Well, this has been out for awhile, but I just found out about it.. like all MMORPGs.. this game is tedious.. especially if you want to level up, it's also in BETA.. it doesn't really crash or anything, but the servers are quite laggy.. especially during peak usage.

If you want to check it out, visit the Official Ragnarok Online Website

The download links they provide are pretty crappy too, if you search for rag_setup_e.zip with google, it should provide some results. I personally suggest retrieving the file from fileplanet, you might have to wait in line, but at least the servers are fast.

You can visit some fansites for more information on this game..

File Mirrors
FilePlanet - Requires registration with GameSpy Network
BitTorrent - Requires the BitTorrent Client CVS Builds Official Release
ed2k://|file|rag_setup_e.zip|598094466|7F28BAD2F91C8D1AFEB3F8E9BCF5394C|/ - Requires eDonkey, eMule, or Overnet Client
-- Link for ED2K is not working properly, copy it and paste it into your client to download it. I think the command for ed2k and overnet is "dllink (ed2k address)" w/out quotes and parenthesis. I don't use emule so I don't know

So yea, if you want to waste your life away playing an MMORPG, here's a free one

--Shinj1EVA

PS. Because of this game, I no longer have much of a life.. i MUST make a level 99 character

Edit: Added mirror links.

Update: Becomes a P2P (Pay to Play) service. Pre-Registration starts tomorrow (05/30) and service begins June 1st. Try it while you can.. I'm too addicted to not pay for it..

Not really as addictive as EverCrack or UO, but there is an upside: None of the negativity involved in death.

When you die in RO, you go back to your spawn point with 1 health and everything you had beforehand.

As a person who has spent 8 hours in tears going back trying to find my corpse 7 zones away in EverCrack, and dying every time I get close enough to see my corpse, or spending 5-6 hours running back and forth in UO getting PKed and losing all the work I've put into my characters' stuff for the last month, I find it oddly comforting to find a MMORPG where death means almost nothing. The feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you realize you're in a situation where you're going to lose everything, it just doesn't happen in this game, and I love it for that.

Other than that, it is quite tedious at times, there isn't much strategy involved, the lag is terrible, and almost all the monsters are normal melee... but I'm still playing it.

Think UO Lite combined with Diablo2, and Disneyized by actual Engrish MMORPG players.
About a fifth the 'high' that I got with EQ, but no 'morning after,' of death.

RO is a very nice MMRPG, and I love the visual style, but it quickly becomes a skinner's box -- even worse then everquest does. Also, when I was playing during the last beta, the lag killed it for me.

For those that do want to play though, one important note. Starting stats matter a TON in this game. Find a RO site out there that gives you some pointers on how to set up a charater, or you'll have to start over fairly quickly.

Well, in RO, the PK system has been temporarily removed. You can fight against other characters, just not right now, and there's no random PKing either.. Some other stuff not implemented include getting married (yes you can marry your characters, keep in mind that a female avatar does NOT necessarily mean a female player ), a pet system (there's taming items in the game already, but you can't use them yet), and the mentioned PK system.

And I like this a lot better.. not like diablo 2.. where you spend half your life trying to find the greatest and best equipment for your character.. only to be PKed.. and when you run back down to get your body.. pick up only part of your items.. and get PKed again.. only to watch hours of your life disappear as your attacker picks up all your loot That is probably the worst feeling in the world.. short of maybe getting fired or breaking up... But its up there...

man, i don't see how so many ppl got addicted to evercrack. i tried playing it TWICE and it was just so boring in the beginning i quickly lost interest.

on the otherhand i tried the free demo of ac 2 and the beginning went by fast and that's something i could see myself wasting away on and i think it has a easier/nicer interface.

i think i'll get ac 2 and use my evercrack for the rebate.
i'm also waiting for wow. it's blizzard so it must be good. lol

What's AC2? I never tried any MMORPG before, only thing close to it would be Diablo II, but that's not really a true MMORPG. And EQ & UO just don't seem that interesting.. I only started playing this game cuz it was free

(to above poster)

AC2 is asheron's call 2. which is absolutely nothing like asheron's call 1.

IMO the only really great MMORPG has been AC1. the rest have really just been everquest clones with a few things added (and yes I have played most of them).. and I hated everquest. anarchy online was good except I feel missions just killed it... made it feel too single player and monotonous.
I got sick of AC1 after 3 years so now the only MMORPG I have hope for is WoW.

so anyway... there's my personal summary of MMORPGs. I'm sure someone who likes everquest's style will suggest one of the various clones it's spawned. it's all a matter of preference i suppose.

If anyone cares my name is Chobits_Misasto (okay so I spelled Misato wrong ) and I'm a level 28 Mage.

The only problem IS the lag. I started playing the day it came out in the new beta and only about 6-8k people were on the servers...and it was lag free and fun as hell

But now there are on average 10-12k people playing and the lag is SOOO unbearable.

It sucks especially when you are a mage with a high attack power, but no defense and you are trying to level up by killing Flora (you get like 8% EXP for a kill at level 28. At level 21 I got like 40% per one) and avoid The Argos (a spider that will attack you even if you don't provoke it) which will slaughter ANY level 28 character pretty fast.

Moral of story- Play at 3 AM when the lag in minute.

And it is my first MMOPG so I really can't comment on others. Though I do prefer console RPGs to this mainly due to the lack of a story...really here is the point of the game in a nutshell:

A glorified text chat where you kill things and level up soley for bragging rights

Then again even the talking part is rare. I've met nice people and would sit down and talk but most people don't want to and they move on.

EDIT:

It also seems that a lot of people who have played other MMORPGS complain over the Experience they earn...to be more specific the lack of experience and most "vets" of MMORPGS complain that you get very little experience and I would have to agree since if I kill things at my "level" (not someting easy but something you fight for) I get like 1.5% at the most

It's not a rumor. It's posted on their site.

$12/month is too much for a glorified leveling machine...

Well, you are so wrong, that's called reality !! when u die, u suppose lose everything, in UO that's wat made it fun, you can loot other people's stuff. Right now in AC2, death mean nothing but less HP and vigor, but wat's the fun in that, people can just keep on dying for fun ... so there is a positive and negative side to it, but to me, UO has give me the most fun in the old time, MORE POWER to UO =D

Everyone keeps comparing this to EQ & UO, which are dinosaurs IMO. Doesn't anyone here play Dark Age of Camelot? How does RO compare to a truly innovative MMORPG like that one?

Gosh - think I've played quite a bit of MMORPH - let me count the way -

[boast]
Played EQ first, followed by anarchy online, then dark age of camelot, and asheron's call(latest) and a couple more i believe...
[/boast ends]

Gosh. I find them all of them suck xcept EQ... but it's beyond addiction - ever stepped into class at 8 in the morning and wondering how you're trying to kill or can't wait to kill a rare spawn? Oh man. It took me 3 months to step out of that realm. None of the games so far has since caught my attention...*lucky i didn't get EQ for PS2... wouldn't be "alive" and typing here if i did...

*Anyone want to go back and do EverCrack with me?

My friend LOVES Ragnarok, and has been playing since the start of the Beta. Visually, it's like Secret of Mana.

This game is a piece of crap, first of all it dosen't work on some radeon cards, the texture will just be BLACK. Second, for their kinda of server, lag take place EVERY SECOND, you have to wait like 10 second for it to move 1 step in prontera(heavy populated capital city). Ill pay 12 cents for their service but not 12 DOLLAR. Consider their taiwanese and korean version are 10X better support and infoamtive than their internation one.
