I purchased the next best model up from Dell when they had the weird 25% off coupon. Got it for ~ $3900.

I can say a couple of things about it:
1. The resolution is not the most important factor about this display. The real kicker on this one is the best black levels in the business -- very important for watching ANYTHING, especially DVDs. These displays MUST be properly calibrated with a calibration DVD kit (usually available at your local Hollywood/Blockbuster).
2. The resoltion (1024x768) is beautiful, however, using a progressive-scan dvd player. The display is ONLY as a good as the image you feed it, and not all DVD players are alike.
3. Typing up this message on a 42" screen is nice, but it would be better with DVI in. With this panasonic, you get to choose either the multi-input card or the ONLY DVI input card (sold separately) ... so I'm getting a bit of a flicker here at 75 hz from my laptop using a standard analog VGA connector. No way to get rid of the "screen stretch" and have it still look nice, so on windoze it is extra wide.
4. STAND MAY NOT BE INCLUDED -- I had to buy on on E-bay for $75, or get a wall-mount for roughly the same.

The main reason for buying a plasma over a projection setup (whether a rear projection TV or LCD projector) is this: Viewing angle and ability to view with sunlight in the room. If you are only going to watch from one horizontal position (such as a single couch) -- go ahead and buy the sony grand wega. You'll probably like it better, and it's the same weight and pretty slim too. Otherwise if you can keep the room reasonably dark, go for a projector, which will not distort your PCs aspect ratio.

Also to note - with Plasma screens, you are betting on the life of the screen (and that you won't drop it or have a big earthquake). So, with LCD projectors, you know your costs (bulb). But with plasma, if you leave it on accidentally and burn it in (it could take weeks) or if you buy a crappy Sampo and the pixels start dropping like flies or the whole thing dims gradually, you're out of luck.

Panasonic makes excellent plasma screens, and you shouldn't get distracted with Hitachi, Gateway, Sampo, etc (all those crummy ones Costco sells). I have seen them and I can tell you there is a difference. BTW, the Hitachi plasma has horrid XVGA image processing, which results in a very noticeable flicker -- gave me a headache for the 5 minutes I was in Circuit City looking at it.

When my friends ask me what is the best bang for their buck, I tell them to buy some curtains, make themselves a screen and buy a 1024x768 projector with a good DVD player. But buy a plasma if you have a lit room and a wide seating area or you find it annoying when the picture brightness changes when you stand up.

One last weird thing about Plasmas -- especially this one -- when you play DVDs on it, depending upon your DVD player (probably) -- you have to monkey around with the display stretch settings for older (less resolution) DVDs such as "Doc Hollywood". Just a FYI.

Man my wife would divorce me and then kill me if I bought this. The no shipping/tax makes it a killer deal though. I am getting nervous I am seriously thinking of ordering this.

Edit: I haven't bought a new TV in 10 years, I hesitate to buy such an expensive unit that isn't even HD. My main TV watching is digital cable on a Tivo, DVD's, and XBOX. Would this set be exceptional for this type of viewing or am I better off waiting and getting a true HDTV? I need convincing.

csaddict, cs = counter strike? I'm wondering how computer games would look on this at 852x480. Is it better to wait for high def versions to drop in price? I don't think I'd want to stretch them to avoid burn in though.

yeah it was for counter strike. I don't have any interest in playing pc games on this tv so I haven't looked at the pros or cons of doing so. Everything I have read is saying these displays are great if you watch dvd or SD signals. This is what I watch for the most part so it seems like a great deal. I feel funny dropping that much on a non HD set though.

You got a scan of that? That would be an absolutely INCREDIBLE deal.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything in their sunday circular:

Advertised Specials, National Circular

I looked at the fine print and it says "Not all products available in all stores or online." If the ad is true, it is a 50'' Widescreen LCD TV, its a panasonic, it is HDTV (NOT EDTV). Only 2999! No rebates or anything, I suggest going down to Cusa and seeing if they have this in their ad. The TV is pictured on the outside cover part of the ad on the inside. Good luck, I wish I had 3,000 for a 50" plasma...

