Nice... but what is a squeezebox?

It's a wireless music hub that you could pair with something like the Audio Engine A2 powered speakers and have a very musical, small footprint, but still reasonably priced office system.

I bought it for it's very high quality coaxial digital output, even in the context of a much more high end audio system.

My Sqeezebox is the best piece of equipment I have bought for my audio setup in roughly 40 years. You can hook it to an ordinary receiver-powereed speakers are not necessary at all. It hooks up to your receiver and you can broadcast your music to it. I've ripped all my CDs to lossless FLAC files and never touch them again unless it is to loan them out or play in the car.

$180 is a fantastic deal. Logitech's "dented box" deals for other equipment generally involves only slight cosmestic marring to the cardboard.

The only thing that would make me hesitate on this is in a few weeks Logitech is coming out with a Sqeezebox touch, with a touchscreen. Odds are it will be $300+ though.

just to make more sense of this thing for me...

basically it can take streaming across a wire or wifi and has good quality musical parts? so it makes it so the pc doesn't have to be by the speakers or receiver?

better sound than a x-fi into a receiver?

It is supposed to have Burr Brown DACs, but the specific ones are probably at least a couple years old technology (Amazon has it's original availability as September 2007, and presumably mass market dacs get "better" - i. e. cleaner with lower distortion and noise - every year)

From an audiophile perspective, I've read that it is the quality of the coaxial digital output that makes it so desirable.

I would imagine something more recent like an Asus Xonar DX might be better choice if running analog output into an avr, especially if you run Windows 7 (doesn't have XP Kmixer, which arguably might subtly garble signal because of resampling).

Used Logitech Squeezebox Classic seem to sell for $175 - $200 used on Audiogon.com, so they seem to hold their value really well.

Just got off the phone with logitech, and the sales rep said it probably does not have the remote. It is not listed in the specifications. Did anyone get their order yet, and did it have the remote?
EDIT: a few phone calls later they insist it does have the remote.

It would be unworkable without the remote (or its equivalent)-there are no buttons or switches at all on the Squeezebox. Some people use other devices in lieu of the Sqeezebox remote but I can't imagine them selling the Squeezebox without the remote absent a very clear warning/disclosure.

Probably the rep was thinking of the fancier remote that comes with the newer model.

Do either support streaming FLAC, or any lossless audio format? That's the nice thing about the Squeezebox, you can hook it up to a good stereo via the optical out and stream music in very high quality.

Not to mention consoles suck a lot of power and can be loud. Even if they have similar capabilities, the Squeezebox is a much more elegant solution IMO for streaming lossless audio.

I have two squeezebox classics and the squeezebox boom. They are all awesome and worth the money. Love that you don't need your computer on to tune into internet radio.

I bought this purely on the positive posts and the idea of being able to stream my music. Of course now I have to assemble the music collection right!

Other than 2-3 wrinkles on the outside edge of the box that were also on the inside of the cardboard box everything came in, this thing was wrapped tight in that shrinkwrap/sorta saran wrap stuff airtight. The Squeezebox has no scratches or even scuffs, it has the remote, and looks like a brand new unit to me.

Logitech has some cool packing colors and design for this thing, though my Logitech rechargeable MX Revolution mouse came in the absolute coolest packing I have ever gotten a product in. It was a green and black themed box, like something out of Star Wars. I have the empty box on top of a bookcase and visitors always notice the empty box, kinda funny, since the mouse is on the computer desk right next to it, and the photo of the mouse is right on the box, but no one ever notices the mouse,lol! ... just the box it came in!

There is something to be said for good marketing and packing, I remembered the small thrill of opening that mouse up when it came out, and I saw this Logitech post. Really gotta just love Logitech, Harmony remotes, Mice, Trackballs, and these music devices, all cool !!

I am guessing the edge of this box got a bit wet or they were just stacked too tight or something, because other than those small wrinkles in the cardboard it seems perfect and like new merchandise.

I'm in the same boat. I bought the Logitech Duet and now need to get my music collection in order.

Any suggestions out there on what to use. I'm reading that MediaMonkey is a nice program for large collections.

Any other suggestions?

Ripping lossless? I'm kind of partial to Exact Audio Copy, but any other software that supports secure ripping and AccurateRip should work just as well. I've never really done any research on MediaMonkey, so I'm not sure if it has these features or not.

unknown: I used MediaMonkey for a while to organize my library but gave up on it when it kept corrupting the database, never tried it for ripping. I also strongly endorse EAC-it's freeware and probably best of the breed IF it is properly set up. Setting it up properly is not the easiest to do, look up some guides on how to do it and take your time. Google for EAC setup FLAC.

If you want a commercial program that is far more intuitive and simpiler to use, but probably just as good, try Easy CD-DA Extractor (free trial version available) located here:
