You were still talking of the 1600SC

Is the 1600sc the better of the 2 deals?

addado,
I'm researching both. The 1600SC is a great deal. The downsides seem to be the noise and the ability to add another processor. I have been searching the web and support.dell.com and people act like the 1600SC is so loud you cannot talk in the room. People are describing the sound as louder than 12 other servers combined. Some people are modding the fans, etc (apparently dell uses non standard fan connectors so you have to splice them in). Then it seems to add another processor you have to order some Dell fan/clip assembly since the stock Xeon doesn't fit. I don't really understand this part, but there seems to be some issue there.
But if noise isn't an issue, $500 for a duallie (1 proc only) is pretty sweet. I see Xeon 2.4s at newegg are like $225. And it has a SCSI controller. It would make a nice server.
All this is just from my searching. I don't have the SC420 nor the 1600SC. I do have the 400SC and it is very quiet. I'm glad someone mentioned noise. I just assumed all Dell server would be silent after my experience with the 400SC.

About to pull the trigger on the SC420, quick question though, does this machine have software RAID on it's southbridge (ala ICH5R or ICH6)? I need RAID 1 for my mail server.

How bout noise? someone asked earlier in thread bout the loudness of the SC420 but didnt see any response.

Is the SC420 as silent as the SC 400?

Few questions about the 420SC:

1. Does it have onboard sound?

2. How many hard drives can be installed?

I don't believe it has onboard sound, but that's a cheap $10 Newegg fix. As far as harddrives,

Drive Bays
[*]2 x 1.0" Non-Hot Swap for hard-drives
[*]1 x 3.5" Floppy
[*]2 x 5.25" for CD-ROM
[*]Optional: DVD/CD-RW or Tape Backup

1600SC

wow the 1600sc is HOT! it comes with a free quadruple upgrade to a gig of memory with a xeon processor for 499! WTF!

Would be hotter if it came with a faster xeon cpu. How old is the 2.4ghz 533mhz now? Upgrade to the 3.06Ghz 533mhz is $199, kinda blows the deal.

FREE UPGRADE to 1G DDR2, 533MHz, 2X512 Single Ranked DIMMs [add $119]

And the price is with a single proc...for the second it is Intel® Xeon? Processor, 2.4GHz, 512K Cache, 533MHz Front Side Bus [add $599 or $16/month1]

LOL

Two questions for the stupid among us...

1.) No problem coming in later and adding a Pentium 4 CPU in, right?
2.) Single Ranked DIMMS? -- Is this the same thing as some kind of standard PC3200 Ram (Kingston Valueram, for instance?)

Thanks...

1. Probably. I don't think theres anything you have to do to get one in there.
2. Not sure. SInce they're giving me 512MB for the price of 256, I doubt I'll upgrade anytime soon.

I think the chipset is a broadcom netxtreme or something so check those out.

Anyone have any experience installing Linux distros on these SC420s?

Trying to find an alternative to my desktop while running a personal server in the background.

If it weren;t for the PCIe and SATA, I would be 100% sure that they would work flawlessly. Either way, I am sure the 2.6 will handle it fine.

Ordered 8 of em. Only 5 at an order are allowed with the $250 discount (per unit) to hit that $259 price point. So 1 order of 5 & another order of 3

Upgrading a clients office, the are all on 1 ghz durons. w/128 SDRAM.

Reasons I jumped on this deal? Many.
1 This PC/server is next generation/newer technology , in other words in 3 to 5 years DDR2/socket-T LGA775/SATA Should be easier to find parts for than ddr/478/Pata

2 Professional looking case\PS (not to mention ease of use, intrusion alert, padlockability).

3 1 year waranty next day service.

4 Value for buck (newegg prices quoted, cheapest item found that matches specs)

Intel Celeron D "325" 2.53 GHz, 533MHz FSB, 256K L2 Cache Processor - Retail $84
Kingston Valueram 240-Pin 256MB DDR2 PC2-4200 - OEM (2x$63.25) $126.50
Hitachi 80GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive, Model HDS722580VLSA80, OEM $63
Intel "BOXD915PCY" 915P Chipset Motherboard For Intel LGA 775 CPU - 111 (DDR2) $111
JAHT 10/100/1000Mbps 32bit PCI Ethernet adapter, Model JN-1110R32C - Retail $11
SONY 52X CD-ROM, Model CDU5212, OEM $13

Comes to $408.50 plus shipping (no tax)

Grabbing a $50 case/PS
a $69 Frys/outpost sempron combo
80 gig SATA $63
512 DDR $65
CD-rom $13
giga NIC $11

Will total $271
Plus gathering it from several vendors piece mealing it together, may not have the same build quality look, nevermind the extra time assembling it (although in personal systems its half the fun).

Good starting off from point, for a basic office machine.

Yup. The machine I bought is replacing my wife's eMachines Celery 366. I didn't feel like going out and spec'ing a new system, ordering parts from different places, piecemealing it together and praying it works right the first time. This way, I just swap out the boxes, install XP (legit btw), copy the data over from her previous machine, and she's good to go in about an hour.
