Google Maps also runs on many phones with Java.

I find Mobile GMaps to be superior because it supports the GPS abilities of my Samsung A920. I can tell it to find the nearest "XYZ" business near my current GPS location while on the road. Very nice. It's a great program even without the GPS.

Here is a thread on installing it on many Sprint phones.

So I need to order this by tomorrow to take advantage of the free texts promotion, and I think it's time to bite the bullet and get a cell phone.

Any advice on what the best phone in the free/cheap category would be? If it were just a matter of comparing reviews on the phones listed on the sero site, I could do that. But I've heard there are many other phones available but just not listed?

Please help! I'm a cell phone noob

Edit: the Samsung M610 and the Sanyo M1 were both suggested to me, any comments on those?

Wow, I'm glad I went back and read this thread again. I just called and had unlimited text messaging added for free. The entire process took less than five minutes.

A great SERO deal just got even better.

I waited until today to order my phones,

Now I am having problems getting them to transfer/port my existing phone numbers over to 2 new SERO plans.
I talked with 2 ladies so far at the number from the SERO website, 1st lady said no, second lady was nice, she went through the trouble of explaining that even though I was out of contract they couldn't port my numbers because I had existing accounts, and she tried to help, but she ended up directing me to customer care at 888-211-4727, now I am in a 20 minute wait for a representative. ON HOLD

**update after about 20 minutes, talked to lady in customer service, she spoke decent but broken english, she wanted me to talk to sales dept. to get the phones first then switch the lines, I transferred to sales dept., then I explained the plan I wanted to sales dept. with the purchase of the new phones and she said she would have to transfer me to employee purchase department. BACK ON HOLD
Hung up after a menu that took me nowhere

** Update **
Called back to normal *2 number, said "Cancel" got transferred to the "Business account services/cancellation department" (I guess this is retentions?)
Talked to a guy named Rick, ( I have his ID but wont post it here) he was pretty nice, I explained I wanted 2 lines transferred to SERO and keep my number. he said sorry can't do it. I told him help me out, what does he suggest. I was being nice, he was being nice. I told him, "think about it, I am going to have to port my number to another carrier and then port it back just to get on the SERO plan, where is the sense in that." He agreed, said that SERO is supposed to be a plan just to bring in new customers, but obviously people have found a way around that... so I asked him if he could help me out, he said he could give me a similar plan, but it would not be "SERO" I told him thats fine, get me something similar. So... he worked this up,

$29.99 plan with 450 minutes
added extra 100 minutes to make it 550
added unlimited text
added power vision (I wasn't sure, so I confirmed that this was unlimited data for the entire plan, not some 6 month free trial)
Nights and Weekends start at 7pm
Mobile to mobile included
2 mogul phones with $150 instant rebates

He told me I qualify for the $50 service credit, but that he couldn't add that. (Just like other people have posted, retentions apparently has limits now on what they can provide as far as service credits)
He told me to just call back in and ask for the $50 credit
I also had a 22% corporate discount on the old plan for 3 lines, he said that he can work it in but it will not show up as the 22% corporate discount, he will just reduce the amounts somehow so it will be about the same. He said the plan will be right at $30 before taxes and it seems like I actually come out better than the SERO plan.

Also, I had 3 lines total, 2 were out of contract and 1 was in a newer contract (didn't qualify for the $75 credit even) but he switched all 3 lines over to this $30 plan. SO I should pay about $90-$100 which is just under what I pay now, BUT I get more minutes and unlimited text and data which is the main thing I am interested in for email and web.

So now its been about 2 hours jacking around with these CSRs
I ended up using cancellation/retentions department to get a similar deal and I am happy,

I couldn't get the mogul with the $110 service credit, I even asked about how sellers on Ebay could sell the mogul for $99.

When I call back in for the $50 credit I will ask again about the $110 credit for the mogul.

I also read on another forum that the mogul DOES do tethering and there is a way so sprint can't tell its tethered, but I am still trying to find out how....

sorry for the long post, but that was my experience.
I either got really screwed over and wont tell until the bill comes, or I got a good deal.... We will see

You are NOT allowed to port number from an existing account to SERO. Sero can only be done as a new account or as additional lines to an existing account.

You COULD cancel your current account, which free's up your number, and sign up for SERO under a new account and hope you get your old number back.

I personally kept my old account and added a new SERO line. This way I wouldn't have to change my payment options, or go through all that hassle. However, even doing that, there is still the hassle of dealing with a new number and cancelling the old phone number off the account. It isn't done automatically for you.

Leaning toward the Samsung M610. For anyone interested it's not advertised on the site but supposedly it's 79.99 through sero.

Also people on FW are reporting the unlimited texts is extended to 7-17. Not sure about that though.

Edit: Looks like the M610 is out of stock, now the Sanyo M1 looks promising!

