** Update of my deal **
After my bitching and a detailed description of my deal I finally got my drive in today: L6Y3 = 2 MB . I got home and I was upset, but I checked on the web to see if my local CompUSA had it in stock and they did. I drove down there as fast as I could and there were drives, but all of there were the L series, except for 1 that had some of the shrink wrap cut and a gouge on the side like someone was trying to cut it open and steal it. I still bought it because it was the P series. I got home and mimicked the same torn shrink wrap on my Staples box and returned it the same night, tonight. It was no problem, got a full refund at CompUSA. I came home and opened my CompUSA switched box and everything was PERFECT! I have an 8 MB cache drive and went to the Maxtor site to make sure of the warranty: In Warranty - expiration date: 3/28/06, WOO HOO! Hey, I gave CompUSA the exact drive model UNOPENED to them, no foul, sike!

I considered doing this with my L drive (my compusa had P's), but they scan the serial number at checkout at my place, so they'd see the difference even if I brought back the idential model - since it would have a different serial number.
I thought so too. I looked at my receipt and it printed "SERIAL NUMBER" and then some sort of long number. I thought I was stuck, but then I looked and compared and it was actually just the box bar code scan number. These numbers are the same for all of the boxes, so it was no problem. You better make sure and compare the serial number on your receipt to see if its actually just the SKU number, you still may be able to get yourself a P model.
One reason might be the write-verify feature of these Maxtor drives. It is enabled by default from the factory to ensure the drive is reliable and wasn't damaged in transit. Obviously if the drive is doing write-verification, you're doubling your I/O activity, hence more seek noise. It turns itself off after ten power cycles.Originally posted by: Amputater
I brought 2 of these drives from staples. The reviews on these drives said that they are SUPPOSED to be super quiet, but both of my drives are really loud. I also have a 80gb Maxtor inside my system now, and the 120gb drives are more than twice as loud as the 80gb one, especially when the drive is seeking (like when I'm extracting a bunch of rar files, or when I'm playing a bunch of MP3's), I can hear the drives making that "click click click" sound. I know that the click sounds are normal, but it shouldn't be this loud. Remember, both of my 120gb drives are this loud, so I don't think I got a defected drive. Anyone have any thoughts/solution to this?

I bougt one packet online and they dont came in with the rebate receipt. My buddy who lives about 50 miles from my house got the package with a printed rebate receipt. Now I only have a yellow "not an invoce" sheet and rebate pages printed from the web. Should that be good for the rebates ??
Thanx
The "not an invoice" is fine, i called staples and ask, and the lady said they take that.
