The multimedia celeron with the firewire and controls weighs more, doesn't it? I was thinking there was like a 1 lb. difference. Do you guys think it's better to go with the multimedia setup?

Edit: Hey rkpindia, can you give us a breakdown of what you got and your final price?

Yes 15.1 TFT multimedia base weighs 6.1 versus 5.4 for the 14 TFT but i think the base is MUCH nicer almost thinner visually. Go to best buy/ circuit city for five minutes and look at the ZT1130 which is the standard celeron base versus the ZT1170/1180/1190 which uses the multimedia base. plus no multimedia base NO FIREWIRE (I am 100% positive!!!!)

rkpindia, what was your total price with that configuration? I thought I was getting the multimedia base...now I guess it's time to call up the local Staples manager and do some wheelin' and dealin. rkpindia, I paid $1022 with tax, so it will be $922 after rebate. How much is your configuration?

rkpindia - did you order over the phone? How did you get the -75 shipping - is it automatic with the 2 year extension on warranty? What are the -50/-30/-15, I mean how did you manage that?

state of pennsylvania HAS NO SALEs TAX on computers from feb 17-24 thus under staples 14 day price guarentee the manager signed my reciept and said he will refund the tax.
as for the 50/30/15 they are dollar off coupons which USUALLY are not stackable. you pick one and that's it but this manager seemed to let them all fly. I am not complaining though.

Well, I went back to Staples tonight, and as usual, the manager is not willing to accomodate, and it is TOO LATE to cancel my laptop. I called Staples corporate and told them the situation, and they seem to think(as does the local store manager) that having the wrong picture up on the web page is not a problem...Sometimes I just want to kill Staples.

I had CS send an "urgent message" to try and cancel my laptop, but from what I was told, it will be shipping out anyway. And then the phone CS had the nerve to tell me that if it shipped, I would have to pay a restocking fee if I returned it. What do I do? If it does ship out, should I keep it for $922 after rebate?

The store manager was willing to accomodate to an extent. He told me that if I could find a coupon that would cover shipping, he would retroactively apply it to the order. So if a $75 coupon still works, I'll be getting this for cheaper(assuming it doesn't cancel). What a mess Staples can cause...

I don't see how it can be too late to cancel an order if you ordered a 512 mb system it won't ship for 21 days. Staples can be annoying.

That sucks that they have the wrong picture up there on the web page. I thought I was getting the multimedia system too. But oh well. It's really not that important to have those stylish multimedia buttons on the front. A firewire port is nice to have but not crucial. I mean how many times are you really going to be transfering massive amounts of data to and from your laptop through a firewire port. For most people the usb ports are definately adequate. And there is a benefit in having a lighter laptop. 5.4 lbs is a very nice weight.

That's quite a deal you got there rkpindia. 99% of staples managers will not accomodate people like yours did. What the heck are all those coupons? I've never seen an order with that many coupons on it. Congrats. You got very lucky there.

I'm quite happy with my deal which is under $900 shipped for 14.1 TFT, 1.06 Ghz processor, 512 mb ram, 20 gb hd, upgraded 8 cell Liion battery, 8x DVD.

Namlook, after calming down some, I decided to call them back and tell them that I wanted to keep the order anyway. They said that was fine so it looks like I will be getting it. After the $100 rebate, it will be $922 and that includes the tax. It might actually be even cheaper because the Staples manager told me to call him tomorrow and he'd credit me back some money for the shipping. So maybe it'll be closer to $880 for everything. That's a great deal for a nice laptop.

Next task: We need to find a source for the cheap USB floppy drives that are free after rebate. There is a mention of them in the thread at fatbillfold, but I think it might be the wrong model.

Just so everyone feels good I configured this laptop on HP's own site with these specs:

1.06 Ghz
512 MB
20 GB HD
8 x DVD
8 cell battery

HP charges $60 for shipping. That's ridiculous too but better than $75.

$1491.99 shipped including tax - $100 rebate = $1391.99

It's about $500 less buying through staples and staples is just the middleman for the transaction. They have HP build these just like you ordered through the Hp website. I wonder how the heck Staples are making money on this deal.

Mine also subtracted only $85 - which is now the savings stated on the website.

In my experience, Staples has always added tax. I'm trying to decided if I feel like arguing that DELIVERY, however, is not taxable in IL. Dunno if it's worth the bother...

Where is everyone buying their external floppy drive?

HP will reimburse up to $49 for the purchase of either Mitsumi, TEAC, or Macally drive.

Has anyone found a good source yet?

Little help!

My email invoice is all screwed up... as posted above. The CSR wanted me to fax the original offer.

According to the CSR, the $50 coupon isnt valid since they didnt issue it to me "directly"... what is the counter arguement for this? Why do I get stuck with all the picky CSRs?

Suggestion?

I got a print out of the original offer and trying to get the 512 MB upgrade as well, PLUS the $50off... some of these CSR are a pain in the BEHIND!

This deal is not dead yet, I just configured a computer for my mom:
1404 (with shipping)
-85
-50
1269
-150
-100
Total: 1019

That's still pretty good, its not hot, but its VERY warm imo. If you can get rid of the shipping it would be hot.

Ok i need some help here guys.........

Staples is trying to charge me $1240 or something , completely ignoring the $230 coupon and the $50 coupon. Ive been on the phone with them 5 times trying to tell them there WAS a $230 coupon on their website and they are acting like i'm crazy.

Please......Anyone that has a copy of that webpage showing the $230 coupon RIGHT in the middle of the page please PM me right away!

Thanks in advance

They charged me the correct amount. You should have received an invoice via e-mail shortly after you placed your order. Are the $230 and $50 coupons not listed on there either? How about on the website in the order tracking section? If not, are you sure you entered the coupons corectly? When I first placed my order the website would not accept the $150 off 512 ram coupon. I had to call and get that adjusted, but the other two coupons worked fine and all the coupons are reflected in my order tracking history on the website.
