I don't think its an NEC. If Outpost's specs are right, the drive reads DVD's at only 8x. The NEC reads at 12x.

NEC ND-1300 Specs

It's very likely that its the OEM version of Sony's DRU-500AX.

MysticMan1,

Sony!! That's all I need to hear. Just placed my order.

Total w/overnight shipping $287.47. Subtract the $50 rebate, plus I have another $70 in received rebates w/nothing better to do. This drive just cost me a whoppin' $167.47 Shipped. Now that's smokin'.

Thanks MysticMan1

You are The Grand Nagus of them all!

OK, I went for it. Can someone recommend a place for cheap DVD-R / RW media?

WHO MANUFACTURES THE DRIVE???? is it a NEC? if so, i am in

Best I can tell, it's made by Ricoh who also makes the Sonys (though I could be wrong).

Well, this one burns DVD+RW also, so you won't be stuck with a burner that doesn't burn current disks.

I've seen this drive at several different Fry's in the Bay Area. The price may be different in-store than on Outpost.com, though. I've noticed the prices are sometimes different.

So nobody on the planet (or at lease those who read Anandtech) has bought this drive yet?

As soon as Cendyne was selling Pioneer drives, there was 30 people posting it. Nobody has actually bought this drive? Nobody can just tell us what the sticker on the drive itself says? What their OS, or NERO says this drive is?

This is hard to believe....

So far it's a Sony/NEC/Ricoh hybrid....that narrows it down....

If this drive does turn out to be an OEM Sony DW-U10A, take a look at this forum. There are usefull tips on flashing it to a NON OEM Sony firmware, so you can then take adantage of Sony updates.

KNow what you are doing first, or dont do it.

NO doubt. I have already bought two DVD burners because of MM
{shakes fist in air-curses MM} hehehehe

I got 2 drives, for the single retail of one.

The first Cendyne (PioneerA05) $169.99
The second was first an HP screwup 300i $169.99 (Sold it on eBay for $260). Took $260 and made a deal at OD for a Sony 500a - $349.99 - $50 off coupon - $50 Sony exclusive email rebate. So for that original $169.99 got a $349.99 Sony Dual 4x drive.

MM is a bad man

You can take advantage of future firmware updates for the 500A that might add new features and/or support for other media.

Rebate goes to Niagra Falls, NY. Is that someone who actually pays? (sounds like TCA?)

All of the sony drives are really the same hardware, the only differences are the bundles, and firmware... (and between retail/oem is the front bezel)

Although I am not going to buy this thing, I love that this item is available, Sony can kiss my ass. If I am going to get a +/- I will wait until LiteOn makes one available. Initally I was concerned about format, but I have yet to find a DVD player that will not play my DVD-r backups burned on my Pioneer.
