5/20: Many people are expericing OOS online. This may be temporary so don't lose hope you have until 5/25 to get on this deal. But for a sure thing B&M looks like your best bet. Unconfirmed that Staples will get a new shipment of HDs on Wednesday (for online purchases), so check the site. Also don't forget to clear you cookies apparently some people are seeing it in stock if they clear the cookies.

EDIT: Staples Thread

Ok this week in the Staples ad it has the retail boxed Maxtor 80GB 5400RPM drive, for 119.99-40MIR

Search for staples coupons online
Use $20 off 100
EDIT: (DO NOT EMAIL ME jeez you guys, try 'staples coupons' on google)

Pay $100 -40MIR and it is $60+tax (free shipping) (or in store if you got that coupon handy)

EDIT: It is a 5400RPM hard drive BUT it is going to be faster than a lot of 7200RPM hard drives. Why do you ask? Well since it is a 80GB then is has more platters and the heads to move across 8 data surfaces (4 platters) than a 7200RPM drive with just 2 data surfaces (1 platter). So the data is being sent much faster than a 7200 hard drive as I described. I got mine in store and it is a DiamopndMax 80. Which is fairly old school (were talking a year or so old). At its time it was top class as far as storage capacity in her day. It is ATA100 not the newer ATA133 drives. Storage Review of DiamondMax 80

EDIT2:
BTW it was a D540X series, and not a diamond max 80 as suggested by the link on the first post! It has 2 platters and 4 heads
Apparently your model may vary.

EDIT3: Could someone asnwer this question on the drive I have (DiamondMax 80) is says "IBM Warranty void if removed IBM P/N 24P3660" I didn't realize that Maxtor/IBM ever had realtions. I know newer Maxtor drives don't say that. So why were IBM/Maxtor competing so much against each other when this drive came out if they were one in the same.

Couldn't find the printable, but I found an online coupon and used it to place my order. I should have my drive on Thursday, according to Staples. I'm putting together my custom digital video recorder, and this will fit nicely in there.

Thanks for pointing this deal out.

I think a bunch of us have been waiting for this deal. I held off on the 80GB drive at Fry's because I knew this deal was coming. I want the drive for my Tivo and I specifically want 5400 rpm. These are better for PVR's because of heat and noise. These drives are getting hard to find. Everything is 7200 RPM now.

You might want to check some of the other Staples 5/19 sale threads. They contain a variety of combination deals on this HD and other items.

how are staples rebates? I've never used one before. I usually stay away from rebate deals but this seems too good to pass up.

If you go to Staples be sure to pick up one of their small 500VA UPS on sale this week. They have a rebate which brings the price down to $10 plus tax. I got mine.

ok, I know the 5400 rpm drive by itself sucks but how well will these drives work in a RAID setup? speedwise and compatibility-wise that is?

Thanx

Why would it suck by itself?

Don't be too quick to jump to conclusions. Though 5400 rpm drives are slower than 7400 rpm drives, they don't heat up as much. Also the bigger 5400 rpm drives use bigger platters instead of more platters therefore saving on seeking time. The bigger drives are faster than the smaller 5400 rpm drives, usually.

How much slower would this 5400 rpm drive be compared to it's 7200 rpmg counter-part? In other words, where will I see a different of performance if I was to use this drive over a 7200 rpm one?

Thanx

I'd rather buy IBM 40GB 7200RPM (Model # IC35L040AVVN07) for $73 shipped from newegg.
Cnet user's reviews are HERE.

I don't have numbers to back this up, but it wouldn't suprise me at all if this drive was about the same speed as say a 60 gig 7200 rpm drive. I'd say it's definately faster than a 40 gig 7200. I'm going to jump on this deal, even tho I aready have 40, 60, and 80 gig (all 7200 rpm) drives now. I'll run some benchies and post back if this thread is still active.

Do NOT buy IBM hard drives.. they are horrible.. you have a 50/50 chance of them crashing on you in the first year.
I've had THREE 40 GB 7200 IBM Deskstars crash on me in a row.. theres a reason IBM is dropping outta the HD business.

Should be no problem using the online coupon and then sending away for the MIR. I've done it plenty of times. It's not an issue.
