Got this drive, can anyone tell me if their drive is SUPER loud?
I have a 80GB and 120GB WD 7200 in the same system and I can hardly hear them. When I access this 120GB Maxtor, it's really loud. What gives?
Your CompUSA must suck, mine no questions asked. Sweet 8MB goodness!!!Originally posted by: PeterPan2002
My local CompUSA has a ton of these 120GB "100+20GB" Maxtor drives on display and most of them have the vertical "P" code on the label (the 8MB version). So I went ahead and bought one there for $150 knowing I will return it next week, but that way I am covered 100%. If the Staples drive arrives and it is the 8MB version, I'll just return the CompUSA drive. If the Staples drive is the 2MB version, then I'll swap drives and return the 2MB drive to CompUSA. It's the same part number, so no problem & no questions.
Yes let you guys know that my CrapUSA put the serial number on the receip. So I don't think you can return a different drive.
Mine is super silent. Noise is much more important to me than performance, since this is going into a system for live audio recording. I turned off the PS and CPU fans for a minute and I could barely hear it, even with the case open. Many sites have tested it and rated it as one of the quietest drives available. Apparently the new fluid-bearing drive motors really help keep the noise down. I understand the new IBM drives are about as quiet as this Maxtor and the WD Caviar drives are much louder than this drive.Originally posted by: sygyzyGot this drive, can anyone tell me if their drive is SUPER loud?

That's exactly what I did...see my posts for details.Originally posted by: sambao21So has anyone besides csaddict not get an 8mb cache drive? Also, if i didn't get lucky and got a 2mb cache drive, is there a way I can return it to the store and get my money back? Also, I went to the store today and they won't let me look at the boxes, they're behind the counter and I can't go in there. I just looked at 2 boxes and both were 2mb versions. I was thinking of going and looking at all the boxes and if there was an 8mb get that as insuarance, and then order online and if i get 8mb then i'll just return what i bought at the store, otherwise if i got a 2mb then i'll just return the 2mb to the store. Almost seem like to much hassle and a little risky.
The drives ship with "write verify" enabled to guard against any damage in shipping. After the drive's power has been cycled ten times, it's supposed to disable itself. Go to the Maxtor web site and download the drive utilities if you want to force disable the "write verify" feature. That's what I did because I wanted to do some I/O testing with the drive right after I installed it. Sounds like maybe that is your issue.Originally posted by: sygyzyPut a whole bunch of files. Say mp3s on there. Then somehow do something to seek. In my case, 21 GB of mp3's on the drive, open up Winamp and add the folder (with subfolders too). Result: nice and loud.
