Ok - Thanks KeyserSoze I do see the $100 rebate in the config.

I would recommend that everyone print-screen this because if you click on rebate details at the top it says it is a $50 rebate for the 400sc and when you print the rebate form it does not mention the dollar amount.

Hey RossMAN, is the rebate limit 5 per customer, address, or both?

Cool - just bought one!

And the final screen still shows a $100 rebate so printing that should be all we need for proof.

good catch!
I was just trying to make an easily readable list of what it was included, as I found the top post to be difficult to parse.

Yeah I made that mistake, so I reordered with the correct speed memory. Already submitted a cancellation request for my first order.

Wow, thanks, I just jumped on this. I had been waiting for something like this to come along, figuring that the 400sc was on the way out. On the previous 2 I bought I had to shell out around $70 for 512mb of 2.5ns RAM, unfortunately the ECC ram it comes with is cas3, but at this price who can complain. Anyone have a recommendation for a decent DVI video card for around $60?

Simply a great deal. Approximately $330 AR (with tax) for a machine of this caliber is a steal.

Many thanks for the E-Value code - have already put four colleagues/family members on this deal today.

Yes, many people use this as their desktop. Check the 400SC faq.

link

It comes with PCI videocard but it has AGP slot so you can add a card of your choice if you want to add gaming card.

Some people are scared off by the conservative 250 watt PS rating. There are many guys running the newest video cards with no problems. Here is what I have in mine.

2.8GHz PentIV,800MHz FSB w/Hyperthreading enabled.
1GB Micron PC3200RAM running dual channel
200GB 7200 Seagate
160GB 7200 Seagate
NEC-2510a Burner
Lite On DVD-ROM
Audigy 2 ZS soundcard
ATI 9700 clocked to Pro speeds w/ an Artic Cooling VGA cooler
Hauppauge TVRUSB2 external tuner.

NO PROBLEMS WITH HEAT OR POWERSUPPLY. The machine runs slightly warmer than stock, but not excessively warm. GP

List all the con's
Cons. Sheesh, very hard. In no specific order:

- Case is slightly larger than midtower. Clamshell design rather than standard removable panels.
- Uses the standard Dell plastic drive rails. Some prefer a railess interface. Some call the case ugly (as mentioned before, I prefer to think of it as simple elegance).
- Slightly unconvential case layout (power supply mounted vertically, rather than horizontally, etc).
- PCI Express is becoming more mainstream, and the board lacks any PCI-E slots. No "bleeding edge" factor in this regard.
- Only a 2.8GHz, 512KB Cache Processor. (very large stretch here)
- Only two 5.25" bays. Some might prefer more.
- Comes standard with ECC ram. Upgrade path would be either continuing with ECC ram (more expensive, of course) or scrapping/selling original ram, and replacing with less expensive non-ECC ram. Additional cost factor.
- Limited bios. If you're a serious overclocker, the 400SC might be found wanting in this department.
- 400SC operational noise is almost too quiet.
- Only six USB ports.
- Have to pay tax on the purchase (oh, wait. Ross doesn't have to pay tax)
- 400SC deals seem to be repeating often (although this rivals most of them, save the 3.2GHz deal ages ago)

All of the above listed are an immense stretch (and rather insignificant) when compared with the features at this price point, but attempting to be honest and list all the possible points against a purchase. Simply a very solid system, and an excellent price.

I simply love the duct cpu cooling Dell uses on 400sc. Very elegant! The system uses single 92mm fan that's temperature controlled to suck the hot air off passively cooled cpu heatsink via a duct. If you ever tried to build your own silentPC or quietPC you know how expensive it can get.

I think biggest con is the mail-in-rebate. I hate mail-in-rebates.

I actually prefer a larger case

How similiar is the 400SC case to the old 4500/4550 clamshell cases? I've seen the 400SC pictures but it would be nice to have some side by side pics.

- PCI Express is becoming more mainstream, and the board lacks any PCI-E slots. No "bleeding edge" factor.

Not important to me.

- Only two 5.25" bays. Some might prefer more.

2 is fine with me.

- Comes standard with ECC ram. Upgrade path would be either continuing with ECC ram (more expensive, of course) or scrapping/selling original ram, and replacing with less expensive non-ECC ram. Additional cost factor.

This is probably the first real "con" which affects me. This comes with 512MB stock I'm sure that would be sufficient for web browsing, light gaming and PVR functionality.

- Limited bios. If you're a serious overclocker, the 400SC might be found wanting in this department.

Nope not an OC'er.

- 400SC operational noise is almost too quiet.

Quiet is good.

- Only six USB ports.

I do wish it had front mounted USB ports but I'll survive.

- Have to pay tax on the purchase (oh, wait. Ross doesn't have to pay tax)

OREGON representin' 0% sales tax

- Searching for more...

Added a few more reasons, but none particular noteworthy. Is very difficult (and I really DID try), as it truly is a great value.

Should you be unable to resist, would be hard to believe you would be anything less than satisfied with this purchase. As I mentioned in a recent PM, it is not often I recommend Dell products, but the 400SC is an extremely well constructed system, and is backed by Dell Small Business (rather than Dell Home), which invariably translates to a much higher quality service in terms of support and warranty issues.

Speaking of Dell SB and Dell Home support.

Are SB calls routed abroad or handled domestically?

Actually, there are front mounted USB ports (this really is one of the oddities of the 400SC); they are, however, covered by the front bezel. Only a minor modification to the front bezel (photograph here) is necessary - either with a nibbler, Dremel, or similar device.

Perhaps someone more intimately familiar might handle this one - I simply have had very little reason to call (mostly pricing issues/reductions, etc). The two to three dozen or so times I have called Small Business (or the 20 or so times they've called me) over the past three years, I've spoken with representatives that certainly sounded very domestic, and extremely professional. Not that Dell Home service representatives aren't professional as well, but there is certainly more respectful tenor and demeanor with Small Business.

As always, however, YMMV.

Must have missed this one at the top of the list. The 4550 and the 400SC case are similar in that they are both the clamshell design, of course. The case of 400SC is much sturdier - both inside, and out. The inner casing is heavy duty steel, and does not flex nearly as much as most of the cheaper Dell cases. The clamshell hinge on the 400SC seems far more solid, and feels less "cheap" than the newer 2400 and 4600 cases I've had experience with - the opening and closing action is very smooth.

Outer casing of the 400SC is metallic (read: not plastic), including the front bezel itself. Molded floppy interface, like many Dell cases. The outer casing surface has a black finished texture, and is quite appealing.

Overall, the 400SC casing is rather solid, and well constructed. Many experience users here within ATHD have commented/remarked how surprised they were by the case itself; especially in conjunction with the noise level.
