GOOD NEWS - DEAL IS STILL ALIVE BUT YOU MUST CALL (800)917-DELL

I finally jumped and got an SC600/PIV2.4 with RAID1 (2x120GB) for $704 incl tax shipped to NJ - $100 MIR = $604

Matthew on extension 58557 was very helpful and promised to apply my quote to other similar systems that are ordered today and possibly tomorrow.

Well no go for me. Either the $100 or 15%, but not both.

They also said that I had to order the raid card with the minimum configuration. Bastards!

That's what I get for waiting..

I believe you've had to buy the RAID card for IDE the whole time; it's SCSI that didn't require you to buy their PERC-3 raid card.

Then what is the Hard Drive configuration option "C1,533Mhz FSB Motherbrd IDE,Ascending Size,When Ordering 1 or 2 Hard Drives " for? Isn't this for the Non-Raid configuration? If so, why would I need the raid controller card?

Anyway just ordered with the stackable 15% off your entire order coupon that I just received tonight.

Did that actually stack? Mine seemed to have replaced the $100 off with $133 off. Another case for a phone call may be...

I just got off the phone with a really pleasant Dell representative. I explained that I had placed the celeron based system in my cart yesterday, but at the time did not have my credit card. I went in to purchase it today and the system had disappeared from my shopping cart. I told him that it seemed that the instant $100 off was not being correctly applied to my purchase and asked if he could do anything to help me. He configured the system for me as I read the configuration to him and applied the instant $100 off and 15% coupon for me. I still get the rebate as I didn't take the upgraded system RAM and my purchase is within the window. This should make a nice little home file/mp3 server and run my antivirus software just fine. I may play with Exchange on here too. Any idea where I can get good memory for a reasonable price for this thing?

My config is

QUICK, im getting ready to order, but i have a question.

I can get the 600SC server, but i noticed you can downgrade the 2.4 to the 1.8 and save some money. Does the 1.8 Celeron use the same slocket and pin configuration?? I mean can i upgrade the CPU later if i want to save some money now?

Good question...I was wondering the same thing...ask the Dell guy on the phone to see what he says and report back...I'm not sure if the celeron and P4 are pin for pin compatible. I"ll be interested in the answer...

Well when you call Dell, it says that it snowed in Austin and their sales force is out for the day.

Their phone lines are closed for the day for Small Business Sales. I've tried 3 times.

I'm just going to order if off the Net.

I got a 2.4GHZ system w/ the 36GB HD and the 73GB HD (SCSI) w/ keyboard - mouse for only $561.56 (BEFORE the MIR, including tax and shipping though). So $461 for a nice 2.4Ghz Server w/ SCSI

Strange...I was able to call this morning just fine...and now I am very curious...will a P4 just fit right into the socket on this system?

FYI, he said the 1.8GHZ chip was able to be switched with a P4. He said he wasn't 100% positive, but he was sending me some tech documents that tells for sure. He's emailing me in a bit. I got my deal though

Dell 600SC
Pentium 4 2.4Ghz
128mb Ram
36GB SCSI Ultra 320
Free 73GB SCSI Ultra 320
Free Mouse/Keyboard
Adaptec Ultra 320 SCSI Card
all the other standard BS.
$541 w/ tax, before $100 MIR.

So $441 for some hella SCSI Lovin!!!

The c1.8 is a castrated PIV (less cache and lower fsb) otherwise it is pin compatible. I would ASSUME that it's the same motherboard - so you should be able to swap out the CPU. If you want to be 100% sure, try to obtain the tech docs from the dell support site.

How did you get that drive config? I tried to do duplicate this and only have the 36Gb drive as the free drive.

I'm wondering if a 2.4gig P4 is worth $85 more than a 1.8gig Celeron ?

In terms of resale value seperate from the server.

Also I'm interested if anyone has noticed any differences between the 600SC configured with the Celeron or the P4 other than the processor ? I noticed the FSB is 533 instead of 400, but I assume it's still the same motherboard ?

Personally I think it's a glitch in the system. But do a 2.4GHZ 600SC. Then do SCSI HD's, choose the 36GB as your first HD. Then the second HD reads as below

"Free 2nd 73GB 10K RPM Ultra 320 SCSI Drive with 1st Hard Drive purchase"

It's not Size specific. I was able to order both without having matching sizes.

I actually ordered over the web. I then called quincy and told him my order and see if he could give me a few bucks more off. He laughed and said he couldnt but he'd help me if i needed anything else. I told him i might order another one and he said to just call him. He was nice. Looked up my order and said i got a killer deal

Any idea where I can get good memory for a reasonable price for this thing?
I downloaded the service manual for the 600SC from Dell and here's what it says about memory:

"A minimum of 128 MB of ECC PC-1600/2100 DDR SDRAM memory or DDR-200/266 SDRAM memory, upgradable to a maximum of 4 GB by installing 128-, 256-, 512-MB, or 1-GB registered memory modules in the four memory module sockets on the system board."

I'm assuming the 400Mhz fsb Celeron uses PC-1600, while the 533Mhz fsb P4 uses PC-2100. Also assuming Dell, in the interest of volume purchasing, is installing PC-2100 in all the 600SC boxes, Celeron and P4. Could be wrong about that, though.

So, I'm planning on ordering some Kingston PC2100 DDR from newegg.com:

$33 + 6 shipping : 128MB DDR PC 2100 ECC Registered - KVR266X72RC25/128
$59 + 6 shipping : 256MB DDR PC 2100 ECC Registered - KVR266X72RC25/256

Or Crucial:

$65 + free shipping: 256MB DDR PC 2100 ECC Registered - CT3272Y265

I'll probably just get a 128MB stick to go with the 128MB mine already has; it's for a store server (my parent's comic book store!) that handles cash register transactions and it's not a heavy load.

Also, if your order some memory from newegg.com you can buy Win2k Pro full version oem (same as retail box but no box) for $145 oem, or XP Home full version oem for $93. Any reason the Pro/Home versions (instead of Server/Pro) wouldn't work on the 600SC?
