That because the Sony OEM DW-U10A drive is similar to the Sony DRU-500 but it's not a repackaged DRU-500 drive.

My drive just came and it IS a SONY DW-U10A! The manufacture date is November 25, 2002.

Just received mine. Low and behold, the box is labeled as having an 8 mb buffer on the box. Must look inside now!!

In this link posted by Sept1967 people said that they have flashed the Sony OEM DW-U10 to the DRU-500A drive with the DRU-500A firmware.

Their prices are great, but their resellerratings are low(6-7), I know people that have bought from them anyway (cheapest house brand dvdrs) and had no problems, and shipped very quickly...

I bit I ordered 25 pcs DVD-R Ritek from rima.com, along with some slimline cases. Pretty good prices, the best I could find on searching a few mentioned

I'll probably pick up a few +R's from Best Buy also, but I'm pretty sure I want to stick with -R's for now for moving my Home Movies to DVD.

the posts from the other board say that the older sony drives can be flashed to 4x+R, and you can flash this drive to that sony drive. so after you flash it, you should be able to upgrade the firmware to 4x+R. so, who wants to try it?
