I want to thank you guys for letting me on this deal. For the ones asking about the *Floppy Drive, yes it is NOT included. I had to call to get the following.

8100 - 1Ghz - 256mb ram - Geforce Go2 16mb - DVD - Floppy - UXGA (1600x1200) - NIC 56k Modem f- 3yr warranty for $1155 after 300 rebate, one hell of a deal, considering the 8200s that go for $2,300 don't come with (1600x1200).

Thanks guys,
Dan

I feel your pain Rossman.
So tempted, but just can't justify it.
I think if I can find a deal on the Sony SRX77c then I could justify it as being too cool to pass up.

I'm ready to place an order tomorrow morning but was wondering if anyone has had good/bad experiences with Dell's rebates.

I hope the free 3 year warranty doesn't disappear/gets fixed by tomorrow.

How much is the modular floppy drive? I suppose I will need to call in order to get the floppy, because I can't find the modular floppy on their site anywhere.

Ack, didn't mean to hit reply so fast.

Good deal, but still can't beat what I've picked up. Compaq 700 from Costco. Very nice sleek silver casing (and not the standard black square box). Comes with:

1.2 Ghz Duron
256 Meg Ram
30 Gig HD
8X DVD Drive
Modem and 10/100 network port built in
16meg S3 Video card which runs my 3D games just fine.
Loaded with WinXP

$1199

My only wish is that they offered this killer package with CDRW. Oww, well.

I really don't want to phone in my order since I won't get the same deal as ordering online (long story).

Why would I need a modular floppy?

What if the laptop crashes and I need to bootup from CD, can I do that from the DVD?

Concerning the quality of DELL rebates, I bought three desktops in a deal at end of March and yesterday receivced the first two $100 rebates in the mail. That is about six weeks for rebates to come through, very quick in my experience.

Depending on the CD, yeah it should work fine. For example, I know that Windows XP install discs are bootable.

That doesn't seem to work. I have called half a dozen reps at Dell. I told them that I want the 10/100 NIC/56K modem combo unit instead of the 56K modem alone, which I got with the Inspiron 8100. Each time I started by telling them that I am considering returning the system, if I could not swap out the unit...each time, they rejected it, and offered me nothing. Guess I'll just return it anyway.

Has the quality of the buttons on the dell lappys improved? In all the dell lappys I've used, the 4 "mouse" buttons (2 above and 2 below the touchpad) are very stiff. I use the trackpoint (the ball pointer thingy), and click the buttons with my thumbs. After clicking on these stiff buttons several times, my thumbs are in pain!

Are these buttons adjustable? This is the primary reason why I've held off on these dell deals and still using my old thinkpad ... can't afford a new thinkpad though

I've also seen a couple inspirons and latitudes with squeaky & dead keys on the keyboard.

My buttons dont seem stiff at all really... In fact the ones under the touchpad seem VERY easy to press...

My keyboard is relatively silent as well, granted ive only had this lappy for 2 weeks...

I have an antique Dell Latitude CPX ( 400 Mhz Celeron ), and have loaded, reloaded, and done pretty much everything without a floppy drive. I finally found one it could use, but haven't ever used it yet.

As long as you're not going to:

1) Want to install Windows 95/98
2) Want to install something that requires a transfer to floppy

I see no reason to worry about the (lack of a) floppy drive. Sometimes you have to be a bit creative to move files around, but overall not a problem.

The DVD drive should behave just like a CDROM. And, if you're that worried about the floppy, you should be able to go to the Software and Peripherals site and buy one separately ( right now they have some coupons as well ).

--- OTOH, I'm waiting for "just the right deal" too, and this one is almost, but not quite, the right deal for me. So, good luck agonizing over your decision!

nah laptops must be run at their native res, or else everything looks blurry. You can up up the size of icons and fonts tho. For me, I opted for SXGA because I didn't want everything to look TOO small. I jumped the on the 8100 deal from dell Home btw. It's great. Of all the deals for 8100 in the past month, I think they are all basically the same. Dell has promos giving you "free" stuff, but basically you're paying for it. I got "free" ram upgrade and "free" hd upgrade. Anyways, same systems config to about the same price under every deal, taking into account tax from SB, shipping from Home. My 2 cents =P
