Just dropping by to say that I received by drive today and successfully flashed it to the DRU-500A 2.0e firmware.
No problems with the flashing process but I have yet to test out the 4x DVD+R/RW capabilities.
None of the media I have are certified to burn at 4x

There's a possibility that you can get the retail sony for about $270-ish, before tax w/free shipping. It involves pm staples to buy.com and a coupon. Just be sure to use the aforementioned coupon before the pm.

Well I received my drive on Tuesday but because I haven?t had Internet access all week, I didn?t know about the flash upgrade beforehand. I had already put the drive in a USB2 enclosure and didn?t feel like ripping it apart again, so I did the unthinkable, I tried flashing it via the USB connection...eureka, success! I also noticed that Nero reports the CD-R burn speed as 28x now. So I promptly burned some of my photos on a 4x DVD-R just as a test. The burn was good, but it took 30:30 even though it was at 4x. I thought it was only supposed to take 15 minutes. Anybody?

Yeah, I'm waiting for that Lite On drive to come out. I don't really need a DVD burner right now, so I can wait a couple months.

Flashed it with no problems. Doing some VHS video capture now with my LeadTek WinFast 2000XP. I'm capturing as "DVD NTSC". Any suggestions once I've captured VHS, for the best "burn it to a DVD" software?

Beware!

I talked to a Outpost.com CSR and the drive is back ordered and they do not know when they will get more stock in. The major problem with this is they do not charge your credit card until the drive ships. The date your drive ships is the purchase date. So if your drive did not ship by the 4th you do not qualify for the rebate. The CSR verified this. She asked if I would be interested in another drive (bait and switch?). I canceled my order. Screw Outpost.

Yah I've been poring over that site So far I've just used Nero until I get more advanced. Seems like there are 300 different programs for everything, and not much that wraps it up all into one package and does it well (capture, authoring, burning, etc.)

DVD-It seemed ok for authoring, but then wouldn't find my burner so I used Nero.

This is complete crap. I'm going to call right now and see if I get a different response. I'll let you guys know.

EDIT: What complete garbage. I just got off the phone with a CSR and he gave me the same story. I like to use the word asinine in situations like this because that's exactly what this is. I cancelled my order and don't plan on shopping with Outpost or Fry's again for a very long time.

Weird --- I called to order the DVD drive too and I was told differently -- that the "order date" would reflect when I had originally purchased it. Also, my online order status says "Order date: Fri Apr 04 16:28:00 EST 2003"

Also I had to get the price adjusted cuz it went up like $75 that day (from 275 to 350) but it went through without a hitch too ....

anyone else order this and were told when it might come back in?
