Such an awesome value, but I decided against ordering this. I knew from the beginning that I was looking for a mid-size notebook, not an ultralight or a desktop replacement. As attractive as this was, I thought I woulda been getting more than I wanted. I ordered an IBM T22 off their ebay store instead. Yeah, it was more expensive than the Inspiron 8100, but ohwell.

Wish this coulda been an Inspiron 4100 or a Latitude...

My friend's looking for a lappie, so I sent his this link, and he was wondering (I've never bought a laptop through dell) if you can customize the laptop and still get the rebate, and he's just a college student, is he still able to order through small-business?

Thanks guys.

Yes you can still customize the laptop and get the $300 rebate as long as you carefully read the rebate rules.

Anyone can order from Small Business, just think of a business name, as easy as that.

How long is this deal good for?
It doesn't matter. There will always be a better laptop deal. The longer you wait, the cheaper and more powerful the laptops get. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do about it. Rossman, you should just buy a laptop and then stop wasting time tracking laptop deals. This is time you never get back ;-)

It's a good thing it expires in two days, not enough time for me to get through an AmEx application to get the extra off. Thus, I can barely resist spending the money on a new lappie... I'll have to wait on the next hot deal.

In any case, be very careful before doing the 5% rebate thing. From the AmEx website, they mention the following Dell-Specifiic "EveryDay Savings" program (5% off) limitation:

The Everyday Savings discount is not combinable with any other Dell offer, promotion, or discount and does not apply to lease payments, taxes, or shipping.

To me, using the 5% off AMEX discount in conjunction with the $300 off rebate is running a risk ( albeit small ) that Dell will decide to enforce that limitation and either nerf your 5% or the $300 rebate.

That estimated ship date is always way longer than reality. I ordered on April 16th, said it would ship May 6. It actually shipped on April 18th... Normally your lappy will ship 2-3 business days after ordering.

It's going to be an agonizing decision.

I decided not to buy this mainly because 1) I don't need a desktop replacement I want a Dell Inspiron 4100 not an 8100 and 2) I'm concerned about the super high resolution of the UXGA display, although you can scale the fonts/text down it just isn't the same.

Phew, just saved myself $1,300.

Now we wait for the next deal.

If you're a klutz then yes. If I had a laptop I would be careful not to drop it or spill fluids on it so the complete care would be a total waste of money. I'd invest that money into more RAM (256MB for $90 from Crucial.com), a good case ($50), or some sort of security cable.

The best part of this deal is you get the 3 year mail-in warranty for the SAME PRICE as the 1 year mail-in warranty.

I've had serious issues with Dell's customer care. I know that they are highly rated and everything but my monitor fried after a week, and they refused to send me a new one or send someone out for two months. Now that sucks. My sony died and they sent me a new monitor the same day. I spilled crap on my sony lappy and they sent me a new motherboard. I think the secret is don't lie. Just tell them that you are an idiot. They like to laugh at people as well. Wait for another deal to come along. The 8100 is too dang heavy as well.

What is the battery life on one of these Dell 8100's?
Am I the only one here that thinks 8-9 lbs is not heavy? If it was around 20lbs then I would say it was too heavy to carry around.

On a 15" screen UXGA is the way to go. You can use large fonts / icons, and your right it isn't the same- It's MUCH better! There's no loss of sharpness when using large fonts. The UXGA with large fonts blows away any other laptop screen out there. I'm typing on my UXGA screen now and it's so bright, and sharp.... Now with a 14" screen on a 4100 I wouldn't do UXGA.. SXGA would be the screen to get.

I don't find the 8100 that heavy. I don't even notice it. The 4100 is more portable but I have to tell you the 15" screen is really nice to have. Battery life is 2.5 to 2.75 hours..

I called Dell to see if I can add a floppy and the girl told me she could with the following configuration only:

upgraded to 64MB 4X AGP ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 [would cost $99 online config screen]
upgraded to 40GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive [would cost $199 online config screen]

Now is this still a hot deal for $1577 (already includes the $50 off) - $300 MIR = $1277 before tax and free S&H?

That's $178 more for upgrading the video card, more hard drive and floppy . . .

Sobe - Yes that's still a very good deal but not the BEST deal possible. The BEST deal possible is if you can order online saving 5% from Amex and another 2% from eBates. However if you order online you don't get a floppy but you do SAVE an additional $109 off ($1577 - 5% Amex - 2% eBates).

Is removing the floppy worth a $109 savings to you?

Nice idea, thanks!

Here's the floppy but it doesn't mention the 8100?

They have changed the price to $1,149. However, now you get the 64MB 4X AGP ATI Mobility Radeon 7500, instead of the 16 MB NVIDIA GEFORCE2 GO. Also, the instant rebate is now $100 rather than $50.

I think this is a better deal, if you were planning to get the 64 MB video card. Is $50 extra a good price for the 64 MB video card? I'm thinking of changing my order and getting the 64 MB card.

Also, there are two free software packages--which you have to check to get it. The software are:

1) Digital Photography: Dell Picture Studio,Image Expert 2000 Standard Edition
2) Digital Music: Dell Jukebox powered by MusicMatch 6.0 for XP

Regarding the video card, I think you're getting a better deal now compared to before. Correct me if I'm wrong but the 16 to 64 upgrade was $99 before and now it's only $50? There's gotta be a catch, or you just saved $49.

My wife's Dell Dimension 4300 has the "Dell Picture Studio,Image Expert 2000 Standard Edition" software and it's nice for digital photo's.

im glad they upgraded the video card
i think its cheaper than originally with the upgrade
when they send the rebate does it have to be to a company or to an individual

Since this deal expires today, probably around 11:00 PM CT I only have 9 hours 17 minutes to order this or pass on it, hmmn.

I've never done a Dell Small Business rebate but I would think it can be an individual with a business name?
