Anyone wanna hook me up with a boxed E4300? I don't need the motherboard (I'm serious by the way!)

i hope they learned the first time around about the bios update...

Ross, i'd probably (well, i am) going with the S3 (DS3 if you could afford it)

I wonder what if they begin to bundle a better mb such as DS3 with E4300 and sell at decent price I think that would be a enormous hit!

they sell the 965g version of the ds3 maybe if it was the 965P - But i've never seen them sell a decent board at a killer price - they have another combo but its a LOT more as their usual as motherboard prices there aren't all that great - most of the time these combos are only good for getting the cpu at a decent price + a junky ECS board free

This can be QUITE hot potentially:
The OEM e4300's that Fry's got are horriful overclockers. I played with two of them (on a P5N-E SLI and a D975XBX2) and I could not get either stable at 3 GHZ. The retail chips could have come from a different point on the assembly line, and overclock like the E4300 in Anandtech's review.

I went to Fry's last night at the Palo Alto branch. They had tons of the mobo and all of them were returns from the deal 3 weeks ago. The sales rep tried to BS me by saying all they had available are the returned mobo. Good thing i bumped into someone who had a brand new mobo in his basket. I asked him where he got the new box since the sales rep told me all they had left are the open boxes. The guy told me they had a lot of the new mobos at the back (receiving area).

Sure enough, i told the sales person that i wanted the NEW mobo which were in the receiving area, he grudgingly went and got a new one for me. I have a feeling that the sales rep knew they had new stock but wanted to get rid of the old ones first. Just be aware of this trickery.

You may need to flash the BIOS.

How do I flash this if it doesn't even boot up. I don't have another spare CPU laying around.

Anyways...I found an Prescott CPU laying around and popped it in to the mobo. Flashed the mobo with the latest bios firmware. Popped back the E4300 and now it boots up and everything is working fine.

Well...for starters...don't use that ECS board...

Lol...that's a given. I'm probably going to go with an ASUS ... so. I'm switching from AMD to intel ....so I know with AMD we had these steppings...so certain batches did better then other batches of CPUs. Is it the same with the C2d e4300? If so how can I tell if I got one from a good batch?

oh great - i got the oem last week, have it installed stock in the ecs i got with it - no issues at all just yet - got my Asus P5N-e SLI today and i'm still hoping that its going to overclock fairly well - if not i'm going to return the whole deal and get retail but only time will tell...just now i'm worried - i'll post up oem OC results (fingers crossed) -

side note can't remember if it was everest or sandra but it was being displayed as an engineering sample....

Isn't the CPU just $10 more at Newegg?

For me it'd be cheaper to get it @ the egg after tax and shipping...

I think you guys should just sell off the crapy mb on ebay and use the cash toward getting a nicer board. If the bundled CPU is retail then you really getting a price break on this deal.

Friend of mine did it on a 9dxx series combo deal. It would boot but real unstable on 2 different ecs MBs. They let him trade up to a same chipset gigabyte. About $20 more as both boards were about $54 reg price but the ecs comes out at around $35 in the combo deal.

its just YMMV when you return just the board. some people don't know the policy, most people do. also, if you're the type to take the time to convince them that the board won't work with the cpu and convince them to let you swap it out for another board while getting the same price, to you!

One of the reasons I picked this up was for the MB. I still got regular DDR and a AGP graphics card.
