Well, my local OM doesn't have any other drive other than Khypermedia. No PD or IO magic. But i already have my Benq, and i'm happy with it.

I don't get it..the ad clearly states 8X+ drive is on sale. Where does it say +/- ? What makes anyone think it is anything more than the Khypermedia drive ?

There's three SKU's listed below the drive. I imagine they're for the Kyhpermedia/IOMagic/PD drives.

And staples doesn't PM the price after rebate .

well..was in OM last night picked up a MicroAdvantage 4x(BTC1004) to see if it would be suitable for a build..plays DVDs fine..burns DVD+Rs ok @4x..but it just did an unforgivable..1st +R coaster in my 800A(had even lowered the burn speed to 4x) because the BTC just..stopped reading the DVD..back it goes Same DVD in my LTD163D(in a USB 2.0 enclosure ) keeps the buffers above 90+% and on the fly writing @ 8x is ..sweet ..BTC is not on my list as of now for quality drives. Would like to get another Khypermedia 8x DVD+RW(BenQ 800A) <edit> 2 blanks burnt successfully ..

Sunny Florida.

I see it in the same place in the ads for LA, Chicago, Dallas, Memphis, NJ, Seattle and Omaha.

The last one they had a few weeks ago, I had them hold me the last 8X burner.
It was a Lite-On 801 or 811 but it was beige.

I hope to get a Lite-On 811S, but Black this time.

The PD were being sub'ed a few weeks ago. They were three different drives packaged by PD found during that week. Serial numbers starting with "P" were BTC1008, Serial numbers starting with "4" were Lite-on. There were two different version of Lite-on (I think they were the 811S and the 851S).

The previous thread had a theory on serial numbers that distinquished between the two Lite-on models if that makes a difference to you. I picked up a couple of 811S (one pricematched at Staples) and have been very pleased with the performance.

No coasters on Imation +R 4X media burning at 8X. Additional benefit was the booktype utility provided at Lite-on site to force DVD-ROM booktype. This made readable DVDs for my older Panasonic A120 (ValueAmerica deal) and my Toshiba 619? DVD/Home Theatre combo (another deal picked up here many many moons ago) that had refused all burned DVDs before.

Serial numbers and other pertinent info can be found in this thread ===>PD Serial Numbers and Links

So I went to pre-buy one of these.. all they had was Khypermedia - which to me is probably just fine.

How can i tell if its a Cyberdrive or BenQ w/o Opening?

At this point i may keep it anyway. The manager adjusted the price in advance and rang it up at 109+tax, i'll take it in on Sunday to get the rebate stuff..

The 8x Pacific Digital U-30201 does not use rebadged NEC drives.

No ad for state college, PA? I'm wondering whether OM at state college is closing.
Was shot down for CDRW as of OOS even though I confirmed before heading to the store.
Oh, well.

Find a city near you that has the ad, then print page showing the 69.99 drive ad, take that to your store and ask the manager to PM the price of the other OM store.
