As far as your post of the 280's being 10x the headphones of the 497's, the truth is you cannot really compare them. The 497's are open-air headphones, while the 280's are closed. They have two different applications, and depending on the user the 280's that are "10x" better may not be feasible. The 280's will have better lower frequency response and reproduction due to the closed ear design, but they are no "10x" the headphones of the 497's, which are a very good set themselves.

10x the heaphones of the 497's would definitely be a step up to the 500/600 series of seinnheiser headphones, which cost about 10x the price

/edit 280's are great if you need a nice set of closed ear headphones that wont break the bank over and over again

I have to disagree, the 280's are definitley superior to the 497's. Check around at some review sites and the headwize forums. As far as 10X the price for 580/600 that is also wrong. I believe you can get 600's for around 300$ which is a great deal.

These are great headphones, especially for gaming and modern music. They do fine for classical but if you listen to primarily classical the 580's are a better choice. However for this price these phones are really hard to beat. People also recommend Grado. Personally Ithink the Grado's suck, but to each their own.

I ordered early in the morning yesterday (maybe 7:00 AM), and I got an email overnight that they have already shipped. I had bought a pair from Amazon at Christmas fo $69 + something -$10 off $75, that work great. Needed another pair and this was a great price.

Since they are still on the site (albeit at a higher price) I assume all placed otders at $49 will still fill.

The 580/600 aren't that much better than the 497's unamped. However, if you amp those bad boys then you get at least 10x better sound and start closing in on 10x the price.

neither (497 or 280) will benefit significantly with an amp. its really not worth getting an amp for these guys. and the hd280 is closed, whereas the hd497s are open. hd280s sound darker, and dont isolate much for closed headphones. hd497s are brighter and the sound is slightly more colored than the hd280s but not much. the hd600s are a lot better like you said, but definately need an amp to sound even better than the hd497s. yes, its true, they would sound worse in comparison without a decent source and amp. ive previously had a hd600 with an equinox cable, from a maxed meta42, and let me tell you, it was bad. my friend's pair of K501s sounded better which were like $100 less. Anyhow, i switched to beyer DT880s and now everything's cool.
