"Sure have. It isn't free, my friend, even filing a claim (in Florida) costs you anywhere from $40 to $80 for a case of $100 up to $2500. If you lose, no doubt Dell would charge you their attorney fees. Seems like shooting yourself in the foot, to me."

My friend does not understand that most states have filing fees that are lower than that, and that even a judgment in favor of the defendant (in this case, DELL) does not require the plaintiff to pay defendant's legal fees...All clear?

I'd love to know the ages of the heavy complainers in this thread.

I'm guessing (hoping?) that particular perspective is driven by a youth related self-centeredness rather than a breakdown in the objective, rational, analytical thought process.

On the other hand, almost half of American voters over the age of 18 did vote for Bush... (lol, lets see if we can make a contentious thread even more volatile!)

Sigh . . .

I saw this deal posted alomost immediately. I told my office mate and I ordered a system for him. He told his friend so I ordered a system for the friend. They both got shipping notices. The friend's PC arrived today.

So I get around to ordering a system for my parents and then Dell figures things out and the system freaks out. I've received three order acknowledgements (NOT "acceptances" as some idiot whiners seem to think . . .) but that's all. Now here's the weird part: my credit card has not been charged but my ebates account was credited.

So: am I going to get the box or not?

And the lesson: order for yourself first. Then tell others.

Does anyone know if the power supply can be upgraded in these machines?

Mine is on the Fed Ex truck for delivery today. I put two orders in and somehow the second order I made an hour after the first one got through. Go figure?

Yeah, you can upgrade the PSU, but it's not necessary. The "250W" PSU is conservatively rated and any other manufactuter would rate it 340W. Look at the label when you receive it. If you really want to change the PSU, the Dimension "microtower" and "small tower" cases (but not the SFF cases) use standard ATX 12V PSUs (Dell switched back to standard PSUs over 2 years ago).

The Dell "250W" PSU is good enough to power:
P4 3.06GHz w/HT
1GB memory
3 hard drives
Radeon 9800
floppy
1 CD-RW and 1 DVD-R/RW
RAID card
Audigy 2
Creative Digital VCR
which fills up a clam-shell case (Dimension 8250/8300/4550/etc) minus 1 PCI slot. That's what I ran on my 4550 and 8250 systems and soon on my new PowerEdge 400SC, which also uses the same 250W PSU. The Dell PSU is quiet and stable, so there's no reason to change it.

At least we all get something out of ebates?

Are you sure? I thought Dell uses a standard size power supply, and plug, BUT they switch the position of a couple of the power wires. This makes their PS and mobo proprietary. I suppose you could use a standard power supply -- if you knew which wires to switch.

Check out this article

Check out this article

That article is way out of date. I've even written to the author with links to Dell's system documentation, and gave him a detailed pinout diagram I made (and a list of which Dimension models use standard PSUs), showing that his article needs to be updated. He never responded or updated the article. He's either lazy or biased, I don't really care. For Dimension models, the P3s/S370 Celerons were the last to have that funky pseudo-ATX connector.

It's pretty funny how that same article gets referenced over and over to "prove" that even now Dell uses that old style PSU. It takes 2 or 3 minutes to look and verify that the pinout for the systems is standard. I didn't start buying Dell systems until a little over a year ago, but all those systems I bought (4550/2350/8250/4600/2400/8300) and their 1 or 2 generation predecessors use standard ATX-12V PSUs. I've verified it myself.

The newer system Dell PSUs I bought (4600/2400/8300) come with an extra power connector, but it is not used in the Dimension systems. It might be used on the server boards -- or it could be a newer, not yet released power standard from Intel. That was similar to the 4550s from last year supporting 3 FSB speeds: 400MHz, 533MHz and 800MHz -- and that was way before Intel announced 800MHz FSB CPUs.

Really, I have a 4550, maybe I should stick my 800fsb 2.4 in there to see how it runs.

Well, add me to the list of lucky people who actually got their 4600. Added a DVD drive and a 9800 (has Samsung RAM). I wonder if they shipped to people with older accounts...I've ordered a lot of things and several PC's from them.

Anyone know if you can put a Celeron in this with no problems? I am going to use it as my HTPC (after removing the processor and video card) and will use the 2.4 in another PC I'm building.

Suppose swarms of Anandtechers, ChubbieWalleters, other deal site members, and even the public made a slew of De!! computer orders and a few hours later cancelled...and suppose all those "almost" customers sent De!! an email stating um,let's suppose this:

Dear De!!,

In reference to my order for a De!! computer that I had placed online, it has come to my attention that pricing on your website was a "bait and switch" tactic. Because of misuse of my patronage and my funds my order is cancelled.

If you have specific questions you can contact yourself at SMB_Online_Resolution@dell.com (Good luck there!)
I apologize for any inconvenience and
> thank you for going to HE!!

Kind regards,

Ok, I know this guy who ordered the same system as me. But he ordered it 1 hour after me. He got his order today. WTF is that? I am getting to call Dell once again and ask them what's going on.

if nothing else a clear and understandable stratergy about which orders could be allowed and which would be cancelled would help ease the obvious anger that some people feel over Dell's handling of this situation.

As described above there seems to have been no clear policy which makes all the more irritating and I could see Dell fall foul of this if a law suit did get off the ground.

but hey what do I care i live in the UK and never get deals or rebates such as i see on here.

Consider me lucky
Got it today...but I still did not believe that it was actualy IT, so I opened the box...to find that it was indeed what I ordered, the DIM 4600, w/ base config for $254.80 - $100 MIR.

I definetly was not one of the first to order...so go figure.
It's my lucky day

That's a thought...I received mine and also have a fairly old account with 20+ large purchases on it. I added the system to my cart at the very beginning, but let it sit there while I hesitated. I didn't actually complete the checkout until people were already posting the site was unavailable. PC in hand and credit card charged the $259.xx price.

I have over 50 orders on my 2 year old account and they didn't ship to me. It seems pretty random, possibly having to do with a salesman who let the order slip through. It's pretty clear that Dell meant to cancel all orders possible, but some slipped though. Congratulations to those who got the systems.

I don't feel too bad anymore about not getting this 4600. I've received a couple of other good new and refurb deals since then.

Same here: Saved mine to my cart and ordered an hour later, after deal was already announced dead. Got mine with 2.8/512/9800 (flashed to PRO) for ~540 inc. tax on West Coast.

It must be who took the order. I had mine in early. I just upgraded to the 9800 and better hard drive. But I didn't get mine. The hold on my credit card was removed today.
The way this has been handled is totally unfair.
Has anyone done any follow up on getting anything done about it?

Companies can be unfair, in that they can generally choose whom they wish to have as customers and clients, as long as they do not break applicable laws (for example, by discriminating on the basis of race). The real issue is whether or not contracts were formed and DELL is liable for breach of contract.
