You're talking about 100% humidity. I wouldn't bet on it. Anyway, you are going to get steam on the screen if you do that and your picture will degrade. Ever try driving with a fogged up windshield? That kind of thing. That's saying nothing about the potential for problems from the high humidity affecting the components - seems to me a definite possibility. I don't think I'm putting one in my bathrooms.

Well, you do have to be careful. Burn in is possible with plasma displays, especially when the brightness and contrast are turned up too high. Be careful of static images. Use something like Digital Video Essentials to calibrate the display as soon as possible for the best picture quality, and some measure of protection from burn in.

I changed my order to the Electrograph 42" today. Cost $8 more. The sales droid was able to apply my coupons on the new order. There is no way I was going to wait 6 months for the panasonic panel. My new ship date is 11/21 with no delays expected.

Anyone else get this email today from Dell regarding their order?

My ship date is still 12/1, so I'm sticking with the Panny order... I don't know how comfortable I feel about the Electrograph. And the other two 'optional plasmas' are laughable in comparison of the specs. I spent about an hour this morning bouncing from Rep to Rep at Dell and nobody had an answer for me about a possible better estimate on shipping date. The 3rd rep I spoke to actually asked me to send him the email so he knew what it looked like. They were "informed" about it, but nobody forwarded them a copy.

I assume they are going to get quite a few upset calls today regarding this email.

Hope I made the right decision.

-Nick

P.S. The specs are all out of whack b/c dell posted them in the email as a table.

Dear Customer,

You recently purchased from Dell the Panasonic TH-42PWD6UY 42-inch plasma TV (DELL SKU: A0160748) with an estimated lead time of 21 days. Due to unanticipated, overwhelming demand and supply constraints, we estimate that it may take as long as six months for us to fulfill all outstanding orders, although some customers may receive their order earlier due to product availability.

We value you as a customer and understand this extended delivery date may cause some inconvenience. Therefore we would like to present you with the following options:

1. Select from one of three comparable products available that we estimate will ship within the next 14 days. They are listed below with their prices and technical specifications. Dell will still honor the ?20% off list price? offer and include free shipping as well. This option is only available if you decide to cancel your current Panasonic model order. If you wish to take advantage of this option, please reply to this email (US_DELL_NOTIFY@DELL.COM) with your current order number and please indicate which item that you would like and we would be happy to create the new order for you.

Please note that quantities are limited on the replacement products. We will do our best to change your order to the new product that you have selected, but in the event of an excess of demand on a particular product, we may be required to notify you again of supply constraints, at which point all three options listed here remain available to you. In any of these cases, the quantity of substitute products shipped may not exceed that of your original order.

2. If you wish to preserve your order for the original Panasonic product, with the delayed ship date, please reply to this email (US_DELL_NOTIFY@DELL.COM) with your current order number. Please note that if we do not hear from you within ten business days of your receiving this email, we must cancel the order.

3. Alternatively, you may choose to cancel your original order if the delivery window noted will not meet your needs. To cancel your order, please reply to this email (US_DELL_NOTIFY@DELL.COM) with your current order number.

We thank you for your business

Dell does not know when they will ship. Their distributor(Electrograph) has a slight idea of when they might ship. They had a meeting with Panasonic on the 6th and were told that the orders will not be able to be filled till after the new year. I got this right from a rep at Electrograph. Some people have been told that their orders may not be filled for 6 months.

Burn in is not really an issue anymore, unless you're still playing Pong or Space Invaders or some other basic game that has a fixed playing screen. You could play Battlefield 1942 for the next 10 years and not have a burn in problem. The only place I ever saw screen burn in was at my job, on old monochrome CRTs that were used to run Lotus 123. That was at least 15 years ago.

Ah, very interesting. I had not heard about the Sanyo chip. So deinterlacing, scaling, and processing are all different? Got a URL on differences?

Thanks!

No links. I spoke to a tech at Electrograph today about some of the differences.

I had this in my cart around 2 weeks ago but didn't pull the trigger. I was just too green and uncertain, especially after reading the posts in this thread about projection possibly being a better bang for the buck. Yesterday I ordered a Sanyo PLV-Z2 1280 x 720 native resolution projector, and I should have it in a week. I also ordered a Momitsu DVD-880V PS DVD-I player from overseas.

So are the differences large enough between the Panasonics and the Champion to NOT get the Champion?

I wish I could find more info on the Champion... but there dosen't seem to be much out there on the unit.

