consumer.

- For those frustrated on what to do, here is some information if you seek Legal Action on "False Advertising" -

http://pub117.ezboard.com/flawnotesfrm7
http://www.lawpublish.com/s4.html

What Makes an Advertisement "False"?

Under federal law (state law may vary), false advertising is often divided into two categories:

1. advertising that is literally false, and

2. advertising that is literally true, but that is proved to be likely to mislead or confuse consumers.

For advertising in category # 2, judges normally do not rely on their own intuitive reactions as to what is likely to mislead or confuse consumers. Instead, they usually want to see objective evidence, often in the form of consumer surveys.

Shiet! In Los Angeles county, if they shortchange you by a penny or the cash register comes up with a different price from the ad price even by a penny, the law requires that they post a sign on their window that shows regarding their conduct or something like that. As for Dell, it should be required to post a sign on their website like "Buyers beware, our prices and terms are subject to change even after you place the order!"

OT: Yup, here in the South Bay the Target stores have been under scrutiny for not having the right prices on advertised sale items. If I recall, the fines were in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, with the possibility of store closures if it continued. For a massive retailer like Target, closures for a couple of days should be enough to get their act together. And then there's Von's grocery stores and their erroneous scales. It was good to hear that our DA and department of weights and measures were doing their job.

From my understanding this is the bare drive not retail kit so it's not qualified for any rebate.

I agree, all thats listed at Dell is the WD2000JB which is the bare drive, not the WD2000JBRTL hard drive kit.

I dont see Dell honoring either Rebate for the drive currently listed.

This seems dead to me.

here's the thing. IF DELL really feels that they can get away with denying responsibility, why pull the product off?? why not just take off the rebate link?

i think they know they will pay a piece of this, hence they took it off.

Yep. I hate to be the one to say I told you so...:-(. But I told you so.

As for liability - I am sure Dell will gladly refund your money - the extent of their liability and your damage.

I ordered my drive last night along with a Radeon 9600 pro. Total shipped was 368.00 After the 10 percent off and a $25 coupon, and hopefully I get both items for 168 AR. The Radeon shipped today although the website stated that it would ship in 5-7 days. The hard drive has not shipped yet, although it said it would ship same day. I made the order around 9:30 pm CST Thursday Night.

Anyone have their hard drive ship out yet, and if you did what day and time did you place your order?

Good Luck to everyone who got in on this deal.

It's the marked ship date for the hard drive and the representative I talked to said that my order is still being processed. So I'm about to talk to the shipping department and see what the hell is going on. This is frustrating, we have until Oct. 27th to send our rebate forms in but this is ridiculous.

Apparently they can't guarantee any ship dates and therefore can postpone at will. It's frustrating because I made all my computer orders the same day and everything else has already come in for my new comp, except this damn hard drive and it hasn't even been sent yet. I'll supposedly get an email notification within 24 hours telling me exactly when the order will be shipped, I'll report back then.

My wife ordered one for herself and it came today. It says estimated ship date is today and it's here already. I also cancelled the order on Sept. 27 and it still ships. This is ridiculous. I did not expect it to come today and I opened the packing box. The rebate center insist on both rebates being valid but WD has confirmed that only one is valid. So gotta to return it.

update direct from dell

What I don't understand if some shipped, and if we wish to contiune with the order after they contact us. What would stop us from sending in both rebates anyway? How would Western Digital know which ones shipped already? For this deal is dell sending order details to WD? I ordered it early the 26th before most of the threads got big, and dell's site still stated both rebates for a savings of $200. I wonder if a call to dell would be worth it?

Because your purchase date would be changed when the order is re-instated. Therefore you would not qualify for one of the 2 rebates.

You better hope that your drive ships before Dell can put a hold on it.
