Very good deal for a loaded laptop. Dell Small Business the Inspiron 8100 Notebook with mobile Pentium III 1.0GHz-M, 15in UltraXGA, DVD, 256MB, 20GB, Modem for $1398 - $300 rebate = $1098 shipped. You may want to upgrade to 10/100 + 56K Capable V.90 NIC/Modem, Internal Mini-PCI for $30 more.

Save extra 5% off (stackable with regular $ off promotions such as this) at Dell Small Business if you have a amex business gold card. first year annual fee waived.

Update1: thanks to Justus, you can choose "3Yr Ltd. Warranty- 3Yrs Mail-In Service + Lifetime Phone Support" for free!
Update2: even hotter - Now you can get 64MB 4X AGP ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 video card with same spec otherwise (was a 16MB video card) for $1149 after rebate, which is only $49 extra. normally same upgrade cost $99.
Update3: The dell inspiron 8100 laptop deal is still valid. it's just hidden from their website. however, there is no free shipping now, and ground shipping is $35. you may use your Fedex account to save.
Update4: Looks like now you have to call dell to order: . http://www.dell.com/us/en/bsd/offers/specials_3x_inspn_8100_mcrec.htm

Default is a 1 year warranty, but no charge added if you change to 3 year mail-in service. Go figure.

Argh temptation, I'm finally considering actually ordering this but have to ask myself:

How often will I really use it?

Just how big/heavy is this in practical terms, I'll be using it 90% at home surfing the net from different rooms.

How do I afford a $1,100 toy that I cannot afford?

What if there are clearance Hot Deals on the i4100, if/when the new i4200 replacement comes along? The i4100 is perfect for me, not super lightweight but not a heavy desktop replacement like this.

How do I justify this purchase with the wifey?

The total cost will be around $1500 when I factor in the additional RAM from Crucial, the WiFi stuff, might get an extended warranty.

Someone stop me.

Yeah Rossman, I'm tired of all this indecision. You should have jumped on several of the deals by now How light of a laptop are you looking for? I jumped on the HP ZT1000 deal from Staples a few months ago, and it was only 5.4 pounds(I think that's with weight saver in place of DVD ROM).

What does this lappy weigh?

Rossman,

The best deals I found on laptops are from start-ups going out of business. I was never able to justify the cost of a lappy until I got a few of them from the failing start-up I was working for. I bought 5 of them, sold one to my dad, one to my sister in-law and two on ebay. I made enough money on the two from ebay that I was able to upgrade my personal one.

If you really want one, I would recommend looking for friends or family who work for start-ups that are not well positioned to make it.

lol RossMan. I understand your pain and am in the same boat. I have been waiting for the i4100 to drop to the sweet spot of under ~1200 for

14.1 xga (anything higher gets blurry in games for me)
32mb gf2
30gig hd
cdrw
128mb ram (will get stick of 512 from crucial)

i've been watching and waiting and watching and waiting and agonizing over every single 8100 deal that came by in the past several months. I also jumped onboard for the $700 toshiba 1005-157 but changed my mind and cancelled it.

for a little more
the compaq 2805 at best buy for 1750-200 in rebates = $1550 is not bad either
32mb radeon
14.1xga
cdrw
20gig
256mb ram

if the compaq was 200 cheaper i would jump on it
or if they gateway 450xl was 100 cheaper and supported a gig of ram..

argh the agony of waiting...

You nailed it, it's nothing but waiting and agonizing.

Perhaps for motivation not to order this I should look at my cc bills

I've been drooling over these laptop threads since last year. They still don't make the model I want yet.

I think what I'm looking for is something like the C400, but with at least a 16MB Radeon, instead of that shared video memory garbage.

Just to point out, an upgrade to 512 MB ram is only $120. I realize that upgrading through Crucial is cheaper, but to avoid hassle, that is a really good price for ram from Dell. One though drawback is that it does not come with the floppy drive and I do not think it comes with the s-video cable.

What I find really appealing about this deal/laptop is:

P3 1GHz, plenty of power for me plus I heard the CPU runs pretty cool.
No extra charge for 3 year mail-in warranty, nice peace of mind for the same price as 1 year.
Upgrade RAM to 512MB is only an extra $120, no hassle of ordering from Crucial and installing yourself.

OK. Are you able to configure the system discussed in *this* deal with a floppy drive? I was not able to.

I ordered a couple of 8100s a couple weeks ago that came with the modular floppy drive standard, but this one doesn't appear to offer it at all.

dshodson,

When you customize the notebook, look for waranty option. the default is 1-year warrany, you should
change it to the one for 3-year without additional cost.

I think dell may pull the free 3-yr warranty . it's not advertised.
