Almost seem like to much hassle and a little risky.
That's exactly what I did...see my posts for details.

Did your staples store let you actually look at the drives? mine are behind a counter, and they won't let me back there. What if I just order it online and if i got a 2mb, can i just take that and return into the store in town?

Once again, read my previous posts. I bought an 8MB drive at BestBuy and returned the 2MB one I got from Staples. Same with CompUSA. All the details are in this thread, just read my previous posts.

I didn't get an 8mb cache drive because I didn't even get the right drive. They sent me a 60GB drive mistakenly. I would say if it is imperitive you get an 8mb cache drive buy one. These are supposed to be 2mb drives and you should feel lucky if you get an 8mb. This is just my humble opinion though. It doesn't really matter to me what cache it has as mine is going into an XBOX.

Hey, do what you want. I traded my drive at Best Buy to get an 8MB, three-year warranty version, and I don't feel bad at all. I bought an unopened drive marked as 100+20GB/2MB cache and returned an unopened drive marked as 100+20GB/2MB cache. They'll just put it back on the shelf and whoever buys that drive will get exactly what they paid for. You think that's wrong? Then what are you doing mod'ing your XBOX?

Hey guys, is this the 8-series or 9-series drive. I've heard there are issues with the fluid dynamic bearing motor..and was wondering if that was why only the 1year warranty was offered...

From my very limited understanding, the 8-series was much more problematic than the 9-series...is this true?

can you tell if a box has an 8 mb drive without opening it. I went to my local staples and they had about 10 drives there all of which said 2mb and started with L0. In other words do the boxes with the 8 mb drives actually say 8mb or is it like an easter egg thing.

Toddler... I tried the amset util and it doesn't detect my drive when i use /check...
i browsed thru the doc that came with the package and it didn't indicate series 9 drives as being supported by this util... haven't tried just running the util anyways but would like to know if it worked before attempting it.

Ignore the model number. There's a cryptic 4-character code written vertically on the white label on the side of the box. If that code begins with a "P" then the drive is the 8MB version. If it begins with an "L" then it is the 2MB version. This goes for all current Maxtor drives, all models and sizes. My local CompUSA has a ton of these "100+20GB" drives on the shelf and at least 80% of them had the "P" code.

Read my previous posts for more details if needed. It's been covered several times already.

I did not try that util on my drive...so I can't say for sure. I know on the Maxtor download page for that util that it says it supports DiamondMax 40, 60, etc. and "all future models" whatever that means. It would be worth calling tech support to find out if it works on the 9 series or if there is another version of the util for these drives.

Congrats! I can't believe both our orders worked out perfectly after getting f&%ked by the Staples ordering system "upgrade." Now just hope your BIOS supports it!

Were you more excited about the hard drive or that sweet a$$ box of rounded staples?

is the 2mb cache drive model number 6Y120L0? and the 8mb 6Y120P0 or L01P120?, or are those the same drives? I got these model numbers off of pricewatch.com

Ok, I have a some questions about PMing.

Example:
If you PM to Staples from BB they take the price after rebates, coupons etc. Usually saying that their price is still lower after rebates and wont do the PM, (ex. MX700 deal last week).

In this case I bought the drive from BB. Should, and if so, how can I get the PM from BB. Shouldnt I get the drive PM to $80 saving me $70? Im just curious how I can get the same price.

(Staples:$150-$30-$40 = $80)
(BestBuy: $150-$60 = $90)

Confused yet?

BM = Brick & Motar. Which means the actual store you can walk into not the online store.

I called staples rebates, according to the staples rebate rep the rebate will be homored for a B & M Purchase. I just opened the box, Mine has a Three year warranty, but appears to be only a 2MB Drive, model# 6Y120L0 Series 9, L6Y3 on th label.

I guess you didn't even bother to read the first post before buying.

Link to $40 Maxtor rebate (Good from 3-2 to 3-29 at Staples.com only.)

"<whoops, sorry for previous blank post>

anyway, i was wondering how to use the $30 off $150 in a store.... I know you can do it online, but....

Do you just give them the coupon code at checkout? The only one i could find was: 70222...Is this the one y'all are using?"

KWO... Print it out and take it to the store. The manager may accept it. YMMV
Why don't you order online or over the phone, they will take it that way.

I just wanted to provide an update... I just ran IBMFTOOL-INSTALL and changed the acoustic management setting for the drive... now it's dead silent! I can't even hear it reading/writing! Awesome... I guess Maxtor sets it at highest performance by default and leaves it there.

You should edit out that coupon code. It's against the rules to put codes in your posts.
