That was a 4550, a better constructed system IMO. The 4600 has a smaller case with less expandability (1 less PCI slot, only 5 bays instead of 6 in the 4550).

I think dell may

1. honor 1 system per order
2. cancel all order
3. honor all order (unlikely), but with 3-6 weeks delay.

there is no way they eat up all the loss.

and dan.. I miss the deal.[/quote]

Michael Dell is worth over $20 Billion..... I don't think it would hurt Dell very much.

If a mistake is made, it should be honored. That will teach them not to make mistakes in the future.

With the size of the company, they should have enough QA personnel to validate the prices on their web site.

I did not get in on the deal but I see how many of you spent hours of your time reading, posting, ordering......

How many thousands of dollars were just wasted paying your salaries while you waited for Dell to acknowledge your order(assuming most of you were at work)

I was in on the Altec Lansing Speaker deal on 12/12/2001 but they just cancelled the orders (because they actually did not have the items)

This time, they actually have the parts in stock or can get them.

I hope that you guys who spent the better part of today looking for a deal gets this deal honored.

It would be the deal of the month anyway!

Good Luck!

I placed my order, have not received any e-mails, my order doesn't show up on the order status page, but there's a hold on my credit card for the amount of the order.

We've only had 1 person post who has received an actual cancellation. It's just too early to tell if Dell will cancel all of the orders. I do believe that Dell has the right to protect itself from price mistakes as they state in their terms and conditions. I do not believe Dell is into shady business practices like Spiegel where they offer great deals and then charge your CC for more saying the site price was a mistake.

Bottom line, if Dell honors the price I'll really respect them for sucking up the price mistake. If they cancel my order I will be disappointed, but I won't feel defrauded by Dell in any way.

Here's the exact text from the acknowledgement and confirmation, I'm sure it's on their site before you order, too:

Please note that Dell cannot be responsible for typographical or other errors, and reserves the right to cancel any orders resulting from such errors.

Although dismissing anything you don't like with "[we] cannot be responsible for ... other errors" is a little weak and I wonder how legally binding this statement really is. I'm sure they can afford more lawyers than I can, though.

Edit: And while I agree that I won't exactly feel 'defrauded' by Dell when my order is cancelled, this really has to stop. Companies need to be held accountable for their mistakes -- if not by sending the systems at the offered price, then by something that is actually of value to the end-user (not a $20 coupon). BestBuy is the worst offender on this front, certainly. Frankly if they'd send me the system and not honour the $100 MIR I'd take that as a reasonable settlement (though they'd probably still be losing money on the deal).

aard: I agree with you totally on this. Dell must have people and/or programs that monitor high activities on their websites, how can they let this go thru for several hours without knowing the extreme volume?

I placed two separate orders, the first of which was with the "value" hard drive. I e-mailed Dell to cancel that one and they complied, but nothing so far on the second. I think we may be lucky and end up getting these comps...

Good luck to everybody.

No orders have been cancelled yet! If Dell sent out an email saying it was cancelled more people would be moaning about it. Besides, I would think that they would send out a mass email to everyone that ordered not just one at a time. I'm still hoping to get mine, but won't be mad if it doesn't go through. Personally, I think it will seeing how past deals have gone through. This is not much different than Intel and their retail deal going on.

I could only guess that one deal was supposed to end at 11:59pm last night and another start at 12:00am today (or something similar), and something didn't work out right, either there was a time zone problem, or some scheduled job didn't remove one deal and add another one? Obviously they monitor incoming orders becuase they actually catch these things pretty quickly, unlike other online vendors (was re: BestBuy). I just don't get it. If I screwed up like this, first I'd have to call all the customers to correct the problem as much as I could, and then I'd be cleaning out my desk.

While trying to submit after entering all the details, the site kept crapping out on me. Thought the order din't go through and was bemoaning the death of the best deal of the year.

Just checked my email and LO! Hallelujah got the order acknowledgement! Though there is no hold on my CC. I think I am going to react to this like many of the other folks posted, if I get it (and there is no reason why I shouldn't, Dell did shell out 200 $ for the HDD due to their mistake), then I will go out and celebrate, if I don't, then I don't, not going to hold it against Dell, though I would be disapointed and will send them a strong letter stating the same.

Waiting for the order confirmation/cancellation email now!

I got my first confirmation email showing my purchase.
I got hung up going thru the checkout and kept backtracking and adding items to my cart. Finally I just went to my cart and there were like 7 systems listed, so I dropped some and checked out and all seems ok so far. Hope to get my second confirmation soon and a shipping date. Fingers crossed for me and everyone else!

You're just trying to get something for nothing. What has to stop? Mistakes? They're always going to happen. If a store does it too much that it inconveniences you, quit shopping there. You can't say you didn't think it sounded too cheap, but it was worth a gamble since its costs nothing to try. If dell honors it, great for you and kudos to them because you're probably not going to come back to them again but only go where the next super hot deal is. If they don't, you lost nothing but 5 minutes and have even admitted you don't feel defrauded. It'd be nice to get, but they certainly don't owe it to you, nor can you realistically feel like they do.

imho....

$139 x 10,000 = $1,390,000 (payment from customers to Dell)
Assume Dell's cost is $500/system
$500 x 10,000 = $5,000,000

So, Dell's profit $1,390,000 - $5,000,000 = ($3,610,000)

And you guys expect Dell to say:

"To honor our mistake, we will be honoring this deal. Our customers are always right!"

LOL

One could also say that, if all orders are cancelled, Dell is losing $1,390,000 in sales, thousands of new customers, and a day of work wasted dealing with this mess. It should be interesting to see which path they take...

So, why don't you go buy this new Dell system for $139 (AR) and then sell it to me for $39. Why wouldn't you sell it to me? You'd be losing out on $39?

Well, I do come back to Dell. Part of the reason that this was such a hot deal is that it was Dell hardware. And I will certainly come back to Dell regardless of whether or not this system ships.

It's just irritating to me to see this kind of lack of accountability. When local businesses behave in this manner, they have attorney generals and local news stations breathing down the back of their neck. Dell does it and says "oops" and then does it again. I just don't like the policy of "if we said it on the web, we don't have to stand by it". That's all.

And I don't like having a carrot dangled just out of reach.

If a local store makes this kind of mistake they don't have $500,000 people taking advantage of it.

It's like being angry at a strip club because the dancer won't have sex with you.
