Sorry if I am a little off topic. The above reference to slickdeals, I have been trying to remember the name to a coupon site that I used to visit. If you could email me with the real name of the site. My brain is frozen and the reset button wont work. klee4@sc.rr.com

Kind of wondering

anybody know what do they mean with UPC barcode? is that only the top part before the description of the hard drive or it's including all of them including KIT# and S/N?

thx

I just ran sandra disk benchmark on this 80gig maxtor vs the maxtor 80gig 7200rpm drive (liquid bearing drive) that i picked up at staples a couple weeks ago, amazingly they are very close.

the 80gig 7200rpm drive had a score of just over 26k, while the 80gig 5400rpm drive came in at just over 24k
around 10% or less difference.

the 5400rpm drive is so quiet you don't even know it's spinning. Seeks are completely silent.

the access time for the 7200rpm is estimated to be around 7ms according to sandra, the 5400 is estimated to be around 9ms.

Nice drive for a great price. I'm going to go pickup a second one for a raid setup!

BTW it was a D540X series, and not a diamond max 80 as suggested by the link on the first post! It has 2 platters and 4 heads

All very very true. There's a mindset that 7200=good and 5400=bad, but the difference for most people is like the difference between a 1.6g CPU and a 1.7g CPU. It'll show up in benchmarks, but it's really hard to distinguish in the real world. This is a smoking hot deal for anyone that needs a lot of dirt cheap storage and those that skip it because it's "only" a 5400 are missing the boat.

I just place an order for this drive and they are telling me it is going to be 9 days for delivery? I wonder if I can change my order to in store pickup? Also the rebate will not be good if my reciept is dated on the 28th.

Does anyone think they will get more stock in... or actually have some @ the B&M?

Picked one up today at local B&M with a printable $20 off $100, they still had one on the shelf. I did have to visit a couple local Staples stores before I found one that had the drive in stock.
$107 (w/tax) -$40 MIR = $67
Not bad for 80gb of storage space!

No need to visit several stores. Its required by corporate that if one store doesn't have it in stock, they must either offer the .com, or find that item in stock in another store. If it is in another store, they can do a "save a sale". Which means you would pay for it in your local store, but the item would be transfered internally, and shipped to your house at no cost to you.

While this is true for most Stapes items, it is not true for this hard drive or most of the Staples anniversary speicals as they are classified and advertised as "special buys" and are supposed to be B&M deals limited to sock on hand. Local Staples managers are under no obligation to contact orther stores and transfer stock or attempt a .com internal purchase. However, most managers will lookup current stock in other stores in your area if you ask.

I received an e-mail confirmation immediately, although my order doesn't show up under the "Order Status" link .. it shows up under my Order History, but not under the status. Maybe it takes a day to update?

I'll assume email is working slow here. We'll see if I get anything tommorow.. If not, time for a phone call.

OOS for me for 94010 . Sucks to be Canadian, and on top of that, have your shipping partner live in California...
