Problem is...Dell doesn't seem to know what's being used. First Dell rep. I talked to said he didn't know. Another went to ask, and said either WD or Seagate. Two people here have said they got 40GB Maxtor drives in their 4550s. So word-of-mouth from owners seems much more reliable than Dell.

the seagate barricuda might be like 5-10% quieter, but they are about 20% slower than a western digital drive, so they are going to be making a lot more noise over a period of time..

Yup,
As long as you're over $749 on Dimension 4550's you can apply the coupon and receive the $50 off of EACH system (up to 5 total).

You can ditch some of the pricey options and come out with 2 really cheap systems ...

This is a ball bearing drive.

The fluid ones are 6L040L2.

Thanks. I somehow missed that when looking at the data sheet earlier. StorageReview said the non-FDB version was noisy when seeking, so I hope it's not too bad. Looks like Dell is using the whole d740x line for the Dimension 4550, unless someone reports otherwise. So I can throw out the idea of getting a quieter drive with fluid bearings.

Can someone who got the system already with the free LCD verify which version of the E151FPp LCD Dell shipped? There are 2 very different pictures on the website. The one on Dell Home shows it with 5 buttons and it seems really thick while the same model on Dell SB is much sleeker looking. Anyone know?

Thanks. I didnt even notice the extra little p. A bit misleading as I thought I would be receiving the one shown on SB site. Its about 2 inches thinner and 2lbs lighter than the E151FP.

Do you need to have recently purchased something from Dell to get a Coupon Code? The reason I'm asking is that a buddy of mine at work just bought a laptop from them a month or two ago, and if he has a Coupon Code just rotting in his Dell account, then I might be able to convince him to let me have it before it expires

I ordered one with the same configuration on Friday, and got a 256mb DDR RAM from a member here.

choose it with integrated sound ($30 less than the live, and well you'll still have sound)

128mb ddr333
p4 2.4b
40gb 7200 rpm (its worth $10 to get this upgrade)
40x cdrw
15" LCD
gf4 ti4200 64mb ($90 upgrade is reasonable, and gets you past $749)

works
mshome
no speakers
1 year warranty

its $639 after the coupons

major companies, usually use many sources for drives.

seeing as fluid bearing generally costs more, i'd count on a ball bearing being in there, unless they are using a seagate (seagate has fluid in every drive they make).

when i was working at hp a few summers ago, they used every major drive manufacturer and i'd assume dell does also.

I got onto the last deal which is 2 weeks ago... Now I called back saying I want to return it since I hate rebate. They offer me a CD-RW, then I say "em... how about make that into cash instead?" Then she says she can give me up to em... $80... "Hell yeah~ I would like that!" It will be credit to your account in 5-7days... "Thanks!"
Now my computer is 691taxed - 100rebate = 591 - 80 = 511!!! Pretty nice consider the extra 20G and CDRW can be bought around $30 each... I am up 40 from this deal!

Has anyone received a tracking number yet? Mine says In Transit. Where does Dell usually ship from anyway?

I have a dead PC and this Dell won't set me back much more than a new Mobo/CPU/memory and decent video card would. I ordered yesterday and mine is still listed as "In Production."

Now to find a hot deal on a new Mobo/CPU/memory and decent video card!!

I called also and said I was dissappointed that the price of the computer has gone down since last week when I purchased mine. They only gave me a $60 credit, but hey , that's better than nothing. In the end I bought two computers for $987, and sold one for $670 and one for $562. I kept one of the lcds for myself and pocketed about $220 also. Thank you Dell!!!

Can someone please explain this?

I go here and using premium audio, it starts off at $758.00.

However, if I choose basic audio, it starts at $888.00.

WTF?

This has already been addressed several times. Remove Office XP and select MS Works.

I don't know how they did it, but it is incredible. dell did a good job this time. prompt delivery, all packages were sent fedex 2nd day
and the system is awesome. . very well designed case
nice documentation, all softwares were full-pledged. there are about 6 cds in total, unlike other manufacturer put everything in one cd which tends to break easily.
price is just right. Gforce4 mx is pretty good , it performs somewhere in between gforce2 and gforce3 depends on the application. and for only 20 bux more, its well worth it.
the LCD is beautiful, though there is no dvi input, for 80 bux its well worth it.
keyboard is ok, the only thing that kinda sucked is the mouse, which isn't optical..
overall, this is the best deal i've ever came across

g8man - Which hard drive model # did you get?

I think those who order the base 30GB model (a new option vs. the 20GB from a couple weeks ago) are getting the newer DiamondMax Plus8 model with Fluid Bearings (default in this series).

If you do call to get a pricematch do not talk to a guy named Grant. He just gave me the runaround the entire time. Last time I called to get a pricematch I got it immediately. He told me they would have to submit something to another group and they would total up the price of the components and give me a refund if it is over $50 which would take 7-10 days to even come up with the price.

I eventually got him to transfer me to returns and the lady offered me a CDRW to avoid me sending the computer back. Funny thing is the lady was able to tell me that it was about $30 difference now whereas Grant was telling me that it would take the 7-10 days to come up with that figure.

BTW, I got the base system with the upgrade to 40GB HD and the Geforce 4 MX. They couldn't pricematch directly to the configuration now because of the difference in HD and CDRW but you can still get something out of the call because you can ship your other back and get this new configuration which is not what Dell wants.
