Wow... this flash technology is getting awesome. Now not only can it change the internal configuration of the drive hardware itself but can also change the bezel color!! Is this a Lite-On exclusive?

Lucky guy, I can't find any but BTC's. I guess Lite-on doesn't want me for an owner

Have you tried placing a order by phone for a Pacific Digital drive?

What are the odds that Officemax sends me a Liteon if I place the order through phone? I'm sure I'll get a BTC.

Bought some CDRs, and a Ptouch tape.... so they got some business.

Sounds they also gave you the business :|

The item pictured and the description for the item are for an 8x drive. BUT, there are 3 sku's listed, of which two are for 8x +- drives. They just told you about the Khypermedia drive and not the others. Have them punch in the sku's and show them your receipt and let them know that they didn't really help you when you were there the first time.

No. While I could order a PD that way, it's highly probable I wouldn't be shipped one of the Lite-On oem's. A chance yes, but not likely. I'd have better luck finding a supply truck at the loading dock and asking if they could find one for me.

I bought the Kyper + drive, and a stack of Memorex + media(25 for $30), loaded the packaged oem Nero Express, dl'd dvdshrink. "backedup" 4 dvds without a hitch

What reason would I have for wanting/needing the "-" if I can burn fine on + media, and it plays in all my players but my old Value America Toshiba?

I would guess it's 60/40 that you would get a LiteOn, if you don't you can always return it to your local OM store.

Ya, that's what I did as well (buy over the phone & check whether I got the correct Liteon version once it's delivered). Gotta grab the rebate forms myself (either in the store or on the website, assuming I can find it).

Can't hurt to try (just return it to a B&M store if I don't want it).

the returned drive i got (i'm not even sure if it was the drive that was supposed to be in the box, since the foam holder was too short by an inch on one side) was a lite-on 851. the serial number was 43**, which is supposed to be an 811. anyway, pulled out my cdrw, checked the jumpers and switched the dvdrw to slave, to match the cdrw. put the drive in, thing wouldn't boot. got to detecting ide drives and it would hang. so i switched it to master, set my dvd to slave, and it booted just fine. copied a movie with dvd shrink and burned a richohjpn +4x just fine. i'll have to get some more dvds this afternoon.

LiteOn DVD drives are shorter than other MFG's drives. If you had got a BTC drive was in the box it would fit in foam holder.

Anyone know what a 4284 prefix in the serial number would be? I asked the manager at the local store to bring one out and that is the number that was on the box. My sister wants a Lite-On drive, but the one she bought where she lives was a BTC (P prefix serial number). Is that drive really inferior to the Lite On if that is all she can get at the sale price? She is not sure whether to return it and all I could tell her is what I read here. Help me out??

That should be a Lite-On if it does not start with P or 41Dxxx
Now not sure if it will be a 851S or 811S
The one I got had a serial starting with 48 and was a 811S

From an earlier post on this thread:
Pacific Digital U-30201 - SKU #20670401
Serial number starts with: 4813 = Lite-On 851 Black
Serial number starts with: 4823 = Lite-On 811 White
Serial number starts with: 43** = Lite-On 811
Serial number starts with: P ** = BTC DRW1008IM
Serial number starts with: 41D6H7432XX = NEC

Thanks. I have seen a couple of lists of serial numbers and I would assume that the one I questioned would be one of the Lite-On models, but that number had not been mentioned before. What about the BTC brand? Is there a definite problem with that manufacturer?

copied from FW:

Pacific Digital U-30201 - SKU #20670401
Serial number starts with: 4813 = Lite-On 851 Black
Serial number starts with: 4823 = Lite-On 811 White
Serial number starts with: 43** = Lite-On 811
Serial number starts with: P ** = BTC DRW1008IM
Serial number starts with: 41D6H7432XX = NEC (ND-2500A?)
(Thanks to CD Freaks for this list)

The basic rule is that lite-ons have a 12 digit, all numbers serial number. The BTC has a serial number that starts with P.

Any more information on the NEC 2500A? I was at the local OM today and got one that has serial that starts with a 41xxxxxxxxxxxxx like the example above. I haven't had time to open it yet and want to make sure it's an NEC before I do.
No more info than already mentioned. If the box you have has numbers AND letters in the serial #, then it looks like you got an NEC. If the serial is ALL NUMBERS, then its a Lite-on. If the serial starts with "P", then its a BTC.

Anyones got the PD drive? What is all suppose it comes with? I did not get any blank Media. I got the drive, manual, Power DVD, and My DVD, sound cable, screws and that's it. Is that right? Nothing mentioned on PD website.

Quick question:

If I'm looking for a drive primarily for DVD+R burning, wouldn't the KHypermedia (Cyberdrive) be a better choice than the Lite-On? It got a much more favorable review at CDRInfo, and people report that it burns more 4X media at 8X than the Lite-On does.

What about a blank DVD media disk, and the Sonic Record Now software? How many disks of software is the drive suppose to come with? What about the UPC? Does it looks like some one printed with a cheap inkjet printer on an Avery label?

Thanks.

Went to the OM in Irvine, CA earlier today (around 1:00) and got a Pacific Digital. And guess what...it's a Lite On, don't know if they have anymore, but I figured I'd let you all know. Also, if you call and ask them if they have it in stock and check a price, they will tell you $199.99. But it does ring up at $119.99-$50 rebate.
