The Triumph comes with a screen protector on top of Gorilla Glass right from the manufacturer.
The factory clear film that comes on the Optimus V also works great as a screen protector. Perfectly applied, no bubbles (on most)...don't even know it's there if you cut the tab off cleanly right at the glass edge with an xacto knife.

Not sure why anyone would peel that off just to stick on an "official" screen protector.

I even left the plastic instructional film on the battery cover for some time, and it took a good deal of punishment away from the battery cover itself...since the film is right where the phone contacts the surface when you set it down.

1. are any of vm's phones rootable?

2. I know if varies by tax and everything but what are some of ur bills looking like for the $35 plan? somewhere near $42 or under I hope.

this would be a downgrade to my nexus one but a lot cheaper.

I'm close to getting this. It's too bad it's not as good as other phones, but the price is a couple hundred less, and VM $35/month seems good (why pay double).

I don't like the idea of 'mobile' web browing rather than normal web browsing on a mobile device, not to mention I suspect typing would be a headache, but oh well.

Yup, this one's rootable, good custom ROMs you can use, and overclockable (stock 600Mhz, I run mine at 806Mhz)

It used to be $25/mth...they increased the price a few months ago to $35/mth. Anyways, I use topup cards (no tax in CA) and pay a flat $25. I tried doing CC autopay, but then they wanted to tack on tax.

I have mine rooted & running Bumblebee rom. Make sure you check out http://forums.androidcentral.com/optimus-v-rooting-roms-hacks/. Also, the lcd's have been upgraded recently & some people, myself included, get blacked out recovery screens. It is easily fixed with info on the same forum(I am a rooting noob & I fixed it in 10 minutes)
The custom roms allow for mobile tethering, so that is a bonus. Stock rom has it blocked.
With tax in TN, my cost is $38 per month.

Awesome thread, I just bought 2 of these. To hell with that T-Mobile plan I've been scheming on.

Anyone know if it's normal for the new battery to have something like 20% charge on it? It was either 20% or 50% when I put it in, I forgot. I'm assuming these batteries aren't like the dark ages ones, when you had to charge to 100% before use or they never worked to their full potential, right? Right?

I'm close to getting this. It's too bad it's not as good as other phones,

800mhz is sufficient for us proles

that sig is straight baller son, rezzpek'

I'd much rather see Hedges and Zinn in peoples sigs than OC'd i7-920s.

you're supposed to store lithium batteries at 40% charge, they don't ship with 100% because that degrades the life of the battery.

after 1 year stored at room temp with 100% charge the battery will have ~80% the capacity it had while new.

Ok, I don't want to argue. I trust that LG is telling the truth. I believe you.
All said, I love my Optimus V & for 99 bucks, I just might pick up a second one for a replacement.

Heh, don't worry. I'm about to buy one myself. $100 for this and the $45 plan seem VERY solid, especially since you get 1200 minutes and unlimited texting and data.

Not saying this isn't glass, but I've encountered many a times where the specs on a product were incorrectly listed on a company website or a company rep gave out bad info.

Well, this is what LG says on the official page for the LG Optimus V (and the Optimus One, which is the base design for T-Mobile, Sprint/VM, and the others).

Of course, since it's not very hard glass it does look a bit like plastic, but nonetheless resists scratches better than plastic while not shattering as easy as harder glass (except Gorilla Glass, which doesn't shatter easily due to chemical strengthening).

I didn't know that. Gorilla Glass is different from normal glass, though. It's very hard, but since it's been chemically strenghtened it doesn't shatter as easily. Still not much point in the screen protector given the fact that it's not gonna protect it from a high drop on its screen. For low drops the Gorilla Glass should be sufficient.

I just don't see the point of a screen protector on modern glass screens, especially gorilla glass. Seems like it would just make it harder to swipe, since most screen protectors aren't as smooth a surface as a glass screen. I never use screen protectors with my phones, and have never had noticeable scratches on my HD7 or Atrix.

Jumped and bought another one for a spare. Figure better than $ 5 / month and deductible for another. Got lucky and lady reminded me of 30 day price match so $ 30 bucks back on first phone

They must've blocked tethering with the newer version, as the original version did not have it blocked in the stock ROM...you just needed a free app like Quick Settings to get to the Hotspot setting.

Apparently, the differences are that they changed LCD manufacturers and updated Android to a newer Froyo version. For those on the original version, LeslieAnn over at androidCentral has put out a patch that will add the new version of e-mail, messaging, and market onto the original OptimusV.

Once VM updated to 2.2.2, it blocked mobile hotspot. The custom roms added it back. They also changed to the same lcd as the Optimus S(sprint version), so you need an older Xionia kernel built off of the Sprint version to avoid the black recovery screen.
