Which Dell laptop, Inspiron, Vostro, Latitude?

ThinkPads are comparable to Dell Latitudes as they're both business-oriented notebooks. The ThinkPad is a much better deal IMO.

As someone who owns a R60 (for work) - Core 2 Duo, 14.1, 1GB/60GB, XP - I'm not that impressed with it. I hate being a fanboi of any one brand, but I've yet to find a laptop that came close to comparing to my Dell Latitude D500 as an overall laptop...I loved that thing

I know exactly what you mean.

I ordered a loaded Lenovo ThinkPad T60 for $1,450 back in November 2006 thinking it was the holy grail of laptops. I used it about an hour and it's sat there for 7 months. Yeah I know I should sell it, hopefully soon. It's sad because it's loaded, slim and sexy as hell.

My Dell Latitude D630 on the other hand is awesome, $300 cheaper and loaded. I was beginning to think finding a worthy replacement to my trusty Dell Inspiron 700m was never going to happen.

just a little security warning about lenova software:

their automated driver and bios update software creates an automatic encrypted tunnel to servers in china (where lenova's are made now that IBM sold their laptop division to the chinese. Lenova is run by the chinese govt).
lets put it another way: Chinese govt won't use Microsoft's bitlocker built into vista because of potential backdoors for our govt, our govt doesn't want its people to use Lenova's automatic software updates for the same reason.

here is some old info, but gives the general idea:
http://www.net-security.org/news.php?id=10750

it sounds kind of hoaky, but you can see why the govt doesn't want automated encrypted data flowing to a company run by the chinese govt every night "checking for new drivers"

Of course, we all know 99% of computer parts are made in china, but this one is real and you'll never hear the whole story, but the concern is still alive and "ongoing".

As an ex-employee who worked with the preloads for ThinkPads and desktop systems (I'm not defending the crap they are doing now by the way) ....

ThinkPads have been made in China for the last few years, even before Lenovo purchased IBM PC Division. This isn't anything new. Dell's are made in China. Acer's are made in China ....... almost every laptop today is made in China. There is no point singling out Lenovo when all that exists are conspiracy theories and the FUD caused by this. What about that shiny brand new Dell, Acer or HP laptop someone just bought? What kind of spyware is loaded on those systems?

Eh, enough ranting .... conspiracy theories abound .... i own a thinkpad of my own and I run linux on it .... does that mean the chinese govt is spying on me too, just because its a lenovo machine ?

You should able to install Ubuntu and forget about the problem. Does Ubuntu have any compatibility problems?

I have latitude D620, so should I notice any improvements replacing it by Lenovo?

The new Lattitudes don't get as much credit or attention as they should imo, I'd pick a D630 over a T61 anyday. Similar specs aside, the Dell's include "smart charge" much like cellphones and shavers in which up to 80% of the charge in the battery is regained with only 1 hour of charging, and up to 2 hours to charge the whole thing, whereas it's up to 4-5 hours to charge the Thinkpad's battery.

On top of that, as much praise as Thinkpad's get for being cool and quiet, I recently saw a reviews in which they recorded noise in db and temperatures on different parts of the laptop, again the Lattitude actually had lower figures in both.

Both are well built, sturdy, and lightweight(with the Dell having a magnesium alloy exterior), but again the Dell has some extra things to top it off, but Thinkpad's still hold the "snob appeal" name brand, it'll be a while until Latitudes get the same level of respect and recognition from the general public.

Need to change the topic again Ross. 10% off is back. When you have the laptop in your cart, look at the top right of the page and you'll see the button to apply the 10% off.

Thanks and edited

This is REALLY hot compared to your typical Dell E1405/E1505 deal.

In for one...upgraded the processor to the T7300, memory to 2GB and HDD. It's a good thing that I'm not completely paying for it.
