Using that anandtech bench comparo thing vs a 6950, this thing sucks down a whopping 129w more in crysis. Wow

I think I'll pass. Great price though for those living in cold places like someone said before.

A friend of mine has a 480 and it is a great performing card. However it definitely runs hot and it can get pretty loud so if that bothers you I wouldn't recommend it. $220 is a steal for that kind of performance, but I'm not going to upgrade from a 6870 to a 480.

It's only going to draw a ton of power while gaming, at idle the differences in power consumption should be much closer. Since most users keep their video cards idle most of the time, the added power draw under load shouldn't be much of a problem. However, my main issue with the 480 is that it can get really loud while gaming and my headphones don't block outside noise.

It's a constant work in progress. Two different builds have been through it since 2008. I would love to have it go another four years!

Received mine from Tiger Direct today, installed and running smoothly. It is a runs a tad warmer than the GTX285 it replaced but I cant tell that it is any louder, so all is good.

Was running BF3 with these settings recommended by Nvidia for the GTX480:

Texture Quality Ultra
Antialiasing Deferred 4x MSAA
Ambient Occlusion HBAO
Terrain Quality Ultra
Mesh Quality Ultra
Shadow Quality Ultra
Effects Quality Ultra
Motion Blur On
Terrain Decoration Ultra
Antialiasing Post High
Anisotropic Filter 16x

It looked amazing and I never saw my frame rate go below 37 using the in game render.drawfps 1 command. Ill dial down a few settings to maximize my frames for getting serious in multiplayer though. I was just running around and dying a lot from gazing at all the new found eye candy tonight.

You were right Termie, the DX11 definitely adds to the visual experience. Thanks for talking me into it.

You're welcome!

By the way, you'll bump those framerates up about 25% by ditching the MSAA. It'll still look good. You should be able to hit about 50fps average on ultra.

Glad I made the switch as well. Got mine on the 5th, stock fan doesn't seem to go above 60% at 100% gpu usage so noise is a *LOT* better than expected. Hopefully it doesn't get to obnoxious in the summer but that's nothing a modified fan profile shouldn't take care of. Overclocks to 835mhz at stock voltage (up from 700) and performs a whole hell of a lot better in BF3 than a single GTX 460, the extra memory really did the trick.

The extra 512 MB of memory seems to have solved the issue I was having with Windows 7 wanting to change to basic color scheme when I had several apps open while playing BF3 and alt tabbing in and out of them.

I have 16GB of system memory, you would think Windows would have used some of it. LOL

GTX480 is quiet. Just don't look at the temps or feel the backplate. Its hot!!! 20 mins on BF3 the GPU registered at 188f on auto fan. This is winter remember LOL.

I bought one. I think I will ride with this card until the end of the year. I had a GTX480 but it was an April 2010 model. These things just last forever.

EDIT: Just canceled my order. I think since I have a 6950 that its useless for me to buy this right now. I want to wait until the 7870 is available.

Will two of these tings work with a 750 watt CoolMaster PSU? I'm not sure of the 12V amperage off the top of my head.

No, you can peak almost 600w with just one.

Trying to find a point of comparison for something I've had - would one of these at stock use any more power (or put out more heat) than an overclocked 8800 GTX?

I had an 8800 GTX. Im not certain about how power much it used but can tell you that my 480 doesnt run as hot and is much quieter. That 8800 was like a leaf blower when the fan kicked on high.