I don't know enough about the Sanyo internals to know if the Panasonics are really better or not. I just know that everything I read on this Panasonic plasma pretty much chalked it up to be a small wonder even at EDTV resolutions.

I can wait a little while to get my plasma... but I don't know if I can wait into the new year... new toyitus is going to get the better of me if I'm not careful... just want to know if the Champion is an ok choice to make if I can't wait any longer.

I personally just feel better looking up at my plasma and seeing a brand name I know rather than one I don't.

EDIT: I just found these two links to the Champion 42CVI display...
http://www.monitoroutlet.com/the-monitor-outlet/999215.html
http://www.anzwers.org/trade/hdtv/CHAMPIONVISION42CVI.html

The first directly compares the Panny to the Champion... and they seem to share EVERYTHING...
The second links to the Panny PDF when you click the specs sheet for the Champion...

Are we sure they aren't the same display just rebadged?

The Sanyo because in this price class it has about the highest resolution around (native 1280 x 720). Also, it has a DVI-I input, a significant feature. It also has an iris, which is pretty unheard of in this price class, and we're talking $2000 and below projectors. In fact, I got this for $1895 plus shipping ($17). PM me if you want to know the dealer. It's bright enough if you can control ambient light decently. It's said to have adequate brightness even if have moderate ambient light, but I should be able to control mine well enough. It is a short throw projector, but that's what I need because I'll project from about 10 feet, however I think it goes up to 20 feet. Go to www.projectorcentral.com for details on it. Lots of threads in the AVS Forums on it now. Bulb life is not known, partly because Sanyo doesn't like to publish bulb life expectancies. If you don't use the high bulb setting a lot, probably longer, and I probably won't, but I don't know.

Edit: For screen I think I'll buy a piece of Gator Board, 48 x 96 (white matte). Said to be a real good cheap screen. Search the Screens Forum at AVS Forums for threads containing "Gator". In my case, I noticed the thread whose title is "Absolutely Best Cheap Screen", and decided it was probably indeed a good choice for me. It's maybe $60-80, apparently has an excellent functionality as a screen in sufficiently light-controlled situations, and I don't even have to paint it - a definite plus. I just have to try to make sure it doesn't get dented or otherwise screwed up, and I have to cut and mount it. I'm going to get the 1/2 inch thick stuff, not the 3/16 inch. It's only a bit heavier (11 lb instead of 10 lb), but should provide more stiffness, doesn't cost much more.

I actually called Electograph today and spoke with someone in their Tech department.

I asked them what the real differences were between the Electograph and the Panny...

[*]The Electrograph does in fact use the Panny Glass and the Sanyo electronics (which we already knew)

[*]The Major difference is in the connections and how they can be changed and updated later...
- The Panny has the 3 module slots which you can upgrade later, however the tech seemed to take issue with the fact that the standard inputs seemed to be spread across the modules they give you standard, which means if you decideto upgrade later you might lose something you needed.
- The Electrograph has only one module slot, but standard it comes with 2 Component, 2 Composite, 2 S-Video, and 1 15Puin DSUB VGA, while the Panny only comes with one of each.

[*]While it's a bias opinion, the tech said he actually preffered the Electrograph over the Panny, I assume b/c of the Sanyo electronics. He also said the menus were a bit easier to navigate on the Electrograph.

Needless to say I switched my order to the Electrograph today and my delivery date is 11/24. Just have to wait and see how it is. It was a hard decision to make, but I bit the bullet... I was just afraid the 28% (20% + 10% stackable) + free shipping was going to go to waste. I don't see even in the next few months 42" plasmas for just over $2000.

csaddict: Please let me know your impressions of it when you get yours... just want to know what to expect. And what are you doing for a mount? I ordered a Panny mount from www.racksandstands.com, It was a universal meant for the Panny, so I hope it still works with this screen.

Good job on keeping your discount. I have heard people were having a hard time doing that. I was going to wall mount it but the entertainment center we bought at Ikea will require me to buy a stand. I don't know if a panny stand will work with it or not. I would guess it will but I would call Electrograph for sure. The Dell part # for the Electrograph desktop stand is A0151998. I am waiting to order it to see if I can get a good coupon. My plasma should be here Monday so I don't want to wait too long though.

Count me as someone who has not been able to. I have gone through 4 different dell reps and none would go more than 20% on the switched plasma. IF anyone who was successful in getting their original 20+10 honored on the swap pls PM me with your reps name!

thanks!
