I am doing this using my Samsung A920 connected to my laptop! Oh man, what a deal. It's not as fast as my Cox Cable, but when on the road it'll be great. I called and was told it is free and included. The cable came with the A920 and the software is a free download from Sprint!

lol...you are misinformed. it is not included FYI...regardless of what they told you. apparently sprint can now tell the difference between tethering w/ a laptop and regular browsing on the phone. Sprint has an phone-as-modem option for $25 which allows you 40mb of transfer per month when tethering....and it is capped @ $70 (so really its $70 for unlimited transfers). Of course if you do not sign up for the plan, you will be charged per kb if they catch you.

The employees, by the way, couldn't believe the details of the plan. 500 minutes for $30 a month, plus no activation fee (a $36 savings!) and free Power Vision blew them away. That and the free calls to Sprint AND Nextel phones. Plus if I refer somebody I get $25 and they get $25 too.

So, thanks OP! Thanks so much! I'll write back some other time if I can and report on the phone and service.
Sounds good, but how much did you pay for the phone?
The a920 cost me $149 plus tax. I know that's not free, but I really like this phone. The a950 is almost the exact same phone at Verizon, if anything it's a tad nicer. They're getting $199 after rebates at the store. Buy.com has the a950 for $179.99 with a $180 mail-in rebate. So $149 for the a920 is not bad, for me it was definitely worth it.

I though just like you before I called and posted, but, I just pulled up my account again at Sprint.com and they show no data usage even though I used the modem feature 2 times yesterday, and I used the web a number of times. It does show call minutes but no data minutes, so I'm assuming I am not being hit for the data minutes. Maybe because it's Sunday the online numbers aren't completely current. I'll know better later in the week, maybe Friday. For now I think I'm safe, but I won't be at all shocked if I find out I am billed for phone as modem use.

It still comes up as $149.99 for my zip code on Sprint's regular site, not the site for the employee referral plan. The store sold me the phone for the regular signup price, they didn't even look it up for the SERO plan.

I just found this at Sprint's website:

Unlimited Sprint Power VisionSM Access includes:

  • Unlimited Web and Data access (emphasis mine)
    Watch live TV on the go with streaming Live News Channel featuring ABC News Now
    Streaming Radio Channel with Sirius Hits

So I think that the reason the data use is still not showing up on my account is that I'm not billed for it. Time will tell. Once I get my first bill I'll know for sure. Looks like I won't get my first bill till February though.

Sprint is definitely active in my area, but even when the backdoor worked they wouldn't acknowledge that this deal was available

Most likely you are in an affiliate market not Sprint, such as Alamosa PCS.

The Samsung A920 is not available from inphonic.com. The nearest one to it is the A940 which is $219.99

I just found out the same thing after signing up last Friday for the SERO 500. I was finally able to log into my account and saw:

Sprint Fair & Flexible Plan

* Adjustable Anytime Minutes
* $55.99 Minimum Monthly Charge
* AMERICA - ROAMING Included
* Nationwide Long Distance Included
* Unlimited Night & Weekend Mins. Included
* Nights: M-Th 9PM-7AM Wknd: F 9PM-M 7AM
* Caller ID, Call Waiting
* Three-way Calling
* Voicemail

No Sprint for me and this has to be the worst customer service I have ever dealt with. Took 4 hours over two days to find this out.

Yep, pretty much all of non-metropolitan areas of Texas are covered by Alamosa PCS as well as much much more of the US. I used to work there up until I moved in August. This sucks for me as well since I cant get in on the deal either.

To take advantage of the free watching live tv and streaming radio do you have to get a "multimedia" phone?

If you can get to a Sprint store like I did I would bet they'll let you get one. The a900 is similar too, but it does not accept memory cards.

OMG! In the last 24 hours I have spoken to 13 people at Sprint and gone into 2 Sprint stores. NOBODY will sell me that deal over the phone or in person. Person #13 seemed to have more of a clue than any of the rest and said that the correct way to get this offer is to have the Sprint employee go into the IConnect system on their Intranet and setup the referral, that generates an email to you with the needed information.

He did say that the sprint.com/sero site should work if don't have the actual referral email, but do have the employee's email address. When I mentioned that they did not have the phone I wanted (the A920), he downplayed it by basically saying "oh well, you're at least getting the discounted plan".

To further complicate it, I'm trying to port my existing Nextel number to the new account. He suggested buying the phone from Inphonic, then calling Sprint to have them port my (still active) Nextel number to my new account.

The offer is a great deal, but I'm 13 CSR's and 4 hours of effort into this, and don't feel any closer. Not sure it's worth it.

Anyone have suggestions before I just give up and shut off my Nextel phone altogether?

When I went I told the Sprint store manager that if she couldn't set me up I'd simply go to Verizon because I wanted that phone, and the Verizon a950 is pretty much the same as the a920. I showed her my current Verizon slider to make my point. She was heppy to bring me aboard. I went to the Sprint store in North Attleboro, MA. It's a B&M store, not a booth in a mall or BestBuy. She told me she was going to show the other emplyees how to do it should anybody else show up. Maybe you could call that store? Of course right now the a920 is hard to get. Sprint only started selling them December 6th and I was told they are selling very fast at all locations.

Maybe you could sign up for another phone that supports Power Vision and send it back for the a920, or go to a store and do an exchange?

Yes... I know. I left just in the nick of time. Alamosa is the only affiliate that is actually profitable enough to buy. Sucks for all of my co-workers though.

LOL, when your prized US Cellular makes it to Atlanta, drop me a line. Sprint SERO is the best deal going in most areas right now. Oh yeah, phone was free.

I got my phone today but they didn't include the free picture mail in the package like I selected. Anyone else have that problem?

Edit: Called about the free upgrade with picture mail and they're giving me a bunch of crap asking how I got to that page. I explained that I was told about it from an employee but they are saying they have no access to it so they can not offer it. I'm just going to cancel and go back to my old service at T-Mobile and just get beat the $35 non-refundable activation fee. Not only that I've called costumer service three times and every single time I get someone who can barely speak understandable English.

Edit #2: I told the lady on the phone to go to http://www.sprint.com/sero and she says she still can not access it, which just shows she's retarded becuase I did it ten times to make sure . I'm being transferred to a superviser now.

Edit #3: Got transferred to a superviser and they still do not understand that it's NOT AN EMPLOYEE ACCOUNT BUT A EMPLOYEE REFERAL ACCOUNT.

Edit #4: Finally got them to give me what they were supposed to after an hour or talking.

Yes, but if you do it too much under this plan, you will risk getting caught and getting a letter telling you to stop or be forced to upgrade to the Phone as a Modem plan.

The PPC-6700 is the only exception because it falls under older "tethering" rules. So you can hook it up to a laptop via Bluetooth or USB and surf to your heart's content.

Thanks for the info, didn't know that about the 6700 but does it applies to the old GF vision plan and/or the new Power Vision plan as well?

Has anyone been able to successfully do an ESN swap and keep their GF vision plan by simply refusing the "upgrade"?

edit: could use a referal email for a friend if anyone has one available, thanks!

How can I get the Treo 650 or the ppc 6700?
They do not show up on the sero website.

Do I have to go to a sprint store to get one of these two phones?

Yes, people have done an ESN swap successfully without losing their GF'd Vision. Call and ask for an ESN swap. If they even so much as mention the words Power Vision Package, hang up and call again.

I want to avoid that, so I got a Power Vision (EVDO) capable phone to start my new contract on this SERO plan.
