I think it's one of the better games that have come out this year but am not sure I would pay full price for it. The $34 I payed for it is definitely worth out but I think it's worth $40 would be a fair price. If you haven't bought it already and are still on the fence I'd recommend waiting for the steam halloween sale. I imagine it'll be discounted then and by that time it should be patched well (although I'm having no problems with the current patch).

Agreed. It's not GOTY material, but it's certainly lots of fun mashing together several different games with a bit of campy-ness of a B rated movie (at least, that's what I got from it). Got my friend to try it, and he's pretty much falling along the same concensus.

If anyone's interested GMG has the game for $39.98 after a discount code, and Amazon sells the digital download for a flat $39.99 (retail version download, or you can just use the Steam key and download through there).

I downloaded it friday from amazon for $40. ive not had any of the crashing problems others are having. hasnt crashed once on me yet. my buddy who got it too had one crash while joining my session otherwise nothing.

its got its share of quirks, ill say that. the key double binding is annoying. no mouse5 (i can only use 1 of my 2 thumb buttons). the horrid FOV. issues picking things up sometimes. open in-game mic (let me use TS3 damnit). outside of these quirks, its been a fun game. we put in a few hours saturday. the game reminds me ALOT of borderlands. im not sure if its because neither of us are using the gun class person, but we havent found any guns in the game yet. even though its not our specialty, it would be nice to have a ranged weapon sometimes.

There's DLC coming out later this month. That takes some audacity - charging people for more content in such a broken game. But people will lap it up.

This comment is negligible to people who preordered though. Since they're getting it for free.

You'll find that guns are only useful in specific situations, like against a specific enemy or shooting something that is explosive (propane tank).

But you haven't found any guns yet probably because you're not in Act II yet. You may find a random common pistol late in Act I but you'll find that it's fairly useless since you only have a few rounds.

Melee will still be your weapon of choice a majority of the game.

this is an excellent game not for evryone
a case of the sum being greater than its private personal parts
im having alot of fun with it
its engrossing
combat is fun
lacks polish in places
better than 80% of what i played current on the market..easy
its ambitious and worthy
its stewy and brothy
fetch quests, loot
drive ya nuts, but it keeps ya goin
alot more right with this than wrong

AGREE. Like I said earlier... I WILL get my 50 bucks out of it. And a week in... DAMN close already. 3 characters. one for my MP sessions with my sons (They downloaded this WILD app we are actually playing on a "Lan" over the internet till they fix the MP issues. A toon I like... and an experimental.

I've put a few hours into it.

It's not bad...in fact it is quite good. But it really suffers from a terrible UI. Plus the checkpoint system sucks. Can we please just save when we want to. This isn't the 1980's anymore. Geez. Also there is no day/night cycle which is a bit lame for a modern game of this genre.

On the up-side combat is fun, the weapons varied, and the island is interesting and it has freaking zombies.

Anyone else having trouble finding stuff for the modifications in this game? I have ~20 mods, but lack the weapons - not the components, for 90% of them. The nail'd, impact, heavy, and ripper mods are fun, but I really want to try out some of the others.

I'm in act 3, and generally having a blast. Can't remember the last time I've had this much fun with a game. It actually made me stop playing DEHR, which was also fun but starting to get tedious.

Also, has anyone seen any rhyme or reason to the weapon classification (white, blue, orange, etc.)? At first I thought it was diablo-esque in that orange and blues were more rare than whites. But the stats for the orange and blue weapons do not seem to be significantly better than the whites (at least in my playthrough).

While the game as a whole is a ton of fun, things I am somewhat disappointed in are:

1. The autoleveling of the weapons. In my entire playthrough, I have picked up only one or two weapons that were not linked to my character level; and

2. The small number of enemy types. Thus far (14+ hours in), I have seen only six types of enemies types (walkers, infected, the "brute" (the big one that can knock you on your ass), the suicider, the floater, and humans). There are some variants of each (e.g., armed/smoking/burning), but I was hoping for a significantly larger number of enemy types, particularly as this game combines various elements of L4D (certain enemy types, high speed action), diablo (loot classification system), fallout 3 (NPC conversations, gore, crafting), and borderlands (huge world, minimal story, quest hubs, lots of loot).

I think one of the tips in the loading screen mentions that better quality weapons have better stats when fully upgraded.

I have two problems with the game.

