Cannot backup protected discs (SaveDisc v2.x)

does this mean i cant back up dvd movies that i purchase that have copy protection, or is there a way around this?

after all, one copy for personal use is legal, isnt it?

If you could come up with another $50 or so you could possibly use a $30 off $150 coupon that you could find elsewhere and reduce the price a little. OfficeMax has had this same drive recently for $79.99 after rebates.

Apparently Office Depot has this on sale this week for $99.88 after a $30 I/O MIR and an OD $20 MIR. Not sure if they would pricematch Staple's out the door price, but if you could and still get the rebates that would be $50. And if you happened to have one of OD printed $15 off $100 coupons that they mailed out recently that would be $35. You would have to add something to get over $100. The way prices on DVD burners have been falling, I'm holding out until they are FAR.

Edit: Oops, forgot the link. Office Depot I/O Magic 8X DVD

This is from the customer service section of Office Depot's low price guarantee.

"When coupons or rebates are offered, the price guarantee amount will be based on the net price after these deductions are made."

Definitely a YMMV on this.

I just called and tried this. I got as far as matching the $129.94 shown online but the CSR at OD claimed
she couldn't see the added code for $30 off when checking out. After the OD rebates for $50 the final
price would of been $80. So I decide to get it online at Staples and avoid the rebates using a 30/150
Staple code. By then the drive was OOS online. Think I'll just wait for next weeks deals.

Maybe it would be easier to bring one of Staple's flyers to the OD store. It should show the final price after IR. Then they could call to verify that Staple's has it in stock.

I think Staples has it showing as OOS because they make a mistake and listed the drive price as $129.99 before you add the $50 off instant savings code and the code isn't working because the total is less than $150. So once they fix the price it should show that it's in stock.
If you are lucky you may be able to order by phone and talk a clueless CSR into selling you the drive for $79.99 after the $50 off instant savings by telling them the $50 off instant savings isn't working on line.

I just picked one up at B&M. It's a BTC.

For those of you asking you can tell by the model number that's shown on the label on top of the burner. BTC = model# 1008IM.

The info on the box says "IDVDRW8D".

UPC code is "8 88069 00884 6" -- don't know it maybe it's different for the BTC ones.

The top of the drive reads "DD0401".

Curiously, it doesn't read in the BIOS as an Optorite, but as a "GENERIC DVD RW 8XMax" -- and Nero shows no HD-BURN support. Maybe I have to install the Optorite firmware on the drive?

Hope this helps.

Thanks but what's the serial number? The model number, the UPC code and all that is generic to both drives. If you look on the back of the box though, you'll see a little sticker along the bottom. That should be specific to each type of drive. It has the serial number on it.

Mine was a BTC too here in Birmngham. I'd have been fine with either the Optorite or the BTC so long as it works. I'm not going to use the HD Burn feature most likely anyway. Good non-rebate deal.

No guarantee that this is correct but there is a sticker on the box that shows FW. If it's
F: 0054 it supposedly is a BTC drive. Not sure what it will have if it is an Optorite. I just visited my local Office Depot and they were all F: 0054. Maybe those of you who have purchased this can post this information and what drive you got.

Got this info from another web site, but it sounds like it should be correct:

The boxes that contain the BTC drives are NOT shrink wrapped, and have a small sticker on the back. On this sticker there is the entry: F:0054, this is the firmware version.
The boxes that were shrink wrapped contained the Optorite DD401 Drives. There was NO sticker on the outside of the box, the rear design on the box was also different, showing the software packages included.
