Price starts out at $499 with a $200 mail in rebate, but as you configure it, if you choose the ati xpress 200 without productivity ports, it shaves the price to $274 after rebate.

I would suggest getting the:

AMD Turion(TM) 64 ML-34 (1.8GHz/1MB L2 Cache) add $95.00

80 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive add $65.00

54g(TM) 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM/SpeedBooster(TM) add $25.00

14.0 WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x768) add $25.00

ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M w/productivity ports add $25.00

12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery add $39.00

Add at least an extra 1x512MB yourself ($45.00) to bring your total system ram to 640mb, remember 128mb goes to the ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M.

So with shipping and the above upgrades its a total of $644 to get a machine you can actually do something with.

They must want to clear out these old cases in favour of the new style Compaq laptops. I got mine 11 months ago configured as above, except it was a Turion 64 ML-32 with 512KB L2 Cache, I kept the base (slow) 40gb hard drive, added Bluetooth and no cd burner for $484 shipped. Actually $684 since I am still fighting Office Depot for the $200 OD rebate they never sent me!

Unless CompUSA is better at rebates, I'd say find an entry level Turion or Core Duo system for $599 to $699 out the door with no shipping or rebates. This one is only $699 after a $30 easy rebate.

About the v2000z, I like it but wish it had an IR media remote like the HP version.

Really upgrade to the Turion. It'll be worth it if not just for the improved battery life over the Sempron.

The video is interesting, one states ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M w/productivity ports for $25 but in the description the additional $25 also buys you shared RAM upgrade from 32 MB to 128 MB.

The only difference is the ports (firewire, xtra USB, 6-in-1 media reader).

I was going to jump on this as my b-day present. But $50 shipping, and another $50 tax kills it for me. If I could pick it up instore, I'd probably still bite. But combined with my leery-ness over the $200 rebate, I think I'll pass.

Which is unfortunate cuz this old Dell C600 I'm using is really sad!

Do we have to buy the bundle items to qualify for the second $100 rebate?

Good suggestions, which also show crapUSAs marketing strategy (a $275 laptop will be more than double that to be useful) - this is a good deal if you need a really basic notebook for dedicated tasks. Not to thread crap, though for an allround notebook, this week I would go with the $549 Dell 1300 (Pentium M735/1GB/60GB/CDRW/DVD no MIRs) from Dell SB special deals.

Why on Earth would you have to bump the price up to $644 to have "a machine you can actually do something with"? Many people use a laptop as a secondary machine. Other than the 256mb RAM included with this one, it is eminently useful. In fact, it's CPU is as powerful as desktops were just a couple of years ago, and I don't think - other than games - general-purpose software is demanding much more.

The only "must-have" upgrade for this lappy is RAM, although a faster harddrive is a close 2nd.

CompUSA had better do a better job with rebates!

Thanks OP, I ordered one....

BTW, looks like they are out of 40GB HDD so you can get 60GB HDD for the same price...

Now only if they would honor their rebates....

The V3000Z is the same price it looks like. Same screen? Weirdness... What's the difference? You can get the "imprint" (black) case on it too for more bucks.

Does anyone still have copies of the two $100 rebates? They seem to have disappeared now.

I just saw this thread and checked the CompUSA site. Can anyone answer me...

Q: So there is no $499 price anymore? And only one rebate from HP left?

So it would be better get a laptop directly from HP then? Or is there a better deal on other site?

Btw, is it cheaper to get your own RAM and HD outside than upgrading with Compaq?

Answer is: wait for the next deal. You can figure out your last question by comparing the price of the upgrades to the cost from the manufacturer. It's usually cheaper to upgrade yourself but not always.
