Hmm, well I made a copy of a friends retail systemworks cd.

As far as I can see, given that i'm not a lawyer and I dont play one on tv, since they had an offer for a free disk, sent me an email confirming that they intended to send me a free license/copy, whether they actually did or not isnt completely relevant. Sounds like I have the legal ok to use it as a legal copy.

Hey Symantec! You wanna try gettin' after me about using your product improperly? "Well your honor, they offered me a free copy, sent me an email saying they confirmed they'd be sending me a free copy, then used my email to send me promotions, are they now saying they really had no such intention? My goodness, isnt that fraudulent?!?"

Snork.

Not quite as backward as the, "Well, Microsoft OS's suck, and need a lot of patches, so I should be able to pirate them." argument.

Really? I'm missing the part that makes it backwards.

The manufacturer offers a free license and media for use by me.

I give them my information.

They confirm their intent to send me the media using the information provided.

They use my information to send me spam for their benefit.

The media doesnt arrive.

I presume they forgot, it got lost in the jumble, lost in the mail, whatever.

Media is available to me.

Intent to license at no cost isnt rescinded because the media got lost in the mail.

I use available media in conjunction with the manufacturers stated intent to a free license.

Where is the backward part again?

Oh yeah, its possible that they either never intended to offer the free product, which would be illegal, or offered it, used information supplied for their benefit and then chose to not provide the free product offered, which would also be illegal or they made a mistake in publishing the offer and then decided not to make good on it or inform the subscribers of their mistake and offering to make good on it, which would also be illegal. Yeah, thats kinda backwards.

Yeah, I too signed up for this and have receieved nothing but spam. I think we've all been taken here. I guess the lesson learned here is don't give out your e-mail address for promises of a product.

I hope you don't use your primary email for signing up for this stuff. If you use your junk email account, then what difference does all the spam really make? On another note, I haven't received any email from Norton except the confirmation.

Did they actually send you the offer? Or did you find it here?

I doubt Symantec themselves has sent any spam, it's more than likely asshats confusing the tons of spam SELLING Symantec stuff, not DIRECTLY from Symantec..
