Me again.

Could someone explain the options in the START/CONTROL PANEL/PERFORMANCE/POWER OPTIONS/ADVANCED
page? These are for AUTOMATIC/DISABLE for or disabling the CPU Power Management and PCI Bus, and for the CDROM Speed -- NORMAL/HIGH/SILENT.

I use the machine mostly on wall power, but often enough on battery. My machine shows speed as 1.2 GHz now as I plugged into wall. Earlier, also with it plugged in, I think it was running at 800 MHz.

And what is the deal with the conversion of the file system? I booted the first time, looked around, then rebooted and it automatically said it was changing my file sys from Fat32 to NTFS (NFST? NSFT? LSMFT?)

Thanks for the help and aid--

The initial partition was FAT and was extended to fit your whole drive and then it was converted to NTFS... This allows the OEM to use any size drive with no special customization... It is not as efficient as making a native NTFS partition from the get go...

Here is a firmware upgrade for the WiFi card...

http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-40236

Earlier today I experienced some severe lag when I was setting up my wireless... Come to find out this is a known issue and the firmware upgrade is the fix...

Thanks. You're really all over this thing, eh? Are you satisfied with yours or do you wish you'd held out for that deal on the T40? I need some instruction on which one to go for (already bought the T23, but have a friend who wants to buy it from me, if I want to sell).

Won't the automatic settings for CPU and PCI bus give me fastest speed all the time I'm plugged into wall? If yes, I think i'll leave it there. What other setting are good to optimize?

Any software you suggest?

Cheers--

Looks like some of these are hitting Egay! LOL

'Fast Pentium III-M 1.2GHz, equivalent of Pentium IV 1.9GHz (speedwise)'

Is this true?

Equivalent to a P4 1.9? Who comes up with this?

Well, the P3M is a "better" processor than the P4. I remember when the P4 first went mobile and there were comparisons of the P3 notebooks to the new 1.6Ghz P4 notebooks, the P3 notebooks actually outperformed the P4s in many benchmarks.

Memory: I was able to get in on the Dell SB 15+15+5% deal; got my 512MB SODIMM today. The Kingston KTM-TP133/512 label reads: Equiv. IBM P/N: 19K4656.

Still waiting for mine to arrive. Damn, it says off the Airbone Express site that it'll take 4 days (shipped out Monday night, predicted to come in Friday) :'(

I got one and was going back for another when i discovered that the deal is bust. Talked to a guy at PCConnection and he said it was a "while supplies last" deal and there won't be more coming. But who knows?

Also, it's relatively easy to get a similar deal on eBay here.

OK, it's not identical or anything, but it's close and they are new with 3 yr warranty.

Hey guys,
After carefully examining the LCD, i found that there are 8 bad pixels. One is bad all the time, the other 7 are bad when certain colors are visible. Is 8 bad pixels "acceptable"? Or should i call IBM and get a replacement?

Thanks,
HP

You should call IBM and find out about getting it replaced or fixed. 8 dead pixels certainly qualify. I had one dead pixel on my old T20 and it really bothered me, especially at the beginning.

I ordered an extra one yesterday. Helped kill the deal I guess. Anyone that calls them trying to still get one. Ask them how MANY they sold in the last week! LOL

most definitely call IBM. IIRC, they will make you run some tests to see if the pixels are always visible. 8's definitely enough for an LCD replacement. IBM's got good support, so they shouldn't give you hassle.

Igobyte, iamme:
I know what you mean. The one that is dead is there all the time (except when the screen is black ). The other ones are there, but they don't really appear until the screen is either blue, or grey. I will give IBM a call tomorrow and see what they say. Better not charge me for shipping the thing back to them. I am just now redoing the whole thing I just didn't like how the partitions were setup (1 main partition). So i am adding 2 other partitions, 1 for programs and the other for data. Then ill just ghost it over and burn the image to CD. If i get them to replace this one i can just ghost the images back over to the new one i get (or this one that gets fixed).

Are you guys having "issues" with the processor speeds? Most of the times when i go into windows and check the speed it is at 791mHz. If i unplug the AC then plug it back in it goes up to 1.2gHz. It is like it isn't even checking to see if it is on AC. It just defaults to slow until you manually unplug/replug AC in. Maybe a new BIOS would fix it? This is even on a clean install of windows XP. It even did it when i first received it too.

Edit:
BTW, i even had the one gizmo set to disabled for CPU power management when i first got it. On a clean install of XP you don't get that option though...unless it's hiding somewhere.
