I was just at Staples this morning, I'm amazed at how netbooks are injecting themselves to regular consumers now! They had the HP Mini and an Acer Aspire model, both 8" or 10".

Very nice price on a nice little netbook

If only they had the Atom 330 and the ability to add a standard 2.5" or 1.8" drive.

"If only" can be applied to anything really. Always that carrot dangling up ahead to force us into a buy now or wait dilemma! Its a good price for anyone wanting a netbook and can have OSX or Windows installed. Very versatile for it being so simple.

Dell website appears to be getting hammered. I have yet to be able to view my cart, only "Page cannot be displayed."

Anyone else having similar problems? I want to order this!

I was thinking of getting this as something I can go online with, type word documents, and maybe listen to music/watch movies via a memory stick. I've never owned a laptop before or used Ubuntu... would this thing do what I want? For a mere $200, I'm not expecting anything amazing, but I don't want something that crawls and can't do anything without taking forever.

I would keep the 8GB SSD and the 512 MB. If I started adding stuff on and paying $300, I could just buy something else.

Well, actually I wouldn't buy anything at $300. That's kind of the point -- I never wanted to spend more than $200 on a netbook. At $300 with more RAM and more storage, it's basically like any of the other netbooks (i.e. Eee PC, etc.) that I could've already bought and chose not to.

I did it. I bought it. Perhaps an impulse decision. Came to $218 with tax and shipping. I'll see how it performs. I can always get some more RAM when it's on sale and up it myself. I hope I like it. It won't arrive until late April. Boo.

I have the same problem, I can't view my cart in IE. Chrome displays it fine though.

No, it was fine. Try a different browser or something or try a little later. Clear out the cache and try? I use Firefox 3. My cart sat there for a couple hours as I looked for ways to rationalize this unnecessary purchase. But I eventually said 'f--- it' and went through with it.

for all the money you spent on this and still planning to spend, you might have as well gotten a full scale desktop PC. I mean.. hell, if you are even planning to buy a 19 monitor...

Do any of these cheap netbooks come with internal dvd drives by chance? Or does that defeat the whole purpose of a netbook like the poster above...

Maybe someone can explain this to a dumbass like me. Why is it impossible to get something like this, an 8GB SSD netbook, below $199, but this other netbook I've found now has 120 GB HDD and it's only $100 more than that?

My cutoff was $200, which is the only reason I bought the Mini 9. But then I see stuff like this -- an Acer Aspire One for $298 -- and I think maybe I can afford another $100. I probably don't need 120 GB... but when I compare that to the 8GB SSD I'm getting here, the difference seems huge. Can anyone make sense of this for me?

SSD is a more expensive/newer technology. They have no moving parts and are silent. Some are even way faster than conventional HDDs but I doubt the 8GB SSD drive coming in your Dell Mini will be able to say that.

nah the 8gb ssd inside is pata mini pcie STEC made by intel. it has 24mb/sec read and 76mb/sec write

it uses a jmicron controller for the internal sdhc slot, and my 16gb class 6 sdhc does about 11mb/sec read and 25mb/sec write.

bought my mini 9 for $227 on ebay, and paid $24 shipped for the 16gb sdhc

Interesting, thanks Abel. I've heard that the Acer Aspire One, which has the 120GB HDD is a loud machine. I'd like to use my netbook in meetings for taking notes, so that doesn't sound good. I suppose no moving parts means less failures. If it's a newer technology, I'm guessing prices will start to drop in a while. Maybe I could buy a larger SSD for my mini eventually when it gets cheaper and install it myself. I'd ask how easy it is to do that, but that's a whole 'nother thread!