1. Randomly, the sound will create this horrible static sound as if all sound channels were combined and turned up at 100% volume. I have probably lost some hearing in my right ear due to this. Is there a fix for this?
2. The framerate seems to be reduced when moving in any direction using the keyboard. Moving the camera using the mouse is smooth. Is there a fix for this?

Game is rockin, but the bug with usb headphones is suckin.

I'm using headphones through a Xonar Essence STX sound card and get the "static" problem.

I think there are some fixes posted up on the Steam forums. I use a USB DAC to either monitors via RCA or Shure IEMs via headphone amp and don't get any static issues. Though I did have my sound drop out entirely from Windows today, though a cycle of the USB DAC fixed it.

So I'm probably late to your reply seeing as how I just got back from a week off, but to those still curious:

Assuming an equal level weapon, Legendary (orange) > Elite (Purple) > Rare (blue) > Uncommon (green) > Common (white). Though I *think* the prefixes/suffixes change this and aren't related to quality. Meaning a green weapon with good prefixes will have better stats than a blue weapon with bad prefixes. Something like that -- but the prefix/suffix thing is only a hypothesis. Legendary items don't have any prefixes or suffixes, and seem to consistently have the highest stats. The variance between white and orange increases as you level up. As of the early 30's or so, I haven't used anything less than green since they're always better, and by late 30's have migrated mostly to blues, a purple or two, and 1-3 legendaries.

As for weapon mod ingredients, check the vendors. They rotate their stock, and I've been able to buy everything I've needed from a vendor at one point in time. You might have to travel to several different ones, but you'll find it.

Oh, AdamK, there's a tweak tool on the steam forums that'll fix the microstutter from keyboard use as well as allowing easy graphics and gameplay tweaking. Seems like the game reads repeated keypresses rather than a continual keypress, or something like that.

I'm in act 2 right now, playing through with a buddy. For sure enjoying it. Not as much as Borderlands, but it's fun in it's own right. Dead Island isn't anywhere near as hectic as Borderlands was. But that's ok, it's probably more challenging with the wear on weapons and whatnot and limited health. Currently rocking a shock powered machete that's pretty fun. Hit zombies they get electrocuted.

Been too busy to pick this one up but will have some free time the next few weeks. I read through this thread and sounds like most people at least think it's worth playing. However, I'm concerned from videos I've seen online that the UI is pathetically console-ish - I loathe PC games that have console-like controls. Is it really as bad as some of the videos on YouTube make it look like?

I play it with an Xbox controller. Definitely how it was designed. Not really a draw back, it's hardly a shooter, so the controller is fine for it.

That gives the developers are few months to get the kinks worked out.

i was thinking about that as well...

but the thing one need to worry about is the activity of its community.

I got to play the game at my cousins house.
Infact i finished it over the weekend doing most of the side missions as well.
Its not bad... but its most definitely a coop game.
Meaning the way to get the most out of it is to play it coop.

If you have no one to play it coop, even if the game went on sale, it would not be worth it from what i was playing.

From what ive seen to the end... chapter 18 is the last...
Normal + sprint runners + contaminated infected + Brutes + suicider + floaters + chargers + butcher + human

Guns are very limited in the game.
Infact the best guns are available in the last set of missions at the prison if i remember.

Short shotgun followed by the heavy pistol.

The best gun... most definitely a Striker Shotgun mod for the short shotgun, and the shocking rifle mod for the burst rifle, and the sshocking pistol mod for the heavy pistol.

The characters are broken tho..
Purena is probably the best spec'd and has the best skills.

If you look at her skill tree you'll see why.
She can boost damage and durability on 3 classes of weapons, which no others can.

Took me 17 hours to complete the game doing every single side quest and exploring a great deal.. although I didn't get the achievement for exploring the entire island.. maybe I missed a hut or something.

Overall a pretty good game. Those OP dev weapons make it pretty interesting if you can afford to make them

you guys should check this mod out: http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/09/22/dead-island-mod-makes-headshots-vital-leg-and-body-shots-less-so/

shamless plug because tnutz was the best man in my wedding

lol head shots with pistol was kinda stupid...

Even a shotgun shot... unless it was point blank typically wouldnt kill anything with 1 hit.

So this mod should be interesting.

what really bugged me was the reach of the melee weapons.
Sometimes they would hit others they wont.
The only thing u knew, was when u got the slow motion, it meant dice and slicing the body up!
