So my Western Digital Mybook just died after transfering ~30 gigs of media to it. Yea, pain in the ass. But my real question is this, will best buy give me a hard time about replacing the drive(hopefully to another brand)? I have receipt and I think most of the packaging. Thoughts? Has that happened to anyone else? Will I have to go through Western Digital to RMA it?

Just take it back and complain. Be an asshole, and the managers there will kiss your ass. Everyone knows this.

Bring it back... if it was 3 days ago, they should be able to exchange it ... their Loser Squad should be able to verify its DOA.

as long as you have a receipt, they are cool. Usually don't even ask what's wrong with it.

Some items have 14 day return policies.
Read on the back of your receipt.
For sure it is computers, digital camera, GPSs, etc.

You are well within the return period, so it shouldn't be a problem.
You should be able to exchange it for any other brand or item.

I say don't return it since it's painfully obvious what you should be doing yet you feel the need to ask strangers.

I don't think the people at BB get paid enough to grill people on why they're returning something. Hell I bought an external hardrive used it for a week then returned it. They didn't even bat an eye.

I understand the OP's reason for questions.

Stores change their return policies all the time.
Just the other day I had a similar thread about Best Buy's return policy.
I had no idea it was 14 Days on digital cameras.
Also, there is a 15% restocking fee on many items now.

I figured everything was 30 Days... but it appears those days are gone.

Also, although my camera was on day 22, they still exchanged it and didn't even mention that it was past the 14 Days.
(It had a bad CCD pixel)

It's been a 14-day return policy for digital cameras for years at BB. Wonder what your confusion was? Like not reading the back of the receipt where the entire return policy is explained?

restocking only applies if you are returning (used) without cause. Defective exchange is never an issue. Within the stated time limit of course.

I would not be surprised if you did not believe this statement when you wrote it.

I think the incident you're referring to is a seagate or quantum drive being returned as a WD drive, dude got it home and it was the wrong product.

actually there are more then one incident. Hell i purchased a 33.6 modem from them and when i got home the box had a 14.4 modem in it. i took it back but they refused to exchange it. Now i open the box in the store to make sure it has exactly what it says.

but i also remember reading that they got nailed for doing such stuff like 3-4 years ago.

Bought a 'new' Samsung LED DPL TV from Best Buy only to open at home and find it in a 'significantly used' state. The manual had writing all over it, hair stuck all over the back of the TV, it was dusty, no batteries for the remote, AND it wasn't even strapped in properly to the box.

Needless to say, that was the last time I've been to a BB.

I would have went one more time to return the TV But seriously, that sucks.

I worked at Best Buy for a very short stint while interviewing for other jobs after I moved once.

We used to shrink wrap returns if nothing was wrong with them, this was like 2 years ago...
