Since I'm installing Windows SB 2003 Server on it, the drivers were on the disk. Not sure about XP

I got it to work. Extracted the windows 2003 drivers then installed them from update in device manager.

Thanks

Has anyone had any luck throwing an IDE hard drive as a slave to the optical drive?

I installed XP Pro and I'm not seeing my 160GB IDE in Disk Management.

Question 2. Somehow I only received 256MB of RAM. Did anyone save the page that shows a free upgrade option to 512MB? I don't know why I didn't receive this free upgrade and I'd love to have some proof of the promotion to show them.

Any chance anyone can help me? I'm on the phone trying to get them to send the RAM, but I'm doubtful...

Did your order confirmation say you got 2x256 ram or just 1x256. Your order confirmation may be your best bet. Good luck.

Would this mean that the folks using XP also used the Win 2003 motherboard/chipset drivers on the CD / then installed with device manager? Thanks.

Nope, my order confirmation and packing slip all said 1x256.

I called Dell and they took my word for it on the free upgrade. Supposedly they are sending a 512 stick and then I will be returning the 256 stick. I'll believe it when I see it based on my past experience with Dell CS. It was funny, I initially talked to a (overly) polite American who "directed [me] to the proper department," which of course found me in India. Sigh.

I installed XP Home. Just run the driver install executable in Windows 2000 compatibility mode (right click on the .exe, select properties, and it's one of the tabs).

Everyone should keep in mind that there's no onboard sound with this. You'll need to buy a sound card if you want to use this as something different than a server.

As for the memory, I have 512MB and it's two 256 sticks. It's true that you do need to buy a sound card, but the local TigerDirect store here in Raleigh has a SoundBlaster PCI 4.1 POS sound card for $15. Works great for me. I installed XP Pro and didn't have to break out any disks for drivers or anything I don't think. This machine, while not a speed demon, works exteremely well for web browsing, home finance (quicken), and word. My wife loves it. It's a little slow on redrawing stuff on the screen, probably due to the crappy integrated video. You can apparently get an nVidia 5700 PCI video card from Newegg for $90. I may get that and give it to my wife as a "Christmas Present for You but Actually For Me" present....

Just out of curiousity, do you still have the memory for sale? If so, how much are you looking to get for it? I have one 256MB stick and would like to pick up another. Thanks.

Sorry for the newb post, I am interested in the Dell ECC memory that was shipped with the SC420 box. I have 1 stick of 256MB and would like to get another if anyone has one for sale. In the first page, one person posted that they might have a stick for sale. Anyone that does have one, please pm me and let me know what your price is. I have paypal. Thanks.