If you need to keep your old number, the best way to do so is to port your number first to another cell phone company and then port it back to SERO.

I called retentions/cancellations, and I THINK I got a better deal than the $30 SERO, but I haven't recieved the phone or bill yet, so I can't confirm it until then. But from the conversation I had with the CSR I am happy

It's possible and actually pretty common. I had a family plan w/ two lines and was out of contract. I was set up on two sero lines w/o any new lines... got new phones with the same phone numbers after asking if I could keep my numbers.

People reading this thread might also wanna check out the thread I posted for getting the Mogul for 249.99 too! sweet deal.

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2067187&enterthread=y</end quote></div>

An even better deal - get Mogul for $100! Order Treo 700wx for $199.99 (it retails for $649.99) and end up with a $100 credit to your account, making Mogul only $100.

true, but i haven't tried that so that's why i didn't post it

so umm, here's the continuation of my story of the pain and final retribution of dealing with sprint to get this deal.

Re-read everything I posted above to bring you up to speed.

So, the next day after making the order, I thought I might be able to send an email to ecare and ask politely if my new sero plan can use my old phone number. I stated the guy that signed me up never gave me the number for the Sero line on my account I started, which truthfully he did forget to do, and hoped that he used my old number.

I get an email back the next day...

Thank you for contacting Sprint. I will be happy to assist you regarding plan change.

I noticed that a new line was added to the account by mistake as of June 26, 2007. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused to you. You will be receiving a new handset for the same. I would request you to do not accept the handset and return it back to us.

Further, the old number 210-373-XXXX is still active on the account. Please be assured that you can keep the same number as long as you with to have. To have the plan change, I request you to write back with the plan you wish to have and I will be glad to make the changes for you.

Eagerly waiting for your reply!

Sprint
"Where our customers come first!"

I was first off, very impressed by their use of grammar. *Not* I was also a little bit PO'd at this time. So the next day, I give a call to get this straightened out. I call customer service and tell someone that the recent person I contacted screwed the pooch and canceled the new line I wanted instead of my old line. After dealing another hour on the phone to fix everything I was told, "Sir, you are all taken care off. Unfortunately since the old SERO line was cancelled, reactivating generated a new number and it's..."

I told her thanks and hung up thinking everything was hunky dory.

Well, I didn't need to use my phone the remainder of that night or the next day. I get home Friday after work and a girl I've been talking to emails me asking to go out that night. Of course, I say "Sure" and set a place and time to meet. I said I'd give her a call when I got there.

I show up, and try to make a call to the girl. I get...

"Your connection has been interrupted due to reaching your balance spending limit. Your current balance is $1010.28 and is due immediately to reinstate services. Please hold while I transfer you to someone that can help."

That's right, the person that signed me up someone entered something in completely screwed up! I couldn't make a phone call, and if you are over, you can't get to customer service. Calling *2 only puts you in touch with the collections department, which can only collect a payment from you. GRR!!! I ended up late to my date by an hour because the morons put me on hold trying to transfer me around so much and fix my account. Suffice it to say, I was NOT happy.

After talking for that hour to get it straight, I was told by the collection guy that he had a billing rep fix everything and I can make a phone call. I just told him thanks for ruining my chance at getting lucky tonight.

So, come home today, my mogul is here. I was seriously debating sending everything back and just buying an iphone or something. I thought to myself, I went through all this trouble I might as well take a look at the thing. So I turn it on, and set everything up. After getting my phone working, I decide to check out mysprint.com for my plan/phone info.

I get to the site and notice I have an outstanding credit of $574. I am thinking, that's not right either, but I guess they haven't taken the money for the phone or something. I also notice under my plan details that I don't have unlimited txt turned on either. GRR!!! So I call customer service on *2 again. I get the text turned on and asked on the sly.. so my account shows $574 credit.. can you tell me what the heck is going on?

So the girl looks over my bill and says, "Well, you had lasts month bill, you paid $XX.XX for it on June 24. You received a charge for $424 and a payment for $424. You received a credit for $44, $150, and $380. You have an outstanding credit of $574. You look all set to me."

At this point I'm flabbergasted. I'm hoping beyond hope that this is legit and I don't really have a bill for the 19 months or so. Here's hoping sprint finally made a mistake in my favor for once.

I ordered last Friday on the last day of the unlimited texts, and I got the Moto Q yesterday. Great deal, but this phone freezes all the time. The screen goes blank when idle and I can't wake it up. Gotta send it back, but not sure to get another Q or a different phone. The Treo 700wx seems to have lots of complaints about crashing too.

The Blackberry 8830 is now available for Sprint!! I've been waiting for this phone to make it to Sprint for a couple months now. It's not listed on the sero site, though. I wonder if it's available. Anyone who's in the market for one want to give it a try and report back?

I already have SERO, so what would be the best way to go about getting one of these(for a decent price, I don't want to pay full retail if there's a way around it)??
