I realized I asked the question in this thread poorly, and probably should ask the right questions in the right forum. Thank you to those that replied. I apologize for asking my question so poorly.

Original post:

There must be a great resource for my question, the only problem is, I can't find it.

Currently I have a home desktop, wife's laptop, office desktop (at a totally different physical location)
My goal is to put a cheap box out by the TV for hulu/netflix/music/etc. and set up a home server (WHS?). This would also let me put all the photos, music, etc... in one place for the first time. Obviously this would make life easier.

First question: anyone know of a guide or site that would be, not just a starting place, but a good resource to walk through the hardware and software discussions.

Second: I would love to be able to back up, not just redundancy, but also at a different physical location, this same data. Anyone have a clue how I could go about backing up either to a drive on the office computer, or to a server at the office?

Thanks in advance

Well, setting up a home server is not a hard task, but it require some maintenance. Also, there are some things you need to consider first such as 24x7 high-speed internet connection, Power, decide the platform and install Apache and IIS and other softwares, etc... My post count is very low so I can't post the link, but you can search the Google using this term "setting up your own home server". You will get good results and proper steps to set up your own WHS. Good Luck !!

http://www.wegotserved.com/ is an awesome resource for Windows Home Server. The how to section has some setup guides. I've also set up my own FreeNAS, which you may want to look at instead of WHS.

As for remote backups, there are a lot of solutions. If you're wanting to backup a large amount of data, though, I would suggest getting as much upload bandwidth as you can afford. It can take weeks or months of uploading to get something like 1TB (or more) to somewhere remote. You may want to do the external hard drive thing and keep one at the office.