Oh and also, the model number they write is PT-50LC13

EDIT: Here are some of the specs, they look good. DVI and HDTV. Anyone know how many hours these things usually last? For all the features it has I'm seriously thinking of buying one. If this thing lasts longer than 10,000 hours I probably will get it. Also can someone explain the Burn In effect?

That 50" Panasonic says MSRP $2,999.95 so $2999 at Compusa may be the normal price.

Sounds like a good deal. However, if you can wait a year or two you may see drastic fall in PDP (plasma display panel) pricing. According to the latest news, large companies are building new assembly plants in a hurry to meet the forcasted increase in PDP demand...

Ah yeah, ok. That's a big rear projection television set, with extremely poor contrast. They're normally even cheaper than that.

I take it this doesn't come with a stand. I can't believe how expensive the wall mount and stands are for these things.

Thanks for providing a reason not to buy this right now.

You clearly haven't seen a "good" rear projection. Your top of the line Plasma can't touch your top of the line rear or front projection, well unless all you care about is veiwing angles and "brightness". Sorry, but Plasmas are a joke and if you consider what $2700 buys these days in the way of home theater than we can also say they are a complete rip-off.

dude, if you would read any of his prior posts, you would notice Apex is very knowledgeable in the area of Video products.

And if you reread that post, you would notice he was talking about rear projection LCD TVs, which really do have extremely poor contrast. This is a well known limitation of LCD products, all of them, be it rear projection, front projection, or this screen I'm looking at.

I'm pretty sure he knows anything with analog tubes (RPs, CRT projectors, tube tv's) have excellent picture quality. but don't go knocking plasmas just yet. they are not a joke, and have you even seen a good one that was setup properly? they look fabolous. add into this the coolness factor, the slim profile, and a great projector, how can you call it a joke? how bout something a plasma can do, that analog tubes have a hard time ever reproducing? that is perfect geometry.

as an owner of a plasma, and an LCD front projector, and my sister who owns a Pioneer elite HDTV set (all with HDTV DirecTV hooked up), i think my opinion holds a little weight.

plasma - a little more expensive for the screen, size, blacks not perfect (although the pannies have very good blacks), but cool looking, very good picture when calibrated (get Video Essentials or Avia), perfect geometry, gotta watch out for burn in.

lcd projector - kinda cheap, $1000-3000 (mine is the Panny L300u), blacks not too good, gotta watch out for screen door (my panny has the least), need a dark room, but damn it's a beautiful big picture.

EDIT: ok, to keep this on topic, deran, hot deal! bought one last year for $3400. damn.

Well then nevermind, compusa is a b*tch when it comes to false advertising. They make it seem like its a plasma tv, putting it near all the others and calling it LCD.

Hehe, it's not only you. A lot of people are confused by the rear projection LCD sets. I think they do that on purpose.

Went to bestbuy tonight to oogle the plasmas and they had a 46" EDTV Tatung brand plasma that looked incredible. The clarity was so much better than the other sets. The panasonic had the worst picture. It was very blocky looking whenever there was fast movement. It was the TH-42PX20U model.

The tube HDTV sets looked pretty good. 36" HDTV for $1700

APEX -

What equation do you use to compute viewing distance or viewing angle when you have one of the two and a screen's diagonal measurement?

Do you actually have to buy something from Dell to get these coupons or can you sign up somewhere? I subscribed to the "subscriber only" emails on the home page of Dell SB. Will I get these coupons everyone talks about now?

Edit: I found a 20% coupon!

How do you do this? I got an email yesterday from Dell Small Business yesterday indicating 15% off "Select" Software and Peripherals expiring 10/31, but when I go to the Dell Small Business site and search and find the Panasonic TH-42PWD6UY it shows that the price is $2995.95, and if I go to my cart and put in the coupon code they provided me in the email, I get this:

Sub-total $2,995.95

Discounts -$449.39

Shipping1 $80.00

Shipping
Discount1 -$80.00

Tax1 $210.09

Total Price1 $2,756.65

This isn't as good a deal as the 10% off at Home and Home Office because I don't have to pay tax, my being in CA.

Edit: I found a 20% coupon!
