Did you redo the order on the 24th or did you receive the delivery it on the 24th? . The rebate reads " ...with an order date between Oct 24, 2002 and Oct 30, 2002.

Aircasper, let us all know when you find that deal on the PC2700 memory. Two slots is kinda limiting... So I was thinking about getting one stick, but the dealers really stick (heh, no pun intended) it to you on 1 stick of 512MB vs. 2 sticks of 256MB. I would end up with 640MB of memory, which is kinda funny since my first PC, back in the day, had 640K! Also, are there any mods for this system. Is the HS an Intel retail HS? Can it be replaced? I know the system fan is kinda proprietary and quiet. Maybe it doesn't need any mods, just like to mess around and I haven't had a retail PC since, well, since I don't remember!

You can get a better 92mm fan for the exhaust, make sure to get a 3pin -> molex because the onboard power is propetary.

I cringed when I read this comment-you have a properly engineered and beautifully quiet machine. I've always built my machines, but got one of these for my adult sisters because we are building an addition and I have no time. I was extremely impressed at how well its laid out and how absolutely silent it is-if I had the need and $ I'd buy one for myself.

If you absolutely feel compelled to "mod" it, make very sure that anything you do can be reversed. How any "mod" would be an improvement escapes me-you will probably end up with just another noisy computer that runs .0001% faster or cooler. But before moding it I would park my vaccuum cleaner next to my machine, turn it on & say to myself-do I really miss this noise?

LOL! i certainly can relate to that. the moment i turned it on, i started yelling to my wife downstairs to come up and listen to how quiet this computer is. she thought i was crazy at first, but when she came up, she was actually very impressed as well. i'm not sure if i'll ever go back to making my own computers, knowing how well (and quiet) these dell machines are made.

speaking of cheap ddr, i've heard fry's has generic 512MB DDR 2700 sticks at $120 (don't know if it's still available at that price). i also read somewhere that they were offering the basic corsair 512MB DDR 2700 stick for about $129. the only thing i miss about the athlon system (which i sold yesterday) is the nice mushkin 512MB DDR 2100 stick i had in there.

I know it sounds crazy, it just doesn't seem right to not want to tinker with my computer, sorta like hot rodders who mess with their cars all the time. Besides the fan and PS, I wonder how rounded cables will look and if it is even worth the bother? Getting this deal is like I traded in a highly modified Chevy SS for a BMW 740i - still lots of performance, but I doubt I would ever get under the hood again...

Thanks for the heads up on the rebate! Dell had to cancel and reorder my 3 orders for the Dell 4550 on the 24th and 25th...wohoo...an extra $300 for me!

I went to Fry's to buy the 512mb PC2700 memory. Here is what's on the chips: Winbond 24320 W942508BH-6 and it's double-sided. The label has a delta symbol followed by an omega symbol, then M10705. Anybody have any info on this memory? I'm worried about it being double-sided and working with the 128mb stick that I ordered with the machine. Anybody want to weigh in on this? Their return policy is only 15-days for memory so my system better get here quick! (Supposed to arrive this week, but ya neva know!)

Edit>>> Did a little research after this post and I found that the Winbond chips are actually pretty good. VR-Zone has a nice review of DDR333 memory, and although none of the reviewed are this brand, two or three had the same exact memory chips and the review was quite complementary. Review link -->VR-Zone
The Delta Omega brand is a product of PDP Systems. Their link is PDP Systems, but I didn't see anything on their site about this particular module, which does make you a bit wary. There is a phone number, so I may give them a call just to be on the safe side. Also, they show their memory has a lifetime warranty, but Fry's lists it with a 1-year warranty, but I only saw this on a price label on their big memory display board. There was no additional warranty info included with the chip.

I went for the 4550 deal but I customized the PC and my price came out to $579. It calculated tax, free shipping and gave me my total. I could have swore I hit submit and it thanked me for placing the order. However, 3 days went by and no confirmation email. I called them up and they said my order wasn't listed. Could it be that they deleted my order?

IMPORTANT QUESTION!

Those of you who ordered this and have opened your 15" E151FP LCD box ... was there any sort of invoice/billing/receipt in the LCD box? Any piece of paper with your name, address or cc info?

Thanks.

I got one on Saturday via USPS (picked up at the post office). It even had a USPS tracking number on it.

When I go to the dell order status page, it shows this:

All of the information is the latest provided by the carriers.

This information is current as of Monday, October 28, 2002. If you feel that this information is out of date, please try clearing your browser cache and reloading the page.

You can go to www.shipapx.com, and enter those tracking numbers. It appears that Dell uses APX to deliver to local post offices, and the USPS delivers it the last leg of the journey to your home.

My order was delivered last week (APX/USPS) and it still shows as "In Transit" through the Dell site.

Per the license agreement shipping with all versions of XP your OS is licensed to your machine, not you. The 4550 is the only legitimate machine you can install it on.

And yes, Microsoft is watching...
