Don't bother trying Fry's. I drove there today (30 min each way) only to find out that they have a ton of the drives, but they want $299, won't match Outpost's price, and had no mention of a $50 rebate. Needless to say, I just ordered one on Outpost.com... too bad it says backordered now.

ya, i called my local frys, guy barely knew what i was talking about, told him to go look on outpost.com, he said they dont carry that specific drive, only through outpost.com...

I just put one in the cart and I didn't see anything saying that it's in backorder, but I didn't go all the way through checkout, or it might depend on what area you're ordering from.

Installed, I flashed it to 2.0e DRU-500a... Seems to work fine, I'm now trying to find something to burn

One really nice thing is they give you 4 blank dvds 1 of each (DVD+r DVD-r DVD+rw DVD-rw)

A few tips on the flashing process, I would really listen to what it says and kill everything, and disable your anti-virus (this way there also is no way you'll crash during the flash)...
They require you reboot twice (once before flashing, once after)

You can easily flash the DW-U10A (firmware 1.01) without any risk to DRU-500A. Load the Updater (v.201), here:
http://isweb44.infoseek.co.jp/computer/type-ive/files/DW-U10A_to_DRU-500A.zip
which will recognize your U10A and flash it with DRU-500A firmware 1od.
After this and a system restart you can use the official new Sony Updater (v.301) to flash the last firmware 10g.
It worked with my drive!

I noticed one strange thing, in order for it to read dvds, I had to go into props from device manger and set the region again... I had a DVD rom in the machine before, and replaced it with the burner, I hope that's what the problem is here...

Recieved my drive also. It is also labeled as a Sony DW-U10A. Nov. 19th, 2002. Those box states an 8 meg buffer, with Buffer Underrun Protection.
2.4X DVD+RW/+R
DVD-R 4X, 2X, 1X
DVD-RW 2X, 1X
CD-R 24X, 16X, 12X, 4X
CDRW 10Xm 4X

Hope this helps with anyone still wondering if it is a Sony. It actually says Sony on the sticker on my drive.

Have not flashed or even installed it. Got it today from Outpost.com....only took one day ground shipping.

question for those of you who got it, whats the max speed u can burn with the included DVD-R, on mine it only said 1x. that's probably b/c of the media? havent done the flash yet, will soon.

successfully backed up a dvd, looks great. i'm a happy camper.

another question for people with the drive. when you open nero (assuming thats what you use) with no media in the drive, what is the fastest burn speed listed? mine says 3.1x .....

it can burn DVD-R's up to 4x. which is 15 minutes approx and $3-4 a disc.

i ran the flash upgrade and now the drive is detected as a SONY DVD-RW DRU-500A...

LuZeR: 4x media is about 1.70/peice. PM me if you have problems finding them that cheap.

listen up. to update this drive... do as follows:
1) download & install the OEM to Retail upgrade.
2) download & install the Sony 2.0E update from sony.

now you should get 4x DVD+R and all the other good stuff.

yes you can flash it back. its in one of the links mysticman provided on page one. i did the flash bothways, works fine.

luzer - have you burned 4x DVD+R ? i don't have any media to test it yet.

btw for anyones else curious, i found out from another forum that it shows up as 4x speed after u insert 4x media. still waiting to find out about DVD+R speed though.

You should be able to receive the $50 back, as on the rebate it says it must be purchased between 3/28/03 & 4/4/03. It must be postmarked by 4/28/03
