*DEAD* Insane BB laptop deals (Compaq x1050 Centrino 1.4 GHz for 800 AR among others!)

Hi,
There's been a lot of activity over at FW regarding some really great notebook deals, so I thought I'd share it with all of you AT'ers.

Compaq X1050US

The Compaq is no longer on BB's website but local stores seem to be getting in new shipments. Just today I was about to get another deal from BB online when I decided to call my local store and amazingly they had just gotten one in. Simply amazing for the price.

Intel integrated graphics

Also a great laptop, emachines uses Arima as their OEM. Nothing but praise from net reviews for emachine laptops. Only thing is the integrated graphics.

Although it went OOS almost instantly, it seems that many local stores still have some on hand. Also, BB has the *EDIT* (its the S1298, not S128) A15-S1298 for 499 AR which is the same except with a 14.1" screen and 30 GB HD. This is the same $499 Toshiba that BB had in their Black Friday laptop deal.

Wow that X1050US is a great deal. If only I didn't hate Compaqs. My Toshiba 1415 from last year @ BB is still doing great but going to Centrino would be a nice upgrade if I could sell my Tosh for a good amount of money. Hmmm. Going to check my local BB tomorrow and see what I think once I'm there.

The emachines is in stock online right now. Great deal, as you can use ebates 1% plus no need to battle crowds at the stores.

When you buy instore about 5 feet worth of rebates print out at the register.

Rossman, I bought the last one at the Ithaca store where it rang up for 1149 - 350 in rebates.

the centrino Compaq x1050 are YMMV. Theyve been in high demand since thanksgiving and are currently not being sold or restocked by best buy. the only ones left are random ones at stores so the chances of finding them are slim. (and in socal the chances are zero).

as for the Emachine 5105. dont be fooled by the bad rep they earned 4 years ago. these guys are different and they actually are making some quality products. i got that last week when i thought i had a good deal at $800 so after rebate and its incredible. beautiful wide screen and tons of features. So for $600 then its tough to pass it up. just keep in mind that the online pic is wrong. it doesnt have Svid, Firewire or Parallel. And also doenst have wireless built in. These arent a big deal but its just a heads up.

Anyway, i just returned my emachine today because i managed to get my local best buy to transfer in an x1050 from a store 100 miles away. it should be here in 2 days if i dont get screwed over.

Another decent BB lappie deal right now for a non-gamer is the Medion MD 40812 for $550 after a $150 & a $100 MIR. Stats:

• Mobile AMD Athlon? XP-M processor 2200+, Barton core CPU; 128KB L1 cache + 512KB L2, 166 FSB
  256MB DDR SDRAM, expandable to 768MB (1.25GB with 1.0GB SoDIMM)
  DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive; 8x max. DVD-ROM; 24x10x24 CD-RW
  14.1 XGA TFT display
  30.0GB hard drive
  S3 Savage 8 GFX graphics, with up to 32MB shared video memory
  Integrated 10/100 Fast Ethernet LAN network card
  V.90 high-speed modem
  4 high-speed USB 2.0 ports
  Weighs about 5.3 lbs./about 1" thick

The machine doesn't have any S-video, parallel, wireless, serial or firewire ports, but plenty of USB 2.0 ports and 1 PCMCIA slot. The video is nothing to write home about, but OK for playing DVDs (I hope) & the AMD Athlon XP absolutely spanks the Celeron line and even comparably clocked P-IVs according to this recent Anandtech Budget CPU Shoot-out.
Plus the rebate amount is lower and the final price is as low or lower than the Intel lappies. Also, the Medion is a pound or so lighter than the alternatives & generally smaller in other dimensions as well. Anyway, I ordered one and intend to kick up the RAM to 392 MB or so when I see a good deal and maybe eventually get a wireless NIC so I can use the net in places that provide wireless access.

PS the Emachine laptops are actually CLEVO's, they should be perfectly good systems.

I was checking them out at BB last night and I swear that it had a 802.11g and firewire port.

Against my advice, a relative purchased an e-machines. It was worth its weight in crap... The centrino deal, however, looks hot... if one gets lucky and finds one in stock.

The Emachines are based on the Arima W720
W720 picture

Arima is a quality OEM.
