that means I've got to gas around at $2+/gallon since there's a confirmed OC siteing.

btw... has anyone holding a raincheck on this item for $69.99 been able to pick one up for that price?

what it comes down to is @ $70ish after MIR ..very nice drives..didn't have any issues with the BTC1008IM drive I placed with my mom but the BTC1004..it did suck..I admit I do like the Benq DW800A as the one I have has been on a burning spree with me have done over 100 Arita(RicohJPN01) 4x rated @8x..only coaster was with that BTC1004 doing a 4x on the fly burn(yes..ratcheted the 800A down) with it as the source drive using USB 2.0..it stopped(the BTC1004)..just plain stopped..placed my LTD163 up on USB 2.0 with same disc ..8x on the fly..If I need any -R burnt..I'll use my Pioneer A05

From an earlier post on this thread:
Pacific Digital U-30201 - SKU #20670401
Serial number starts with: 4813 = Lite-On 851 Black
Serial number starts with: 4823 = Lite-On 811 White
Serial number starts with: 43** = Lite-On 811
Serial number starts with: P ** = BTC DRW1008IM
Serial number starts with: 41D6H7432XX = NEC

4813 can be a White Lite-On 851

mine was unopened, but seemed too short for the foam inserts as someone else alluded earlier

Pacific Digital U-30201 - SKU #20670401

(Thanks to CD Freaks for this list)

The basic rule is that lite-ons have a 12 digit, all numbers serial number. The BTC has a serial number that starts with P.

Any more information on the NEC 2500A? I was at the local OM today and got one that has serial that starts with a 41xxxxxxxxxxxxx like the example above. I haven't had time to open it yet and want to make sure it's an NEC before I do.
No more info than already mentioned. If the box you have has numbers AND letters in the serial #, then it looks like you got an NEC. If the serial is ALL NUMBERS, then its a Lite-on. If the serial starts with "P", then its a BTC.
I have never heard anyone say that them got a NEC 2500A drive in a Pacific Digital box so that infomation has not been verified, remember NEC 2500A is a 8x/8x drive not a 8x/4x drive.

BTY: You can still return the the drive even if you open the box.

Seems like the key 1st step is finding an OM that has PDs for sale. None of the Khyphermedias are LiteOns.

Mine gets exchanged in Palatine, IL tomorrow afternoon. They have the PDs there.

Are the serial #s on the bottom of the box or something? This K-media one I got was shrink-wrapped on the outside of the box so seeing the physical drive was an impossibility.

Got the rebadged PD / NEC 2500A. Has S/N 41AXXXXXXXXX. Originally had the rebadged IOMagic/BTC drive. Seemed OK but backups would not play on all my DVD players. This PD/NEC 2500A works perfectly. MY OM had 13 on Sunday & 0 yesterday.

Is there a link or can ayone recommend +/- 4x media that will burn @8X w/ this drive?

Bastidges...

When to my local OM & asked for the DVD burners on sale this week, "We only have Khypermedia". Then as a goof I call back that same store & ask for inventory. I use the Pacific Digital-specific item #20678401, "Sure, we have 35 instock"...

Grrrr...don't let 'em fool ya guys. Bet a # of stores are holding out the PD in the stockroom for Subs. Ask for inventory on the item # above as an absolute verification.

May not help everyone, but worth a try.

I've posted a review of the NEC 2500A at the start of this thread.

I have a lite-on 811s and the cyberdrive. The cyberdrive burns ricoh 4x +R disks at 8x with much lower error rates than the lite-on does. Both drives can burn this media at 8x, but the cyberdrive does it better. This cyberdrive beats the lite-on 811s IMO. As far as different brands of media, I cannot speak. I only have ricoh 4x on hand.

I just opened the PD drive that I bought yesterday and it's an NEC 2500A. The serial starts with "41GCHxxxxxxxx". I'm happy about what I got. When I bought it last night I was not really paying attention to the entire series of numbers and just wanted something that started with the number 4. When I got into my car and saw the numbers I thought this may have been another BTC in a different sequence of numbers. Came home and read that some had gotten drives with numbers and letters in the serial that turned out to be NEC drives. Now I know myself that's true.

I was going back to get another in the hope of getting a Lite-On 851 because of the bit setting feature. Now, I'm beginning to wonder if I should try for another NEC instead.

I have a Cyberdrive too; awesome drive; burns my Memorex media (CMC F01) at 8X. It also burns RICOHJPN01 at 8X, and I've heard of 8X compatibility with a few other 4X medias as well.

DVD+R is the way to go for high-quality movie backups.

That's what it comes with.

What about a blank DVD media disk, and the Sonic Record Now software? How many disks of software is the drive suppose to come with? What about the UPC? Does it looks like some one printed with a cheap inkjet printer on an Avery label?

Thanks.

It did not come with any blank dvd recorable disc, the "my DVD" is by Sonic so I guess that's the "sonic" software you were looking for. and yes the UPC look like something printed from a cheap inkjek. There's also a green registration form. I check out 4 drives and they all came with the same stuff. So what you have is what you're suppose to get.

Is this the new OM running DVD drive sales for weeks at a time? When they first had the KHypermedia drives on sale I think they were at $69.99 after MIR two or three weeks in row. Now with the same drives and the PacDigitals, this coming Sunday it will be a second week running same deal, with the exception that the instant and MIR rebates are different amounts. Have to say I don't mind these OM sales at all. Now only if they can get their rebates in order!

I bought that AND the Lite-On 851.
No problems with the Lite-On.

Using the Memorex + media that was on sale at OM; 25 for $29

Serial numbers beginning with 4787 appear to be 811's (at least mine was).

If anyone is having issues with the KHypermedia drive freezing their system, it's a known issue with the Nforce IDE drivers. Uninstall the Nforce IDE drivers only, and your system will default to the WinXP IDE drivers (which work just as well) and it won't freeze up anymore.

It took me 4 phone calls, but I was able to get one by calling for online order, getting them to accept my $25 off $100 coupon, and got a Pacific Digital for $50.00 after rebate. Now I just have to wait and see which one I get....

Called OfficeMax in White Plains, NY to ask about PD 8x drive. It took them a while to find them in their own damn store!! Finally after 5 minutes they realized that they had 12 of them. I went in to buy it and haggeled with them for another 10 minutes to find it again!!! finally went in the back and got it for me. My serial starts with 42935XXXXXXX Of course it turned out to be a Lite-On LDW 851S I flashed it to the newest firmware burned a -RW video and worked great. The drive is a short drive, all good though Any reason to check my other officemax for the NEC?? BTW The damn Sonic MYDVD software version 4.5.2 that it came with wouldn't work after install. Crashes when I run it. What the heck is up with that?? OH also, the PD is $199.99 with $80 IR and $50 MIR --> $70 total

Are you by chance anywhere near southern california in the vicinity of Orange County? If so, which OM store did you buy your burner from?

Thanks
