>> Brought one from Staples B&M with $30 coupon. Went thru a couple til I found the "P3Y6". Going back next week for a PM.

Hey, I just called Staples and got them to pricematch against Best Buy's $149.99 - 40 - 20 mail in rebate. At first the CSR said she could only give me $12 back because of Best Buy's 2-day shipping charge (my drive was on order I guess, it's still not here). I told her that there is a Best Buy within walking distance of here and I could pick it up for free. After another minute on hold, I had a $21.64 refund.

Dang this is a sweet deal -- provided I get an 8MB version. If not, I'm going to try to take it to staples and exchange it for one. (Anyone know any good excuses for doing this ?

$149.98 - $30 coupon - $40 MIR - $21.64 PM + 10.29 TAX (yecch) = $68.63 shipped!

Hey V00DOO, what do you mean you "went through a couple"....did you just keep returning them until you got what you wanted? How did you get them to do that? Just curious..i got mine yesterday, and it's the 2MB 1yr warranty version... 8-(...I was really hoping for the 8mb 3 yr.......

No, I didn't buy it and return it. Look at the side of the box and if you see L6Y3 tell the CSR for another drive til you see P6Y3.

I'm a little confused, PeterPan. Did you have STAPLES.COM pricematch a Fry's B&M, or did you do this at Staples B&M?

The price match policy says "coupons are included in the price" - given that, how did you get them to lower the price by 20, given you already had a 30 coupon?

I dont understand how you got them to pricematch it after you've bought it? Can I just call up staples, and tell them I bought a drive online and now I want a pricematch?

within 14 days of purchase, they'll pricematch. my question is still about the coupon, but given the success of others, I guess they are ignoring it.

SCORE!

I just pricematched to the bestbuy drive located here for an extra $23 off. $65 total AR

edit: She didn't even mention the coupon that was used.

edit 2: Don't forget to mention that best buy has free shipping or that you can o to the store and pick it up. You can avoid the added shipping charge on the pricematch this way.

I think I got the 8MB version but the box and drive conflict. The drive has 6Y120P but the box says L01J100.

Anyone know what the J is?

*edit*

Just looked up the warranty and apparently it's good for 3 years. I guess it is the 8MB version. Good.

Just a note on the acoustic management utility: I know that Maxtor at least at one point produced one for their drives. I have a 60GB Maxtor that I bought in mid-2000, right when they started adding those features to the drives. I recall finding a link to their utility on their Web site somewhere, but I never used it. I don't know if it shipped in the quiet mode or what, but that drive has never made a peep since the day I installed it. Hard drives are so quiet nowadays.

I tried it - they didn't mention the coupon at all.

Gave me verbal assurance of a coming refund. ($22+tax)

Nothing in writing, but they said I'd get a refund, so I'll just let the cogs work and see if it happens.

If Staples.com tries to add shipping when youy PM to Betsbuy.com, just point out that bestbuy.com currently has free shipping on everything (or in-store pickup if there is a store near you.)

I am the same way. But I figured what the heck I'll just try it. I'm sure glad I did.

L01J100 is the Maxtor retail kit number for the "100+20GB"/2MB cache drives.

On the outside of the "100+20GB" boxes there is a white label. Ignore everything written on that label except for a 4-character code printed vertically on the right side of the label. That's the key to knowing what's inside the box. If that code reads "L6Y3" then it's the 2MB cache model. If it reads "P6Y3" then it's the 8MB cache model.

So if you find the 8MB cache model inside these boxes, chances are they were manufactured before Maxtor switched over to a one-year warranty

This should explain it all.
