The bottom seems to be dropping out of these 500GB drives like the RAM has been doing. (Obviously, this is a figurative statement as you seriously do not want the "bottom dropping out" of your new hard drive...

Danged it!
I just bought a 500gb WD from the Egg for $119.
Can you do RAID of two different brands?

It is not recommended, but it may be possible. However, I would not take the chance of buying a different brand with that hope. Stick to the same exact drives to be safe.

Is this a MaxLine? I just put a 500gb MaxLine in my Shuttle and it's definitely not quiet. My 500gb Seagates are WAY quieter than my MaxLine.

- What does the same brand have anything to do with raid? The same sizes are required, but brand shouldn't make a difference.

Not only have I ran a RAID mirror with two different brands, they were two different rotational speeds. An 80GB 54000 RPM Maxtor and an 80GB 7200 RPM Hitachi. Ran perfect for 2 or 3 years until I upgraded the computer.

Regarding the raid thing, it is not recommended because of differences in drive specifications like: access time, sustained read/write rates, burst/cached reads, etc. Because of the differences, there COULD be complications like delayed writes/read errors. Saying that, I have raided drives of different brands of difference capacities in Mirror (320 with 400) However, many articles I have read have suggested against it.

And this drive looks like it is a rebadged seagate since the Model number has seagate-like branding.

Good deal.
I've had a Seagate 160gb for a couple of years now w/no problems but I've heard mixed comments about Seagates customer service. Of course one's going to hear that about all manufacturers.
